BBC News - Sir Winston Churchill's funeral marked 50 years on
There have been a few movies made about him, 'Into The Storm' was a good one
that last picture looks like a character of Tony Soprano words shall I say James Gandolfini how can I be Winston Churchill I don't see any church or hill in the background and all of England must know that the cigar that he is pictured smoking in that photo is not the actual kind of cigar that he smoked on a daily basis in fact he love Cuban cigars almost as much as hondurena in cigars and there are even some cigars from El Salvador Guatemala and other Caribbean countries which grow tobacco in such a way that Winston Churchill would have loved to have smoked a few of those in the past and over it is too late now he's not smoking in the picture and everyone knows the picture is fake.
Would of been a mean poker player.
Almost became a Muslim too. The knighthood is usually given to perverts and arms dealers so be cautious in praising a man that condemned millions to death.
You don't have to be a sycophant to respect what Churchill achieved. The guy dealt masterfully with the cards that were handed to him at the time, and the fact that he was far from perfect does not negate his achievements. This revisionist view of history where everyone is dismissed with the benefit of hindsight, just ends up throwing out the baby with the bath water. He warned about Hitler back in the 1930's so acute was his judgement at times. Millions of people lined the streets for his funeral procession because of what he represented for them. He unified a small country against a huge and seemingly overwhelming threat and inspired both the troops at war and the civilians at home. He was a great writer, soldier and pragmatist, and had a bucketful of wit for every occasion.
When accused of being a hypocrite in wanting to help the Russians (when attacked by the Nazis) despite not being a huge fan of Communism
"Not at all. I have only one purpose, the destruction of Hitler, and my life is much simplified thereby. If Hitler invaded Hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons."
His comments on his meeting with Ibn Saud, a Muslim ruler
"A number of social problems arose. I had been told that neither smoking nor alcoholic beverages were allowed in the Royal Presence. As I was the host at luncheon I raised the matter at once, and said to the interpreter that if it was the religion of His Majesty to deprive himself of smoking and alcohol I must point out that my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred right smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after, and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them."
Some more of his famous wit
Lady Astor: "Winston, you're drunk". Winston: "But I shall be sober in the morning and you, madam, will still be ugly. "
Lady Astor (first woman MP in the House of Commons): "Mr Churchill, if you were my husband, I'd put poison in your tea." Winston (getting unsteadily to his feet): "Madam, if I were your husband ... I'd drink it."
At the end of his life though bent double he still managed to hang on to his wit
Churchill grew increasingly physically frail in the last months of his long life. Near the end he was seen waiting for a friend in a corridor of the House of Commons (from which he himself had retired). He was bent double on his stick and seemed oblivious to everyone around him. Two current Tory MPs were passing and exibited all the compassion and loyalty for which that great party is noted. One said to the other, sotto voce: "They say the old chap's gone quite crazy." Quick as a flash, Churchill was heard to mutter: "They say he can't hear as well."
When I think of Churchhill, I always imagine the enormous pressure he's been through during the constant bombing by, excuse me Britons, clearly superior power, and still managed to smile and cheer you folks up during one of your darkest and most frightening time of history. Amazing fella indeed...
Churchill was an obese drunkard who cost killed million of men because of a debt to a Jew, he is of no discernible talent or achievement and is a disgrace to politics and humanity.
He simply played the cards as he saw them every time for better or worse and did it for England and freedom.
Germany was about to fly reconnaissance planes over England to find out where to bomb,So he got thousands of plastic blow up tanks and planes and filled the fields with them,Germany shit themselves went back to make more of the same, putting the war on hold and all of England worked 24/7 to build their real numbers of craft up to scratch.
Knew via his code breakers about the Japs plans to bomb Pear harbour and kept it under wraps to play America into the war.
@ryanman I always admired Winston Churchill for his fortitude and for his intestinal tenacity during very difficult psychological and mental situations went out of Hitler the snake was saturation bombing England and then and then went on to develop radar at the crack and not cheat code for the bombing schedules
If you need a leader in War time it's Churchill, no War you don't need him a bulldog of a man,
but unfortunately in his time in power, a typical Tory he's sent in the solders against striking
miners he called them dogs,! a great man in War needs must at the time.
I do not think saturation bombing of civilians is anything to be considered admirable.
