losses you never quite got over
For me, the big one is Trout vs. Alvarez. IMO it was a close fight but I think Trout won. Either way the judges scores were absolutely ridiculous. Trout was not going to win that fight walking in without a knockout. Alvarez was being groomed for PvP and super stardom.

Re: losses you never quite got over
Hatton/Pacquiao was the worst. The result had me in bits. I was so pumped for it, but it was over in a flash and Hatton was out in a shocking way. I have never let myself become so emotionally invested in a fight since.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
hatton mayweather
i dont know whether or not hatton would have ever had a chance against mayweather, mayweather has looked unbeatable since, but the ref made sure that hatton wasnt winning on the night
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
im still angry to this day whenever I think about the judges giving Ray Leonard the decision against Hagler. On the same theme, there is no way in the world that the Hearns Leonard rematch was a draw.
I was a huge Tyson fan, and I remember going into shock as I watched Buster Douglas batter him. Fair play to Buster, that was a great great performance.

Don't worry mate, the rest of us do know. He wouldn't.

Re: losses you never quite got over
First time i watched The Champ
http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/i...he-champ_l.jpg
Probably Bruno v Tyson 1 - sat up all night and listened on the radio.
Really though Bruno could spark him
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Zarate vs Gomez. I watched that fight for the first time two days ago.
Little Red Lopez losing to Bobby Chacon. That one took a long time.
Lopez losing to sanchez. Twice. I still hold that grudge.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Roy Jones vs Tarver and Johnson. Roy Jones was the fighter who got me interested in boxing and to see him go out like that after 15 years of boxing brilliance was hard.
Roberto Duran has always been one of my favs and to see him go out like he did vs Leonard 2 and Hearns was pretty bad too.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Foreman/Frazier got to me but I'd have to say Hearns/Leonard. Watched it live on closed circuit at the old Corral in Calgary. I disliked Leonard immensely and Tommy was my favourite. My buddy had a man crush on Leonard. I was rubbing his face in it for 39 minutes and then......
Arguello/Pryor 1 happened in that same time frame and that got to me also but not like Hearns/Leonard. Tito/Hop followed. I was at a party and left. Went downtown to a pub, handed the bartender my keys and got shit faced. Roy/Tarver ripped pretty deep because Roy was right up there with Tommy but I half expected it after Ruiz and how he looked in the first Tarver fight.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Gutted at all Nigel Benn’s losses – my favourite ever fighter and I was on edge watching him fight live. Devastated by the Eubank loss and the two where he quit against Collins
I could handle Bruno’s defeats more as I expected them !
Felt deflated as Hatton crashed to the canvas against Mayweather. Had been lucky enough to get a ticket and go across and was convinced by fight night Hatton was going to do it – got a little carried away to be fair….
Was also pissed off with Lewis when he was out of shape and ill prepared for Rahman I.

I agree on each but
Leonard vs Hagler and
Leonard vs Heard are by far the worst for me.
Strangely I respect Leonard as much as any fighter now.(even if he started all the money issues in the sport as far as I'm concerned)

Re: losses you never quite got over
Have to say Froch v Groves 1 left a bitter taste in the mouth. Groves had done everything he said he was gonna do and dismantled Froch. They were both fucked at te time of the stoppage and I think he could've beat Froch.
Funnily enough, I reckon Groves himself will have more regrets about the 2nd fight cos he fucked it up really, clearly conserving energy to get through the championship rounds and getting caught by a sucker punch (albeit a very good one!)
Tyson losing his invincibility was a bit of a piss off as well.

As stated nothing tops Hearns/Ray 1 for me and I really had no dog in the fight with Ray and Marvin. I had grown to respect both but that was after that stacked era calmed down. I think I may have scored the Hagler/Leonard fight more times then any other fight and the best I can come up with is a draw. I have never scored that fight for Leonard. Shit I think we scored it once together years ago.
He really was the Floyd of his day. Still the biggest draw in the sport 3 years after retirement. Still think Floyd might pull something similar although he's already retired for over 3 years;D
Not sure why Hagler gave up 15 rds, gloves, ring size and came out fighting right handed? A severe case of hubris or something.

Re: losses you never quite got over
Wilfred Benitez vs. Bruce Curry I
I was there at Madison Square Garden.
We sat in disbelief as the Scorecards were read.
A 'horrible' Decision against Bruce.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Briggs over Foreman. Maybe the worse decision in history.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
The most recent for me was the first Price fight against Thompson. Particularly after having compiled and posted this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K3Bse1-FSg
Hatton Pacquiao also was pretty scary nobody seemed to check if he was OK and for a minute I thought he was a goner. His last fight against Senchenko was almost as bad for different reasons. He was a shadow of the fighter he used to be but he still hung in there for a few rounds which made the inevitable even more bitter a pill to swallow. Bruno/Tyson again particularly after Harry's "he's hurt Tyson...get in there Frank" ;D
God there are so many :-\ That's why I don't bet anymore;D

I think the book called
In the Corner: Great Boxing Trainers Talk about Their Art...Has the Petronellis brothers saying the same thing. They didn't prepare him to come out orthadox..and even felt he gave away the first 4 rounds because of it.

