Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
Mikkel Kessler Claims Retirement, No Comeback - Boxing News
He couldn't secure that big fight and calls it a day. Great career and a great champion, he won't be forgotten.

Kessler has done some amazing things in his career he did not need a career defining fight against Froch or Ward and ward are on to higher and bigger things and especially with fried ch is trying to put the icing on his cake of a wonderful career when Froch knocks out the Charlatans named Chavez jr. In Las Vegas then retire

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
I don't think this is the end for him.
He has a big name and good following and there isn't massive depth at super middle. He will make a high profile opponent for someone needing to make a defence on a big show.

He said that he's been offered fights and decent money but it doesn't motivate him. He wants a Froch or ward type fight.
-
Good for him, hope it sticks and he finds something to replace boxing in his life.
-
Best of luck to him, he was one of my all time favourite fighters. I think he took too long to decide what he wanted to do after the Froch defeat, and that's why the big fight isn't there now.
Gave Calzaghe and Ward the toughest fights of their careers, which is no mean feat.

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
All the best to him. He never recovered mentally from the Calzaghe throttling. I think that was compounded by Ward.

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
Kessler is a good guy and gives it his all. I think he still can have that rubber match with Froch or Ward eventually but he does not want to wait. If Froch can not get Chavez then Kessler in Vegas in a neutral venue would be perfect.

LOL! Hope he can find things to fill idle time, instead of having coke line competitions with Hatton.

He was a good fighter and always gave his best. He never quite cemented himself as the best 168 lber in the world.

I may have to watch that fight again. I don't remember a throttling. I thought it was competitive early, including a big uppercut that hurt Calzaghe a little. Then Calzaghe adjusting and Mikkel not having a plan B.

That was exactly how it went down. Kessler (along with many 'experts') thought he had Calzaghe's number. When Joe changed it up and Kessler had no answers he was mentally broken, you could see it immediately in the ring, Kessler pretty much said so himself I think.
It wasn't a shelling in the manner of Jeff Lacy but it was a career damaging one.
Kessler deserves nothing but respect, class act in and out of the ring. Hope he enjoys retirement.

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
A really good, solid, tough and competitive pro. He had excellent technique and never turned up unfit. Didn't duck anyone, and came across as a good guy.
Easily on if the best European fighters of his generation. A major star in Denmark (but he has a seriously dysfunctional family who do stuff like reality TV, so I hope he finds something to do that keeps him satisfied and grounded)
Adios champ, it was great watching you and you always gave us our money's worth,

Ditto.

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
Not sure why froch thinks fighting a martinez leftover is gonna further his legacy any more than having a decider with kessler
Shame ward would return the favour either. Wish Mikkel well in retirement

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
His KO of Allan Green was classic.

He was knocked down himself in that fight which could have demonstrated that he was not as good as he once was.

For sure. It was a peach of a left hook though.

Re: Mikkel Kessler calls it a day
I remember Royal. Fucking weirdo. Kessler would have been horrified that such a piece of shit was a fan of his.

Thankfully I missed him posting although I do remember another poster called Barley who had racist tendencies posting here years ago.

Green wasn't much we know that but remember prime ward went 12 uneventful rounds with him & couldn't put him down. Past prime kessler sparked him in 3. That's another way of looking at it
