how do they train in your gym?
i train in hove. im trained by ex british and european champ scott welch, a fitness instructor (ant brown) and sometimes chris eubank. scott does do fintess training, but ant brown is a nutcase.
some of the shit he gets us to do isnt even funny. his idea of a fun summer holiday was running the sahara. no joke.
yesterday we ran 6 miles of brighton beach, on those thin pebbles, came back into circuits.
our circuits consist of 2 mintue of intense repetitions of one excersize. we do 3 excersizes in a row then have a 20 second break, then do another 3 excersizes. then after a whole set of one excersize we do 1 minutes of each excersize with a 20 second break, then finally only 30 seconds of each excersize.
a typical circuit will be burpees, squat to tuck jump, snake pressups, squatthrusts, clap pressups, crunches, wide grip pressups, russian twists, high knee sprints, then a version of burpees (a tuckjump into pressup)
after that its a bag session, one round of power hitting, one round of technical boxing and straights then move to a different bag.
we have 6 bags!
then we all have to warm down with skipping, but as ant calls numbers we have to change our styles. like the numbers co-ordinate with different speeds or methods of skipping, and if one of us messes up we have to start again (the idea is to teach you how to think clearly when exhausted and under extreme pressure)
days when we do sparring we dont run at the beggining, and spar insead. sparring in our gym is an all out war, we hit at a minimum of 80% power, and train with 12oz gloves. full headgear and mouthguards/wraps, to put you in the fight situation.
sometimes we have specific ab workouts instead of the runs at the beggining, where we go through a circuit of ab excersizes with no stop
our gym tends to produce balanced fighters (speed and power wise) with a slight edge on the power rather than the speed of the shot. we dont have many back off "boxers" the style we preach is to come forward, or at least be neutral, rather than to fight off the back foot. clearly there are some fighters in the club to whom this doesnt apply to, because theyr style doesnt allow for it.
i would also add that we are told to improvise, we arent forced to stick to one style
our actual gym is a converted boiler room under a swimming complex, so its a hot climate. we have a full size amatuer ring in the corner, a "mirrored wall section) basically weve propped a load of mirrors against the wall for shadown boxing ;D)
we have a ring, but its too big to be amatuer size, and too small to be pro, which is kinda crappy. everywhere is always dusty, so you get coated when you do floor work. we have like 6 bags, but only 4 of them are worth using, the other 2 are way too light.
we dont have a speed bag, which is a real shame, although im fairly sure that nobody in the gym would know how to use it even if we did have one!
whats your gym like?
Re: how do they train in your gym?
Our gym is...basically non-existant. We used to be based in an army barracks (bassingbourn if you know it) but the gym was knocked down, we're now based in my town (Royston in Hertfordshire). So we are now in a community hall (going to be our home forever now), we have nothing except floor space, skipping ropes and gloves, pads and headgear. Supposed to be getting some bags up (about 14 apparently) within a few weeks, and then we're getting a collapsable ring in April.
We're trained by between 4 and 7 trainers (some dont turn up always), 3 ex-amateurs (one might have been pro not sure though) 1 Army Physical Training Instructor who boxes for the army aswell, and 3 guys who were boxers but only like lesuirly, and they come sometimes.
We start with a 15mins warm up, running around the hall, then we do a load of stretches, then some bodyweight exercises, pressups, situps, burpees, tuck jumps, squat thrusts. We then do a few rounds shadowboxing. Then, if its a tuesday we focus on circuit training for an hour or so, doing various exercises, mainly abdominals. Or if its a wednesday, we do boxing skill related stuff, like skipping, pads, technique, footwork, sparring. Then we have a 10min warm down with running around again and some more streches.
Its annoying that we dont have a better gym, and that we dont have more sessions a week, and that they arent harder (the gym has a lot of young kids about 7+) so they cant make it to hard for the few older people (theres about 15 people over 14, the oldest being about 30). Your gym sounds pretty good alex, would be great if we had a beach we could run on nearby, but we're nowhere near the sea, or any water saying that.
Re: how do they train in your gym?
my gym in youngstown ohio is a nice gym i like it cause its on a 1st floor and the sunlight comes in ...the ring is in the back we have four bags 2 speedbags 1 double end bag and our gym emphasizes on sparring alot & sparring hard theres a rack full of gear on th right and everyone jumpss rope & & tehres plenty of room to strech ...
anyway its good to hit hard when you spar & keep the pace up but not to try to bull sombody you just wanna get the work in ...anyway anyway our gym is only open from 3PM to 6pm 5 days a week and we run on saturday mornings (road work is usually a personal thing)
anyway its sortof a really professional gym i'm one of the only amatures cause Kelly Pavlik has teh same trainer and there are a few other youngstown based pros also ...anyway my old gym i went to when i was akid was under a post office in a basementy and it was nice but the old man had his 1st fight in 1955 and he wasnt really doing well keeping his program up but was very good on technique & having your basics down
Re: how do they train in your gym?
in my gym we usually start off with 4-5 rounds of skipping, (unless it's thursday, then we go hill running), after that, we spend some time doing ab work, push ups, situps, herpes, shadow boxing, then we do about 3 rounds of weights (punching out+moving), after that we do rotations which include(3 heavy bags, speed bag, floor to cieling and padwork) then you can either spar or go to excercises(push ups, situps, neck) The only bad thing is that by the time you end up sparring your so tired from the workout.
