I've thought him to be the best for awhile now.
He's not really come out of nowhere, he's been well known to the proper nerds for ages, he's been in The Ring's P4P top 10 since last year. Saturday night was his first time on American TV (HBO)
Ok thanks for the clarification.
Maybe it's that he's not in one of the more popular weight classes, which gives him a hill that's just a little steeper to climb than those who populate the lightweights, welterweights, middleweights, etc. I love to see those little guys with "big guy" power, though.
Yeah, it's nice to see the little guys getting some of the spotlight, especially when they have KO Power. Deserves to be where his in the p4p rankings.
He looked great, not only offensively but defensively. Constantly picking off shots and landing his own flush counters.
People seeing him for the first time shows how wrong this sport is as far as giving visibility to the right fighters.
The little guys don't get much coverage, it's a pity when you see guy's like Gonzales now
on prime time TV, I can't wait to see him fight again.:)
Won 3 titles away from his own country, 2 in Japan. That is a mark of a very good fighter!
It was the first time I had seen him fight the other week, he does look pretty good doesn't he.
Nice fast offensive accurate puncher with what looks like genuine KO power, it is a shame that the little fellas don't get anywhere near as much coverage as they should, I've seen some great scraps in the lighter weights but they are always overlooked.
Problem is he doesn't have a deep division to shine in. He is very good but not a lot to demonstrate on. He has fought a lot of gimme's in his home country. The lower weight classes have always been fun to watch it just doesn't appeal to mainstream fans, they think of them like watching minor leagues or canadian football.
Class. He seems a world apart from a lot of other fighters. He can box, he can spark you out, he can slip and use his feet to make you miss. Hopefully he will get a bit more mainstream coverage, and some big money fights to at least earn himself a decent retirement pot. So many talented people end up scraping by in a world dominated by mediocre celebrities, often with little or no talent in their chosen field, if they even have one.
His purse was $200,000 for the last fight.
It's a tough choice for someone like him. Stay in the division and hear nothing but crickets coming from potential opponents..... or scale the divisions and risk facing much bigger men with more power and more chin. I wish him all the success in the world.
Agreed. I'm not sure what people are talking about when they say things like to bad he's in such a noncompetitive unseen division. Its one of the most if not thee most competitive weight areas in boxing. Its not watched because the western world is sold on bigger is better and the combatants higher up resemble our own size structure generally.
He's every bit as good as Lopez was and Ricardo suffered exposure and money wise compared to everyone else also. Trouble for these little guys is that many are within a few pounds of what they walk around at on fight night and not fighting 2 or 3 divisions south of their in shape walk around weight. They cant just step up over a variety of reasons. A guy like Gonzalez might have to add mass and if he did, would he be the same fighter? 115 might be his ceiling if he cant get more at Fly and its there where he will start running into guys that are bigger then their weight. Rock and a hard place.
If you liked his last fight watch this. Estrada gave him a hell of a fight and the rematch is the biggest fight that can be made at that weight. OK, maybe that Japanese Monster guy whateverhisnameis but a rematch of this would be a guaranteed FOTY candidate.