Part of me suspects coming out right handed was in the contract haha

Re: losses you never quite got over
10 years old watching Holmes beat up Ali. Fought back tears, like Ali, I didnt fight well enuff to win.
I didn't even know Tyson was scheduled to fight Buster Douglass. Next day headline simply read "It's True." Watching him on his knees, getting up with a mouthpiece hangin' out his mouth, I was shook.
Bowe stopping Holy fight 3- Hoy went down like that was the heart attack fight.
Toney stopping Holyfield. His trainer just walked in & hugged him like--its over man, let it go...
Gomez stopping Gatti. Nuff said.

Re: losses you never quite got over
Cant believe the UFC fight with gus a few nights ago went down like that, first time in history we host something this big in sweden and it ended in less then 3 minutes. everybody was watching, this will not be good for boxing/ufc it self. can't get over it, I'm on a vacation and been buried inside my sheets at this hotel for the last couple of nights now with a bottle of vodka next to me! Hopefully i can get over this soonish!

Re: losses you never quite got over
Grant stopping Herol Graham. I could not talk to anyone for hours as I was so upset.
-
Re: losses you never quite got over
Tyson vs. Holyfield 1. Still shocks me. He was gone then... really gone and done.
DLH vs. Trinidad. That was the greatest robbery every on such a grande scale. That was by far criminal.
RJJ @ The 88 Olympics. Listen, if they had a problem with Americans, just say so. They should have given RJJ an honorary medal.
JCCSr. vs Taylor. That is one of the most heart-breaking moments in sports history. Imagine in the NBA finals, Michael Jordan breaking his ankle in the third quarter of the 7th Game, and the ankle break was caused by the opposing coach putting his foot in the middle of the court of play on purpose, with his team up by more than 30-- and the other team comes back to win by one point at the last seconds of the game? Shit makes you want to fucking shoot someone.

Re: losses you never quite got over
Morales vs Pac 2. It was sad seeing Morales having to quit. He was obviously weight drained and not the same fighter. It still upsets me that people still act like it's a big win. It was more sad than anything because Morales just wasn't himself anymore.

Never li8ked Leonard for the way he cheated my old friend in Texas Donald Curry. Don wanted to fight Hagler but Leonard who was supposed to be Don's advisor persuaded him to wait. All the while Leonard was negociating the fight with Hagler for himself. Made is worse when they gave Leonard a dec he didn't deserve

Re: losses you never quite got over
Tyson/Lewis was pretty hard too, I was new to boxing and of course loved Tyson like most do, and to see him get KTFO over and over on the sports shows the morning after sucked. I hated Lennox for years for it.

First PPV I refused an invite to.
Based on who they were feeding to Tyson: McNeely & Mathis, I just couldn't see Tyson beating him, in fact to this day...I have never watched the whole fight.
Hard to not get over a loss, I refused to watch.

I always liked Herol and would have thought the Jackson fight would have been harder to stomach for his big fans. I thought Herol was about to get Julian in trouble and then..........
His fight with the body snatcher is one of my favourites.

Strangely if you had to lose that would be the best way to lose. Beating your opponent for 3 1/2 rounds on the verge of stopping Jackson and then getting knocked out clean.

It took me years to watch the fight, I was very new to boxing so I didn't understand that the formerly great Tyson was a lamb being lead to the slaughter against Lennox the same way so many were lead to him in the 80s.
That fight was so big. I remember having to make a collect call from a payphone a few days later and the middle aged female operator asked me if I saw the fight and we had a short conversation about how we couldn't believe Tyson lost hahah, EVERYONE was talking about it.

I knew Tyson would lose, but that did not stop me hoping he would win after a good first round. The rest of the fight was just a beat down.

Re: losses you never quite got over
I guess the one-punch KO loss to Rahman Lewis suffered a year prior gave a lot of people hope that Tyson could land that one home run shot.

Press over here were hying the fight but Tyson was smoking spliff in Haiwai whilst in training.

Re: losses you never quite got over
Herol Graham lost to Mike McCallum by a point deducted by the referee after he turned his opponent. That was bad luck. remember that fight because the commentator Harry Carpenter could not commentate during the fight only in-between the rounds as they were on strike. It was unusual experience watching the fight.
