Leon Spinks ~ "The Road To Muhammad Ali"
Leon Spinks
"The Road To Muhammad Ali"
No sooner than Leon Spinks' exciting rampage thru the Light-Heavyweight Division {81 Kg}
at the Summer Olympics {July 1976} where he won a Gold Medal, the road was being set
for the Missouri fighter.
Leon, still a Corporal with the United States Marines in July 1976 {Age; 23 years, 0 months}
agreed to sign a Fight Contract with St. Louis businessman > Mitt Barnes.
In August 1976, Leon signed a deal that gave Mitt Barnes 30% of his Gross Earnings in
the Ring, and with a 'rider' for 12 {one-year} options.
Mitt Barnes had been an advisor for Leon since 1969, when Leon was a 'wild' 16-Year-Old.
As of August 26, 1976 >
Leon still had 11-Months to go on his hitch for the United States Marines, where he was stationed
at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Leon had wanted to fulfill his goal of making Sargeant, before being discharged, and then turning
Professional as a Heavyweight boxer.
Leon Spinks >
"I'm still a Marine. I didn't let the Gold Medal go to my head. I'm still up early in the Moring going thru
Marine training. When I get a furlough I head to Des Moines, Iowa to visit my Wife and her Mother -
Ms. Carrie Bush."

Leon Spinks gave me many many exciting and entertaining memories from the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Leon Spinks was on the American boxing team with Sugar Ray Leonard Howard Smith and many many other fighters including Michael spinks.
Leon Spinks did only five men on planet earth able to do. Joe Frazier, can Norton, Larry Holmes, and Trevor BB.

Re: Leon Spinks ~ "The Road To Muhammad Ali"
Leon Spinks
As soon as Leon won the 'Gold Medal' at the 1976 Olympics {July 1976}, many
Fight Promoters were lining up to lock Leon up in a Fight Contract.
But, Leon wanted to continue in the U.S. Marines and serve until July 1977 to
earn the rank of Sargeant.
Butch Lewis, who was a Vice President with Top Rank {Bob Arum} tried to secure
a Fight Contract with Leon.
The Plan >
To line up a 10-Round bout between Cuban Heavyweight - Teofilio Stevenson and Leon,
and to be set-up at a 'Neutral-Site' with the bout to be broadcast by CBS-TV.
The bout was to be held in Kingston, Jamaica.
Top Rank said that they would pay the Cuban Government $1,000,000 as a 'special fee',
so that Teofilio Stevenson could maintain his Amateur status, as no money would go to him
directly.
The deal, was to ask the U.S. Military for a 'special provision' to allow for Leon to fight
while still serving as a U.S. Marine at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Leon was to be paid 'handsomely' for his Professional Debut in a 10-Round Bout, and would
receive a Fight Purse of $125,000.
The U.S. Military did approve the request. But Premier Fidel Castro of Cuba said he was
not interested in the match.

It's amazing that he was such a military man and then his life went splat.

So True
In the United States Marines, Leon was a Corporal in 1976, and was working his way up to Sargeant.
Those who knew him at Camp Lejeune, said Leon was a good guy who didn't have a mean bone
in his body.
But, once he got his Honorable Discharge on December 23, 1976 > he became irresponsible.
Some say that Leon never really left the 'rough' Projects of Pruitt-Igoe in East St. Louis and
returned to bad behavior once he left the U.S. Marines.

Re: Leon Spinks ~ "The Road To Muhammad Ali"
December 24, 1976
Fight Promoter - Butch Lewis signed Leon to a 6-Fight Contract with Top Rank as the
Promoter, and for all the bouts to telecast by CBS-TV.
The contract called for Leon to receive a total of $65,000 for '6-Bouts'.
Mitt Barnes was Leon's Manager, and he would receive 30% of each Fight Purse.
Butch Lewis negotiated a deal for Leon to make his Professional Debut on Saturday -
January 15, 1977 in Las Vegas.
At the time, Leon had just been 'Honorably Discharged' by the U.S. Marines on
December 23, 1976.
Leon then headed back home to St. Louis, Missouri and then to Des Moines, Iowa to
be with his Wife, and at her Mother's home to spend time to celebrate his
Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Marines as well as the Christmas Holiday.
Leon was no longer a slim 178 lb. {81 Kg} Amateur Light-Heavyweight from July 1976,
as his weight bloated to 200+ lbs.
Leon was supposed to go to Wilmington, Delaware to Butch Lewis' home on December 27th,
to train and prepare for his bout in 2 1/2 Weeks.
But, Leon had disappeared, and without letting Butch Lewis know where he went.
Finally on December 31st {New Year's Eve}, Butch was able to track Leon down in Des Moines, Iowa.