Needs must at the time what you must remember, at the time Hitler was exterminating Jews, nothing
is really admirable in War,but standing by doing nothing is a none starter.
In Wars lots of civilians get killed, as we speak civilians are being killed in the Middle east,! nothing
changes, lets face it Churchill had a dirty job to do but SOME ONE had to do it.
I have no problems with what had to be done in WW2, it may not be admirable but it was necessary.!
Yeah but look at the Japs too if you guys hadnt of bombed out those two cities right in their own home they would still be fighting you.
Germany was the same they bombed London for the same reasons that we eventually flattened them at their home. Its called ending it for good.
Germans call Churchill a war criminal - Telegraph
Churchill was a war criminal who stated himself that the murder of civilians was the way to go. Now you can use whatever metrics you like, but that man was both a war criminal and a terrorist. It's easy to pit an us against them style rhetoric, but the enemy has never been the German people whom the British slaughtered in their millions. The enemy has always been the elite on both sides and as usual the working classes were sacrificed at the altar of lunatics and paedophiles. Now I haven't done the research, but there are a lot of allegations that Churchill was a paedophile and of course when you factor in the Knighthood and the praise from the likes of Cameron, then it all starts to fit together in a rather obvious way. Of course we should always remember the holocaust and the great Churchill (and at the same time cover up current day paedophilia and ignore the Palestinian holocaust). It all fits together all too easily. People are either too stupid or too ignorant to connect the dots. 'How dare you criticise the great Churchill! You would be speaking German!'. So did the monarchy until quite recently and they supported Hitler too! At least I am consistent in that I oppose both Hitler and Churchill.
Of course. We could go back as the first world war, but at the least The Treaty of Versaille should have never been imposed on Germany. It was inhumane and cruel and led to extremism. When people have nothing to lose they will either start a revolution or vote for something extreme. In this case the German people voted for the extreme, though of course they didn't realise just how extreme the Nazi's were. You see it in the modern day where austerity is put in place again because of stupid politicians and greedy bankers. There is another way and that way is to treat people with dignity and respect. It seems we will never learn. Churchill was an establishment puppet and seemingly the last thing on his mind was the welfare of working people who he slaughtered on both sides. I would love to know how many Eton graduates fought and died as compared to the rest of the population. The British even had to get rid of Churchill to see in the welfare state. He was the benefactor of the Establishment and that is why he must be worshipped, but it is false idolatry. It doesn't take much of a leap to see Churchill as loony and genocidal as Hitler. He was quite bonkers.
Ohh ohk den,
about why'd dem Gerries bomb our local chip shop thun eh?
Fookin ansa me Dat.
I completely agree I think the germans and the japanese both deserve to be saturation bond if it were not for the fact of the 2 atomic bomb is being dropped on Nagar sake and heroshima in 1945 doing the month of august the japanese would never have surrender and in that case united states and a japanese would have lost millions and millions of trooips so therefore in this case it was the little lesser of 2 evils
Miles, admiration is not idolatry, and to suggest that Churchill, one of the greatest speech writers and pragmatists who changed his political party three times, and made decisive decisions, often contrary to his advisors, was a puppet, is a bit daft. And now you are suggesting he was both a war criminal and a paedophile? Seriously it just comes across as being contrary for the sake of it and condescending to everyone else as though we are all a bit stupid or something. You don't have to agree with everything someone does to recognise their merits. Not every non working class person is a nonce or a cunt.
Beanz, recently there was been a lot of 'Praise Churchill to the skies' in the media which washes over his own genocide in India, his carpet bombing of Dresden, and almost nobody ever mentions his fondness for the company of younger men. I am not trying to be contrary, but merely to point out that he wasn't such a great man and that in terms of war crimes he is little different to Hitler and that in terms of sexuality he may well have been your classic Establishment peadophile which is something even Hitler would rather avoid.
I don't understand Churchill as a so called great leader. The greatness was in the men who took great risks for their country in a war that would never have occurred had the Treaty of Versailles never forced Germany into their own permanent austerity. Politicians like Churchill led to rise of Nazi Germany and some in the monarchy even admired Hitler. I will never respect a man who carpet bombs innocent people. Never. And if he buggers children, then even worse. His writings for instance, will never atone for his elitist barbarism.
Churchill and Hitler are two sides of the same coin to me.
