I've just seen lamont Peterson in the queue at Starbucks
If it wasn't him it was a close family relative
I'm sure he was taking dbol with his coffee too
Allan minter, chris eubank, Scott welch and that's about it.
I have met and spoke with Lucian bute, eric Lucas, roy Jones and darren barker.
Barrera on the street in Vegas by MGM - asked for a photo
Tommy Hearns walked through a bar in Vegas too - was too star struck to ask for a photo
Johnny Nelson in the Wardrobe bar in Leeds
Naseem Hamed in his car in Manc blowing horn like a tosser
Amir Khan being a prick driving his Lambo, or a borrowed one, round Leeds city centre loop several times. Blowing horn too
Eubank in Dorchester bar couple of years back. Was sat on his own. Kick myself I never went up for a chat to this day
i saw Steven Foster JR with his mrs in the Local park pushing his kid on a swing
I saw Mike Tyson walking down the street in NYC. He was still boxing at the time. Surrounded by body guards and had a I'll kill you all look on his face. I was just a kid at the time and he actually scared me.
I forgot - I once saw Nicky Piper walking through Hyde Park
I had a pen and a camera with me but when I asked him he didn't want either from me
I shared the same gym with none other than 'The Atomic Bull' Oliver McCall and I was a sparring partner for a few local pros that nobody has heard of. I met Eddie Gregg as well who fought Gerry Cooney. Eddie is now training fighters and I sparred one of his guys, tall southpaw, never got his name though.
None casually, but @ a few IBHOF's -those who I talked with & not just saw go by.
Micky Ward- we talked several times, once about ten minutes. Man he dsecribed how bad his hearing got after his 2nd fight with Gatti. That day was real for me.
Michael Carbajal- He thinks I look like Cabalerro- He joked with Aaror Pryor that if the fans pressed him he'd use his bodyguard Caballero- Great moment!
Aaron Pryor & a guy who ran a boxing site named Erik- each year we'd take a pricture doing the HAWK with our fists out.
I forgot Arron Pryor's son's name- the one who boxed- he kept referring to me as Uncle..that was cool.
Chazz Witherspoon- drove him around with his dad. Real humble guy. Talked with him on the phone afterwards- they invited me to his fight with Arreola- glad I didnt make it...that would've been sad.
Nate Campbell- When he found out I was an author, he gave me his number on how to finish his book. He & his wife went on to write one. Dude is kinda cocky, but looked up to me as an author my (political) book was a pretty good sale that year.
Leon Spinks- we've dranked together & got into a lauhable disagreement on why I joined the USMC. Man we got tore...UP!!! His wife remembered me the previous year & scolded me--dont get Leon (too) drunk this time.
Ken Norton. R.I.P I told him a private joke when I asked to take a photo with him- after that -I sat down in the booth with he & his wife. Felt special to be there and make Ken laugh like a muthajumpa!
Bert Sugar- everytime I ran into him he'd always have a story to tell. R.I.P I got him on my cell phone -when two ring card girls asked to take a photo. I yelled..So Bert is the real sugar man, huh? To which he replied... Yeah but the reason why I take Viagra..is to keep from pissing on my shoes!
Thomas Hearns @ the Showtime SuperSix tournament- Man his demeanor is mean as hell- but he is a cool dude. Tall as shit. How was he a WW?
Antonio Tarver- told this somewhere on this board- he looked me up & down..Guess I was 2cool.
Lou Duva- assisted him to his car, hotel, to the bar. He was real fragile, but always asked for me.
Livingstone Bramble- Another mellow guy.
Chad Dawson, my buddy messed up the photo like twice..I'm like man Chad, sorry, one more time? He was really cool..especially when I kept calling him (young buck) He's was like-- dude you dont look too much older than me...when I told him I was in my 40's:he complimented me.
At the IBHOF BBQ--I get to the front & the cook asked if we could wait to get more chicken- I SWEAR fellaz...one piece left Just as I asked for it-another guy does- Its Buster Douglas. I replied; Well shit...I guess we know who got this last piece! He laughed & talked until more came.
Marvin Haglar- outside of Grazi's restuarant where the boxers come in. I was too drunk to remember how I ended up there- but Haglar was F'n the coolest. At the bar-we got tore UP!
Jonathon Banks- forgot what fight I was at but he recognized ME?!! Hey you're that author who wrote the book about how fucked up the Republicans are right?! We talked for a few.
Talked with Marlon Starling a few times. A few fans listened to him talk about his fights for 1/2 hr.
The funniest boxer..sense of humor wise was Peter Manfredo Jr. I know he isnt a superstar- but down to earth.
