The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
On your knees ants! The two Lords are in da house. Their Royal Highnesses, Charlie "Byrd" Parker, and Dr. Dizzy Gillespie, sent down here from above!

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
Been to Birdland in Manhattan about 6 times, named after this great man. All saxes must bow.

I agree dude, and listen to this. I think it's a much better recording than those two you posted, his phrasing is so perfect.

Bro that is such sweet tone and his phrasing is like an extraterrestrial language. This man, God Bless Him for what he gave humanity. Have you heard this one man? One of my faves:

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
I saw this guy Sonny 4 times in my life: 1983, 1984, 1993, 2007 @p4pking
look how the instrument is still the same but so different now than what Byrd played

My daughter. She was never great but it made my heart swell when she played. Her mum played when she could use two hands and her great aunt before that. Still have the sax in the studio and I can get a sound out of it but don't really play.

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
sExophonist? Bill Klinton

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
Hahaha! ;D
I was always very down on the saxophone. In my mind it was a Kenny G instrument and very, very uncool. However, I have changed my mind and now appreciate what it can add to rock and roll. It's like saying guitars suck because of Bon Jovi. It's not a good way to look at things. My musical vocabulary doesn't really extend to jazz, so I cannot really add anything more about the saxophone.
-
My favorite sax player is Byrd followed by Sonny Fortune, Frank Foster, George Coleman and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

God Bless them and that is a touching description. Alto or tenor?

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
The saxophone looks like a very hard instrument to play. Breathing is a very underrated skill the best of times. I respect that.

Alto, although my daughter was a much better clarinet player and her mum's auntie played the tenor sax in fusion bands during the 60's.

Man... I hope you do something about that.
Jazz is an exquisite form of music.
The very best of it can uplift your soul and probably add years to your life (slight exaggeration).

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
@Gandalf Tito is right, this can resurrect a person, give a listen to this genius John Coltrane (solo starts at 8:22), but do take note of the Great McCoy Tyner on piano for a minute or 2, who gets the first cerebral extrapolation of the tune:
(I seen McCoy twice in The Village at 7th Ave South & 11th St----mindblowing live)

Hey... you're welcome anytime, brother.
BTW, you just brought to my mind that within the genre of jazz..... the subgenre of Latin jazz is obviously a huge favorite of mine. It blends the smoothness of jazz with the rhythmic beat and movement of Latin music, specifically Caribbean flavor style music.
-
Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
oh Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban Jazz is totally insane, what a fusion of styles, Charles Mingus went down there your way and traded off his ideas with theirs, ---two genius worlds merging.
Hey you know Bobby Sanabria? He came to Manhattan School of Music and directed this concert:

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
Brock, here is a more danceable version of Latin jazz, courtesy of one of the masters.... Willie Rosario.

Damn bro. That's a tough one right off the top of my head. I could name one or two bass players... but these are old veterans from back in the day. Guys like Bobby Valentin and the like. In this type of music the more prominent instruments are the keyboard (quite a few damn good pianists around that add that kick to Latin jazz)..... percussionists (very important)..... bass....and some of the wind instruments. But let me do some searching and see if I can come up with guitar players in this genre.
-
Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
There is the Puerto Rican cuatro.... a 10-string guitar.... but this is mostly used for Puerto Rican folkloric music. There are some awesome cuatro players today.... guys like Christian Nieves. You hear this instrument a lot around Christmas time, when a lot of these songs are played. It's more old style.... but wonderful to hear and enjoy. For Latin jazz and/or salsa..... the bass guitar is still the more prominent string instrument. Without a good bass guitar, it's very difficult to have what we here on the island call "salsa gorda", which is basically the salsa from the 60's, 70's and even 80's.... with the old master musicians putting together some awesome rhythms. Bands like Fania All-Stars, El Gran Combo, La Sonora PonceƱa, the bands of Willie Rosario, Tommy Olivencia..... man..... those were some monster musicians right there.

Re: The Best Saxophonist of ALL TIME
You are right, Tito. I should know more. I was out last week and the conversation turned to jazz and suddenly I was all out of words. I had to just sit quietly chewing on freshly barbecued meat. 'As a man of the world, you know so little' I thought to myself.
-
@SlimTrae. Chick kick ass Corea yes one of my all time favorite musicians no question about it bro. I had several of his albums from the seventy's and eighty's. have you ever heard Joe Zawinul play the keyboards? he is a monster