is where you learn on how to fight. Not in the Ring on Television."
"I only had 3-Days notice for this bout, but I'm in shape. My record, well I've won 22 of 25, and scored
13 KO's. I could hit pretty good until I got married in September 1974. Then, I only had 1-Bout in almost

~ Leon Spinks Cleans Up In Debut ~
~ Leon Spinks Puts Out Lightning ~
Leon Spinks over-whelmed New York's 'Lightning' Bob Smith, scoring a TKO @ 0:20 of Round 5
in his Professional Debut at The Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.
Spinks {196 lbs.} came out with 'blazing' both fists blazing in the Opening Round, as he battered
Bob Smith {185 lbs.} around the Ring.
Smith appeared to re-group late, and made an effort to stall Leon's attack, but was 'rocked' at the end of
the Round by a hard 'left-right' combination to the head.
A the end of the Round, Smith 'staggered' back to his Corner.
In Round 2, Leon continued with his aggressive-attack, but Smith was fighting back with slashing left-hands.
In Round 3, Leon continued to slam away with hard-punches as Smith was beginning to show wear. Leon
'rattled' Smith several times with hard hooks to the head and was all over the New York fighter. Late in the
Round, Leon landed 'hard' right-hook to the head, and Smith crashed to the canvas. Smith was up at the
'6-Count' and finished out the Round.
In Round 4, Leon opened up with an all-out assault, and had Smith reeling from the blows. But the New Yorker
fought back with both hands and appeared to have slowed Leon down.
Then late in the Round, Leon landed a 'pair' of hard right-hooks to the head, and then slammed in a follow-up
left. Smith then slumped in a Corner. This time, Smith 'struggled' to get up at the '8-Count', but was saved by the Bell.
Coming out for Round 5, Leon went 'full-force' and battered Smith with a hard-flurry, knocking his mouthpiece ajar.
Referee - Richard Green jumped in and halted the bout at {0:20} of Round 5.

The British Heavyweight has gone 4-7-0 in his last '11-Bouts', and does not appear to be a danger for

After tagging the over-matched Brit with a series of combinations, Spinks unloaded a 'big'
right-hook to the jaw that dropped Freeman {196 lbs.} to the canvas.

~ Leon Spinks "I'll Win The Title By The End Of The Year" ~
After only '2-Bouts' and only 13:46 amount of time inside a Professional Ring, Leon Spinks
says that he will win the Heavyweight Championship by the end of the year.
Though we know that Leon can punch, we still don't know if he can fight.
In his Professional Debut on January 5th, Leon battered an over-matched Butcher's Helper
named 'Lightning' Bob Smith by a TKO in 5.
In his other bout {last Saturday Night} in Liverpool, England - Leon blasted out a 'patsy' in
only a Half-a-Round.
Leon, who received a Fight Purse of { $10,000 } for each bout, likes this type of work. But,
he dislikes the business end with Manager's, Lawyer's and Promoters' dipping their hands
in the mix.
Leon Spinks >
"I really don't like the Pro Ranks. I don't like the business of locked-contracts and options.
I just want to fight one bout at a time, and then move on to the next bout. But in this
business, you're always signing deals for the 3-Bouts in advance, or 6-Month contracts
with 3-Bout options."
"If they leave me alone to fight, I can win the Title by the end of the year."

