If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
'Smokin Joe' Frazier
'Lil' Joe,
After dismantling and crashing Muhammad Ali in March 1971, Joe was really not interested in
continuing with Boxing anymore.
Bouts with;
Floyd Patterson, Jimmy Ellis, Jose L. Urtain and Jerry Quarry were discussed for late-1971 and 1972.
Experts agree, had 'Smokin Joe' retired in mid-1972, he would have been considered as one of the
Top 5 Heavyweights of All Time.

Smoking Joe was blind in one eye. He beat Ali based on the sheer inactivity of Ali at even a medium level.
When Frazier got in there with a real live guy like Ali the second time or with Foreman, he got smashed.

Nice to see you back Bill.

Ali smashed Frazier? When?
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
Joe was the undisputed champion when he beat Ali and made about 4th highest number of defences of the title. He was effectively finished after the Ali fight which was his ultimate performance.

ali and frazier finished each other off on march 8, 1971 at MSG......they both left their souls in the ring that night. they were both merely shadows of their former selves after that.

What is remarkable is that Ali still had the rumble in the jungle and the thriller in manilla in him.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
What an odd post/thread to start.
If James J Jeffries had not tried to come back against Jack Johnson .....
If Jack Dempsey had retired after fighting Carpentier ......
If Mike. Tyson had retired after beating Spinks ......
Or even If Riddick Bowe had retired after beating Holyfied ......
If Micheal Moorer had retired before fighting Foreman .......
If Herbie Hide had retired before fighting Vitali ......
Or
If Marciano had retired after fighting Archie Moore. Oh, wait a minute ....:p
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
Or Roy Jones retired after he beat Ruiz.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
Ahh... the Ali hater is back.
Let's carry the idea a bit further.
If Ali answers his call to the draft and goes to 'Nam...
If the Ali-Foreman fight had been called by natural disaster after the first round...
- (Ali devoted the early rounds to "rope-a-dope".... so he would've lost on account of inactivity).
If Frazier's allowed to come out for Round 15 of the Thrilla, and Ali doesn't answer the bell on account of being totally worn out and beat up inside by thunderous body shots.
If Ali gets robbed of the gold medal in the Olympics... becomes disenchanted with boxing and quits.
If the Mafia had told Ali to take a dive in the 2nd Liston fight, instead of Liston.....
Yeah..... that Ali character would've turned out to be a real bum.

'Lil' Bill,
After dismissing and seeking to diminish Muhammad Ali in 2014, 'Little Man syndrome' Bill was really not interested in
continuing with discussing Boxing anymore.
Bouts with;
Master, Brockton, Dia and Greynotsoold were discussed for late-2014 and early 2015.
Experts agree, had 'Lill Diamond Lill Bill' retired in mid-2014, he would have been considered as one of the
Top 5 worst posters of All Time.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
1971
After 'whooping' Muhammad Ali in March 1971.
Yancey 'Yank' Durham was looking to line up Jimmy Ellis for an August/September 1971 date.
A rematch between the '2' would have interesting for an 'After Summer 1971 Go'.
Jimmy had 'temporarily' retired after getting demolished by 'Smokin Joe' on February 10, 1970.
But, Jimmy came back 9-Months later {November 10, 1970} and looked good in stopping {TKO 7} Peruvian Heavyweight
Champion - Roberto Davila.
Also, Jimmy had spent time working out with Muhammad Ali in late-1970 and early-1971, as well as tutoring 'Hot Prospect' - Jeff 'Candy Slim' Merrit
in Florida at the Fifth Street Gym.
Jimmy regained 'attention' when he stopped {TKO 10} 'Irish' Tony Doyle on March 2, 1971 in Miami Beach. At the time, Tony Doyle was the #10 WBA
Heavyweight, and was a one-time conqueror of Joe Frazier in the Amateurs.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
You should give us another round by round of the fight.

Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
Yancey 'Yank' Durham
February 25, 1971 ~
After Joe 'smashes' Ali in 2-Weeks, we'll take on the winner of the Jimmy Ellis - Tony Doyle bout.
To be held on Tuesday Night ~ March 2, 1971 down in Miami Beach, Florida.
Joe really wants to finish off Jimmy. Even worse than he did last February 16, 1970 in Madison Square Garden
when he stopped Jimmy who could not come out for Round 5.
Jimmy has come back, and he looked pretty good on November 10, 1970 when he stopped {TKO 7} that big Peruvian
Roberto Davila
As for Tony Doyle, he was the last fighter to whip Joe {before losing to Buster Mathis in 1964}. Tony spanked Joe pretty
good back in 1964.
Joe took out Tony {TKO 2} back on October 17, 1967 ~ to 'Even' the score at 1-1. But Joe wants Tony one more time, to
end any questions.
We can fight the winner of that bout in the late-Summer {1971}, probably in August.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
The Ali fight did not allow him to fight that quickly. He lost the title and never reclaimed it again.
Re: If 'Smokin Joe' Frazier Retired In 1972
Actually,
March 8, 1971 ................ Fight of the Century
Late-April 1971 .............. Joe Frazier was preparing with his Musical Revue
May 2, 1971 .................. Joe Frazier and the Knockouts perform at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco
May 16, 1971 ................ Joe Frazier and his Musical Revue hit the road........ and arrive in Europe.

Joe Frazier was more than capable of fighting {and defeating} Jimmy Ellis in August 1971.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
May 1971
Joe Frazier
"Everybody asks me if I'm too worn out to fight again. Look, I go 45-Minutes non-stop when I'm up on stage. And with no breaks or
rests. Sometimes 2-Shows per Night. My weight is at 208 lbs., and my legs are as strong as ever with all the moves I make up on stage.
Give me 3-Weeks in the Gym, and I'll be able to take on King Kong."
"I will be ready to fight anyone in 3-Months. I'll fight Clay {Muhammad Ali] again if he wants another fight. I beat him once, and I'll beat him again.
On George Foreman, it's too early for him. I'll take him on if wants to challenge me, but he would be wise to have another 6-Fights to get more
experience. Oscar Bonavena wants another fight, but I have fought him twice. I'm not sure the public wants a third fight."
"I want take on Jimmy Ellis again, maybe at the end of August 1971. He's ranked as the #2 WBA Heavyweight, and he looked good in beating {KO 10}
#10 WBA-ranked Tony Doyle down in Miami. He's fighting George Chuvalo on May 10th, and if he looks good then I'll definitely offer him
another opportunity with me."
