How many of you would have stopped Ali/Frazier 1?
Honestly? How many of you would have stopped Ali/Frazier 1 when Ali got back up and ate two more left hooks, particularly that monstrous left hook on the ropes- and the ropes had only held him up?
I know a few ref's that would have stopped that right then and there- Richard Steele would have stopped it, and Mitch Halpern probably would have stopped it too.
I think Mills Lane would have let it go on, so too would Smoger and Bayless- particularly Bayless, but for Smoger, if Ali had taken two or three more left hooks just like the second one after the knockdown, he would have stopped it or given a standing 8 count too!

How Ali got back up from that punch, I do not know. There would have been a riot and immediate rematch if the fight was stopped then.
What about the brutality of their 3rd fight.

ribs in Round 11.
The punch took the legs out of Muhammad, who was doing 'twinkle-toe dances' to stay
upright.
I would have stopped it there, as the bout was really over.

The second let hook after the knockdown on the ropes- back to the camera- was even more brutal. He was out on his feet. He nearly passed out. If Frazier had more energy, Ali would have been stopped.

You know in their 2nd fight Ali was going to stop Joe but the ref intervened for no good reason.

Bill is alright by me.
Yes the fight shouldve been stopped after that left hook where Don Dunphy yells "OH!! WHAT A SHOT!!!" about 20 seconds after the knockdown, that was sheer brain damage and unnecessary.

Naaah I wouldn't stop that, it was the last round and Ali was still intelligently defending himself. He took a hell of a knockdown but he bounced back up pretty quick. The right class was made by the ref and the right calls were made by the judges. No need to cast doubt on it IMO.

George Plimpton's boxing masterpiece "Shadow Box" gives a great account of how bad both guys were after that fight.
George was with Ali in the hospital after the fight when the doctor noticed that Ali's hip joints were swollen - an injury only seen by him, until that point in time, in car crash victims.

Some of those Frazier hooks were REALLY low. Around the hip and pelvis area.

I literally watched this yesterday and thought hmm when Ali trips and falls backwards into the ropes... This would probably have been stopped today ... Glad it wasn't !!! I'm a fan of mod-late stoppages ... Smoger etcs are OK by me! - loved mills lane too