Leon Spinks {198 lbs.} spent the first 90-Seconds of the Opening Round lightly-sparring
with the 31 1/2 year-old veteran Pedro Agosto {202 lbs.}.
Leon did 'nail' Pedro with a hard left-hook, but Pedro shook off the punch and forced Leon
backwards to the Ropes at the {1:30 Mark}.
Leon then looked toward his Corner for instructions, and Sam Solomon yelled;
"Work the body Leon, work the body."
Then suddenly, Leon skipped off the Ropes and delivered a right-uppercut, and '2' jolting
left-hooks to Pedro's jaw, followed by a battery-of-punches. Then Leon came back with
a 'vicious' left-hook to the jaw.
Pedro collapsed on his back, and slammed the back of his head on the canvas. Pedro struggled

Sam Solomon >
"Leon is showing great improvement from when I first had him in January. In only
4-Months, he has jumped by leaps-and-bounds. In his bout with Pedro Agosto, it was

'The Skinny'
Bruce Scott of Beaumont, Texas is the 3rd-Fighter chosen to be Leon Spinks' opponent.
The original opponent , George Jerome was deemed 'not physically fit', and the 2nd
opponent, Scotty Welsh injured his right-wrist in a sparring session on Monday.
Bruce Scott, a 9-Year 'Club-Fighter/Cannon-Fodder' out of Texas is brought in on 1-Day
notice. Bruce claims a record of 27-20-1 in '48-Bouts'.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'The Bout'
In The Opening Round, Leon is slow-and-steady over the first {2:10}, as Bruce Scott circles
and moves.
At the {2:15 Mark}, Leon moves in and unloads with a 3-Punch flurry, capped off by a 'jarring'
left-hand to the head. Scott goes down on right-side at the {2:22 Mark}.
The Texan is up at the '3-Count', and is ready to continue. Leon moves in, and Scott moves to
his right and away from Leon.
Leon lands a hard 'left-right' and backs Scott up into a Neutral-Corner. There, Leon lands another
jarring left-hand into Scott's head. Scott goes down again at the {2:47 Mark}.
Scott is up at the '6-Count' and survives Round 1.
In Round 2, Leon is steady, but easy in unloading on the over-matched Texan Club-Fighter. Late in
the Round at the {2:30 Mark}, Leon sends Scott reeling when he catches him with a 'looping'
right-hand to the head, but Scott 'grabs' Leon and holds him in a tight clinch.
At the end of the Round, Leon opens up with a 'fast-flurry', but most of his punches miss as Scott
'ducks-and weaves' until the Bell.
In Round 3, Scott tries to fight back early in the Round, and reels off 'two' crisp 3-Punch flurries
but Leon walks through the weak punches.
Leon slowly works the body, and by the {2:00 Mark} the Texan is looking 'worse-for-wear'. Leon
shakes Scott with a 'left-right-left', and sends him back into the Ropes at the {2:25 Mark}.
Scott is in 'survival-mode' as he tries to 'grab-and-hold'. Then at the {2:48 Mark}, Leon backs up
Scott with a 'right-left' and then follows up with a 'hard' right-hand to the top of Scott's head.
The Texan goes down at the {2:52 Mark}.
At the Bell, Scott is still on the canvas. The Referee - Rosario Bailargeon counts out
Bruce Scott after the Bell at the {3:02 Mark}.
Leon Spinks is awarded a KO 3 victory.

The 31 year-old Aird has a record of 18-10-5 {6 KO's}, and would present a

Sam Solomon >
"We would like to fight Billy Aird at the end of June, because we have an offer to go

Leon suffered damage to his eye in an August 5th sparring-session with 'lanky' Mike Koranicki.
Leon's eye was badly bruised. The eye was originally diagnosed, as just a 'bad bruise'.
But a week later, the eye was still bothering Leon. A specialist examined the eye on Friday ~
August 12th, and it was determined that Leon had suffered '2' small broken bones near the area
of the eye socket.
That bout was then pushed back {7-Weeks} to Sunday ~ October 15th.

~ Kevin Isaac Pulls Out Of Bout With Leon Spinks, Demands A Larger Fight Purse ~
New York Heavyweight - Kevin Isaac has pulled out of his bout with Leon Spinks scheduled for October 15th
in Las Vegas.
Isaac who was to receive { $10,000} for his appearance, demanded another { $5000 } for the scheduled
8-Rounder.
Kevin Isaac >
"I just found out that Leon is getting $20,000 plus an additional { $5000 in expenses}. That's fine, but he
shouldn't get more than 'twice' as much as me. I asked for another $5000. That demand is not out of range,
especially for a CBS-TV bout. Another $5000 is not going to break CBS Sports."