I've seen quite a few but never talked with them like JCC, Sergio Martinez, Azumah Nelson.
R.I.P Alexis Arguello..I screwed up...we kept looking at each other, like he wanted to speak to me. But I wasnt sure it was him at first. Thought he looked to young to be Arguello.
Took a few photos with Ruben Olivarez, stood next to Erik Morales for a few seconds as he walked by. At a boxing banquet, got some up close shots of Mike Tyson.
The best was when I screwed up- bought some cheap batteries that ran out--I ran to the gas station to buy more- as I'm walking toward the grounds..Tyson was being whisked out in one of those golf cart things..fans chasing him..Im right NEXT to the Escalade that they took him , so I had my camera ALL UP IN HIS FACE. If I had good batteries I would've never gotten those shots. Didnt know my camera took video...so I acutally filmed the whole thing.
About a dozen more I just can't think of now...But IBHOF @ Canastota is the coolest.
in May of 1983 I met Rocky Graziano in Emerson New Jersey at the Emerson New Jersey Country Club. I was a banquet waiter that spring and summer in between semesters at my university. I went downstairs to the bar about 2 hours before the wedding banquet was to begin and my boss whose name was Peter birisi told me take a look over there at that man sitting at the table by himself do you know who that man is. So he led me over to the table and he says have a seat. The old man looked at me and he said do you know who I am. I said no. He said I'm rocky Graziano did you ever hear of me. At that time I was only 19 years old so I did not hear of rocky Graziano and I apologize to him.
I've met many but the only random encounter was when I saw Evander Holyfield checking into The W hotel in Hollywood. My first thought, this "bankrupt" man still stays at posh places.
I met Kostya back in his hey day got a few books signed. Met Vic Darchinian at a fight once too, think it was Sam Soliman fighting someone. You see him around here at times, Sam is a visitor to a nice older town 'Mornington' which is close by and full of nice restaurants these days, think his misses family is from there.
Ricky burns and willy limmond I used to train and morrisons gym for a few years there was also loads of other pros but can't remember there names.
Saw Zab Judah once at a hotel in Miami. Nice guy, but the guy he was with was a dickhead. I think he was one of the Goosen guys or something!?!?
Met a good lot of fighters when I was in Vegas.
Broner - cunt
Stiverne - Dick
Wilder - sound
Arreola - Legend
Porter - nice guy but I was completely pissed when talking to him
Judah - only got a pic so no time to talk to him
Omar Figueroa - nice guy and got him to sign a glove for me
Lee and Andy Selby - both nice guys.
Met a few around Ireland too
Tyson Fury - loves to talk about boxing
Ste Ormond and Spike O Sulivan - both sound lads
Barry McGuigan - great guy
Mick Dowling - will do anything for money
Bernard Dunne - didnt really have any time for me
How was Stiverne a dick? I'm just curious, I mean you say Broner was a cunt and it doesn't take much convincing for all of us to believe it, but Stiverne seems humble enough in interviews.
Met and shook Trinidad's hand first time at a charity event in San Juan. Years later saw him and exchanged a few words at a concert in San Juan. Saw John John Molina years ago working for a local phone company. Great guy, though a bit slurry in his conversation... product of a long, tough career.
Worked next door to chisora's parents house. Saw him getting out of his Beamer. Big bloke, very wide. Not tall though but he ain't known for his height.
I went to a play in manchester last night called Border Line and richie woodalls daughter was in it
richie was there on the front row, i was gonna say hello but he shot off straight away at the end
This thread is crazy. It's almost as if outside of the ring boxers live a relatively normal life and mix with the rest of us.
Vernon Parris...really cool and down to earth.
He was in pajama bottoms buying a flat screen TV.
Have met Ricky Hatton was really sound, was surprised how big his hands were but how small he seemed. Bruno the legend, called me Guv and was really sweet with my Mrs. Chris Eubank Sr on a train from London to Brighton, was going to chin him but he had a really big body guard with him ;D Actually he was quite approachable but after exchanging a few pleasantries I let him carry on his journey in peace. (He was sat opposite across the table).
Can't say it enough- if fortunate to have some time off June 8-12 go the BHOF. (Walrus-GO!) A lot of gloves gets signed. One glove I got Leon Spinks, Chad Dawson, Micky Ward, Hector Camacho (the year he passed) on the thumb is Steve Cunningham & Ken Norton.
A buddy mines has a glove to kill 4. Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manual Marquez..and as he asked Erik Morales to sign it- he stops, turns the glove over & sees their names, classic look on his face. I like my glove- but it wont be worth what George's glove will be.
