Fighters with great timing.
Who were they? I'd say Julio Cesar Chavez.

Junior is just a banger man. Just a banger. He is durable, however. But a banger he is and has become a much better boxer as of late. But, as it relates to timing, he is not the best of the best.
When we speak of timing, particularly with regard to "check hooks" and "counter-right hands" there is no better man in the business than Floyd Mayweather.
Another guy with EXCELLENT timing is Danny Garcia. He is not the fastest, he doesn't have bone crushing power, but his timing is superb and he wins fights on timing than anything else.

I meant Chavez Sr. And Chavez Sr. had good timing.

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Tszyu, Marquez, Randall, Tito...
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Kostya had it no doubt.
Cobra Curry
Tyson?
Julian Jackson was insane with it considering he was half blind which may have helped him with "margin of error factor".

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Finito Lopez perfect fighter.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Mayweather is superb with timing. And Bhop is pretty damn good also.

Re: Fighters with great timing.

Carlos Maussa, Victor Ortiz, Audley Harrison.
B. W. A. H. A.

Re: Fighters with great timing.
James Toney and Holyfield come to mind

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Roy Jones also had great timing. Just look at his fight with Virgil Hill.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Great timing is defined as a boxer who has a high percentage of punches landing which cause impact.
Carlos Maussa does not fit into that definition.

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Cassius Clay
He came along when Sonny Liston wanted to get out of boxing and 'cash in'.
He came along when Floyd Patterson was nursing a 'bad back' and trying recover from
back-to-back 1st-Round Knockouts to Sonny Liston.
Having excellent management with tons of money helped as well.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Having innate talent helped the most.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Carlos Monzon was methodical and thunderous, grinding down opponents with precision punching. He appears one dimensional, one paced, but he had extraordinary ring craftsmanship, timing and a paralyzing right hand. He broke fighters down who couldn't counter him enough to hurt him.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Salvador Sanchez, Niccolino Loche
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Vitali Klitschko is underrated for his timing. Actually reminds me of Monzon.

Says the guy that misquotes Larry Holmes. The biggest opportunist is heavyweight boxing history. Feeding off the table scraps of Ali's table.

Today Roman Gonzalez.

From current fighters Mayweather and Crawford come to mind.

Byrd, Toney, Calzaghe, Hopkins, heck all the champions had good timing.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Tyson in his heyday had superb timing.
It's the one thing he immediately lost after Rooney departed. People lament the demise of his defence, but his timing was the first thing to go and he never got it back.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
Timing and being in condition are both sides of the same coin for me. The better condition you are, the more you practice the better timing you have. Tyson did not train like he needed to the level to still be a champion.

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Miguel Cotto had phenomenal timing. Watch his fight vs a still dangerous and faster Mosely to see how timing can offset superior speed.

Cotto has pin point precision in his punches as well.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
That fight upset me because I wanted Mosley to win so badly but learned that Cotto was not just a brawler and had sneaky punches. He's so damn sneaky with his punches. ;D

Cotto was favourite to win that fight but Shane fought him to a close fight.
-
Re: Fighters with great timing.
I think Cotto-Mosley was a damn close fight and Shane finished stronger if I remember, will have to watch that one again.

It was a great fight, and EXTREMELY close with Shane switching to a more mobile/boxing style towards the end and Cotto fading. That being said, Shane couldn't fully pull away due to the fact that Cotto was consistently landing his jab despite Shane's advantages in foot and hand speed. That is a very underrated win for Cotto.

Re: Fighters with great timing.
Kostya Tszyu had great timing.

I tend to disagree. Kostyra was physically VERY strong and was exceptional at the middle distance and closer. Kostyra was a great fighter when he was on, and was pretty accurate and set up his shots well, but he seemed to be more of a strength/power guy than someone who relied on timing. Just my take though...

Kostya had great timing just ask Judah who is very difficult to catch that clean. Perfect timing.

I think Byrd gets overlooked quite a bit. Thinking about it his hand speed was right up there with some of the best at the time also. Not much pop but very sharp, one of the only guys I've seen make David Tua "Uggh" with a body shot. 6th round I believe.
Tapia had killer timing, great at rolling in hard body shots off leads. Going in and coming out.