~ Leon Spinks Signs To Fight Scott LeDoux On October 22nd In Las Vegas At The Aladdin Hotel ~
The 24 year-old Spinks, with a record of 5-0-0 {5 KO's} has not fought since June 1st, and this will be far his
toughest test.
Scott LeDoux, a 28 1/2 year-old brawler who goes by the moniker of 'The Minnesota Farm-Boy', is a tough
brawling slugger who will surely give the younger Spinks all that he can handle.
LeDoux has a quality record of 21-6-1 {13 KO's}, and has been in with some rough Hombre's, including
George Foreman who stopped him in 4-Rounds.
LeDoux last fought on July 28, 1977 > where he was stopped by {L TKO 7} to Duane Bobick in a
rough battle in Minnesota.
This bout will scheduled for 8-Rounds, and will be the Co-Main Event along with a bout between Colombian
Heavyweight #10 WBC-ranked Bernardo Mercado vs. Gregory Johnson.

Scott LeDoux was nobody's pushover. Power punching right hand punching tough guy he would not back down and would go down with the ship

Barry Frank > President of CBS Television Sports
~ Leon Spinks Bout With Kevin Isaac Cancelled ~
We would have loved for Leon to fight Brooklyn's - Kevin Isaac here on CBS-TV on October 15th.
It would have been a great match-up between two young Heavyweights. Kevin is experienced
for a young guy {Age; 22 years, 8 months}. And his record of 12-5-1 {6 KO's} is much better
than it appears on paper.
But, back in August he verbally agreed to a { $10,000 } Fight Purse. We were going to give
him '3' Round Trip Airline Tickets so he could bring his Manager and Trainer from New York
to Las Vegas. And he would have all 'expenses' covered for the 5-Days that he was supposed
to be here.
On September 18th, I gave him { $2000 } in up-front Training Expenses. That was his money,
and he could do whatever he wanted with it.
Then on October 3rd, he demands another { $5000} for an 8-Round bout.
He was upset because Leon was getting { $20,000 } plus additional expenses. One contract
has nothing to do with the other.
All I know, is that earlier Kevin had signed a Contract to fight Leon at 'The Spectrum' in Philadelphia
on August 23rd. For that bout, Kevin agreed to a { $7500 Fight Purse }. He was fine with that.
Now we offered him more { $10,000 } and some, and he at first agrees. Now he complains.
I don't get it.

Re: Leon Spinks ~ "The Road To Muhammad Ali"
Leon Spinks ~ Fun Fact #12
October 5, 1977
Leon Spinks signed a contract to battle #10 World-Ranked Alfio Righetti on
November 18, 1977.
The winner of that bout would earn the right to 'challenge' World Champion
Muhammad Ali in February 1978.
Butch Lewis {Vice President of 'Top Rank'} promised the winner of the Spinks - Righetti
bout a Fight Purse between $300,000 and $400,000 in their challenge for the World
Championship.
Oddly >
Leon had yet to get by Scott LeDoux {set for October 22nd}.
At the time, Leon with a record of 5-0-0 {5 KO's} had less than 9-Rounds of Ring Experience
under his belt.

'The Skinny'
Leon Spinks has only had a total of 9-Rounds in the Ring in his 5-Bouts. Leon last fought 4 1/2 months
earlier on June 1st, where he scored an easy 3-Round Knockout over Bruce Scott.
But, Leon has been working out steadily with Joe Frazier as his sparring-partner in Philadelphia, and Leon
has been impressive.
Sam Solomon {Trainer} >
"All Leon has to do is pace himself. If he does that, he wins easy here. Scott LeDoux is tough and durable,
but he can't box with Leon. My guy is way too fast."
The word floating around >
* 'Is Leon Being Rushed'
* 'Are They Pushing Spinks Too Fast'.
* 'Leon Is Taking On Too Rough Of A Fighter In Scott LeDoux'
Scott LeDoux is in a 'no-lose situation'.
Scott is coming off a rough-bout with Duane Bobick 3-Months earlier {July 28th} where he was stopped
{L TKO 7}.
Scott had a 'bad flu' only 1-Week earlier, and he nearly had to pull out. But Scott is ready, and said he
would use his weight-and-brawn to wear Leon down.
Scott LeDoux >
"I can't match this kid in speed, but his fast-hands won't be worth 'Jack Shit' after I slam his body
with a few of my hard-punches. I plan to use my weight-advantage {+30 lbs.} to wear him down,
and then take his body apart in the Middle-Rounds."
