Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
What all-time fighters fighters would have generated more revenue than FM if they had the opportunity to fight in this era?
Roy Jones. Even though he is not nearly as polarizing as Floyd, his skill and entertaining style alone would generate more ticketband PPV sales.
Mike Tyson, obviously.
Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Sugar Ray Leonard
Oscar De La Hoya

Yeah, and I'd throw in Tyson and Ali to the list.
Ali would have drawn crazy money. I can just imagine him in his prime dealing with today's racial climate. He would have been a superstar in any era.
Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Probably quite a few HWs from the past because HWs always generate more money.

This is the highlight reel era where boxing plays second fiddle to knockouts. Where announcers call pugilists boring and guys like Rigo have to fight in China. The irony is if Floyd Mayweather was just starting today he'd most likely be ignored. That's why its so puzzling as to why he draws the way he does. He does the same thing Rigo does or Locche or Pep and those two most likely would not make it to the big time in today's market either.

Yes I do not see why he gets so many ppv either. He will never stop anyone at welterweight, even Khan, and is not a heavyweight. It is based on past accomplishments and hype.

Floyd has successfully built his "brand" better than anyone else in boxing history. He doesn't make his money by being exciting. Controversy Creates Cash, Floyd rarely provides excitement but he never fails to produce controversy.
I think people are also just attracted to greatness. People who don't follow boxing know about Mayweather and know he's the top boxer in the world, and are naturally intrigued by his status and by the high stakes his fights provide (protecting the 18 year undefeated streak, the coveted 0). He's become a crossover star and the face of boxing, like a Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, ect.

Yup he is unique to draw the way he does in this fast food era. Another thing to consider is that although tough to calculate, there is most likely a significant amount of buyers that do so with the hope of seeing the man lose. The "I was at x" syndrome when Mr. Unbeatable got beat plays a role along with the world connectivity. I watch a fair amount of Al Jazeera and even they have him prominent on their sports banner background.

Without question it's a large percentage, I'd even venture to guess that the majority of people watching his fights want him to lose. But those are all still people that Floyd brings to the table. Being a big draw doesn't necessarily mean you're the most popular. Floyd does his Money Mayweather character, he chose to play the villain and in doing so he's gotten people emotionally invested in his fights, either for him or against him. Everybody wants to be the beloved hero, Floyd chose the villain role and it made him very rich.
Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Probably a number of guys, assuming they were on top of the sport and marketed themselves properly. Imagine Tyson or Ali around today with a twitter account, viral videos all the time? Chaos.
Without the fan base and platform he shares with 50 cent and rubbish like that, I don't think Floyd would have broken anyones records even at his best and in his biggest fights. He is a cunt, but also a boring guy with no real charisma at all, so it is very impressive that he's sold like he has.
Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Had he put his ego aside and showed up on time to the press conferences and made more cameos on television here and there which is lacking in most fighters anymore then Roy Jones for sure.

I attribute his win to the cash cow :DLH.
Before then he couldn't sell PpV, and he was the B side to that fight.
2nd as much as I loathe to agree with Arum on anything: his point IMo is rock solid; Floyd somehow connected himself to the Mexican holiday, Mexico supports boxing.
And when he fought Hatton...it was his fans that packed Vegas. Not Floyd fans.Between villain and fans showing up to see him lose is funny but seemingly true.
Tyson would've been a major attraction in any era.
RJJ I dont think so, when he made history winning the HW title The Thomas and Mack center was a quarter empty. RJJ for whatever reason has never been a PPV attraction.

Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Tyson, Chavez Sr., Ali, Oscar and Ray Leonard IF Sugar had guys like Hearns, Duran and Benitez there with him.
People forget that Chavez Sr. was the first true Mexican star with world wide appeal. They just don't give El Grande Champion his just due.
Re: Who would have drawn more than Floyd in this era?
Ali would have been a billionaire in today's era, he was a genuine superstar and a magnificent fighter in any generation. Jack Dempsey also had a dangerous glamour and dark magnetism.