Re: how do they train in your gym?
Our gym is an old physics education room. There are about 25 heavy bags, a ring, pads and jump ropes. We warmup by rope jumping, with various bodyweight exercises in between. After that it's usually two or three rounds of shadowboxing. Then the inexperienced proceed to the bags, the experienced into the ring. The first hour focusses on technique, after that it's either sparring or bag drill. We finish off with rotating and stretches for cooling down. Sometimes we go running with a few guys but we have no beach so we just run through the city. Most of the time I run in my own time though.
Re: how do they train in your gym?
I think good trainers work with each fighter to work on a style that is right for them and not turn them out in molds ;)
Re: how do they train in your gym?
diddnt work out badly for me ;)
Re: how do they train in your gym?
The gym I worked at here in Phoeni had all brand new gear; mirrored all the way round, 4 hay bags, 3 floor to ceiling bags, a large (22 pounds or so) heavy bag, a weight room, a new ring...unfortunately no shaow boxing was allowed and only the high profile pros (like Tyson) that trained there were allowed in the ring most times. The rest of the time they ran secretaries and accountants through there at 240 dollars per month and boxing be damned.
Re: how do they train in your gym?
its kindof an old building
next to a mosque
and i think they gonnan tear it up and build a new skool or something
its really dope though
a lot of push ups sit ups bagwork techniques we practice the techniwues on each other gloves
al types of shit sometimes youre own pace
sometimes on count throwing 20 left hooks 20 right hooks 20 left 20 rights etc
really intense
Re: how do they train in your gym?
we do 3, 5min rounds of skipping with 1min of shaddow boxing inbetween each round of skipping. afterthat we strech for 10 mins or so . then 15 to 20 mins of floor exercises non stop. after that we do 20 mins of circuits whick include shaddow boxing, various different pressups and crunches, medicine ball work and weight exercises. to finish off we do all out sparring, then speed bag, heavy bad and floot to ceiling bag work. a warm down then thats it.
Re: how do they train in your gym?
the gym i go to is quite nice for a boxing gym u know changing rooms and all tht went portsmouth naval base the other week and there gym aint tht good considering all the money the army got
usually we strt off with shadow boxing then do sum technique then the group is split up to experienced and unexperienced some spar and some do more technique then probs skipping and fitness
Re: how do they train in your gym?
well we're divided up into seperate groups by age and experience.. but we start 10 minutes of stretching, then we do bag work, depending on which group.. we do stations of bag work.. and then we branch off to sparring, shaddow boxing, rope, weights
Re: how do they train in your gym?

Re: how do they train in your gym?
to develop timing and range.
I'll post what my Gyms like soon... ;)
Re: how do they train in your gym?
Even though this topic is old i thought I would add to it.
Our gym is open from 12-9. I have only been through the daytime so i dont know what its like at night.
The gym is divided into 2 floors. Women/fitness area is upstairs and the pros and amateurs train downstairs. I havent been upstairs so i dont know what the set up is like there.
In the gym there are usually one to three coaches in there. Each fighter seems to be taken under the wing of a coach. I have a coach who is 76 years old, the other coach who was there when i joined didnt want to train me because he cant speak English! (The gym is in japan btw) lol
There are no lessons as such, the coach shows you things and keeps an eye on you to see how you are doing. We train 3 minute rounds with 30 seconds rest. If you are looing a bit tired, my coach lets you take it easy or have a bit of a longer rest between rounds.
The coach makes me warm up with about 4-7 rounds of skipping, depending on how he feels. Then he shows me a couple of combinations and we practice them on the pads. 2 or 3 rounds.
After that he puts me on the heavy bag, usually for about 4 rounds. Again, it depends on how much he feels that I need.
After that, about 3 rounds on the double end bag and maybe a bit of weight training if I have any energy left. And a round or two of skipping to finish off.
The gym has quite a lot of skipping ropes, gloves and headgear. We can leave our gloves, shoes etc in the gym and just write our names on them. So you have to check that the gym owns the stuff before you use them. There is a big mirrored area for skipping and shadow boxing. There is also a rope between two pillars for slipping punches.
There are 4 heavy bags. Two are quite light which are used for practicing fast combinations. The other two are very heavy and are for practicing power punches and combinations.
There is also a double end bag and two speed ball mounts with no speed ball on them. And a ring of course.

Simple,I yell at people, and they do as I tell them ;D
If not,I yell louder
If theyre still not doing it right,I use sarcasm, and maybe even a clever metaphor ;D ;D
