Hold the phone, are you saying Frankie Gavin isn't world level?
I joke but Jo Jo Dan was his mandatory so you can blame that on the IBF. Having seen what Carson Jones did to him by being relentless, Rios would be an interesting challenge and a test of Brook's chin, stamina and punching power. Frankie Gavin is a terrible opponent who does nothing for him and is just Hearn cashing in on a house fight.
If your plan is to fight regular then Rios is a bloody good opponent. Who else is there?
Floyd/Pac not an option.
Khan bottled it.
Thurman/Bradley not an option (have fights lined up)
Marquez don't know what he's doing.
Maidana?
It is an ok defence considering he fought Manny Pac and come from a good victory.
Brook may stop Rios and that would be even more impressive.
Yeah I think we're being too harsh on Brook. I've seen worse defenses by far. I think we're all anxious to have him face elite competition, though. What's the holdup with facing Khan again?
Damn shame.
It would seem to be a wonderful opportunity to have a fight with mega appeal for UK bragging rights.
Shouldn't they fight each other for the right to face Floyd?
I'd rather he was fighting someone better, I don't know why they're even talking about this until he beats Gavin. It's not all Brook or Hearn for that matter's fault, because most decent guys at this level are otherwise occupied.
This division needs a super 6 or 8 competition where there's no choice but to put the best fights on.
I see Khan's point. He's won 2 world titles and beaten some top guys. Brook has beaten Shawn Porter. Apart from that he hasn't proved himself yet while Khan has fought and beaten some top names and was at one point the top guy at 140. From his point of view he makes more money per fight than Brook, he is more mainstream than Brook and his win record is more reputable. He's chased Floyd for a long time and feels he should have his shot. Brook hasn't really earned it. If they fought, I think Brook takes him, and I think Khan knows there is a distinct possibility of that so why risk it when he is so close to his big money fight with Floyd? I think if Floyd and Manny retire, he will fight Brook.
To me Rios isn't even top 10 at WW. But if being busy against worthless opponents is good enough for you all have at it I suppose. I just wondered if it was good enough for you all. Froch won me over, I think Brook is more talented, but with weak opponents like they are lining up(and frankly his entire career is littered with mediocre opposition compared to his talent) I won't be getting on board with Brook. I'll stop asking that he step up as it seems his fans are happy with being an ABC title holder. If I was a fan I would be highly highly highly disappointed, but I'm not so why should I root for him to try for greatness?
You make some fair points, but bearing in mind a. The fight isn't done yet. And b. Who is available?
Who would you have matched him with.
I can't say it's a good matchup, but then again neither is Thurman v Collazo or Khan v Algieri.
The fact is that until Floyd and Pac are gone, this is what we have to put up with.
Name who he should be fighting in August then?
I guess I just can't see anyone as being worse. Rios was a good lightweight, not great. And his style and abilities favored him there where he was big. Now he doesn't have size so his lack of craft and concussive power means all he can do is make a guy work hard beating him up. I'm not sure who he should fight but he hasn't even fought Gavin yet so what is the rush? In a month many more guys will be available, far better guys than Rios. I just see Brook and Thurman as the future(along with TC and Spence) and both seem to be hurting their careers more than helping them.
If he will wait a month the list of possible opponents is huge. Right now, before he's even had this soft touch, there is no reason to line up another soft touch.
To clarify between the top 10 of 154, 147, and 140 only 6 guys are tied up. And if he waited only 1 month only Thurman and Herrera would be tied up. Only 2 more weeks and not one fighter from the top 10 of 154, 147, and 140 would be tied up. Guys not being available is only an excuse if you rush. If you actually want big fights you aren't busy, you are looking for big fights.
He should scrap this date (which isn't even official) to wait and see what everyone else does?
Name the fighters that he could face in September then?
see my edit of the previous, literally every fighter is available. Every single fighter
Name who you want him to fight?
How many times do I have to say "anyone", Rios isn't good. He will make Brook work beating Rios up but at no point will he offer any qualities to trouble Brooke. If I want to watch Brook beat someone up I can watch his sparring. I want to see Brook against a good fighter. Rios is not a good welterweight. Pick Bradley, try Khan again after he doesn't get the Mayweather fight, he'll try for a Mayweather fight, fight Broner if Broner were to beat Porter, maybe Garcia is finally coming up, Ali, literally anyone in the top 10 is better than Rios and a few not in the top 10 at least offer some troubles. Rios is just a punching bag. The Gavin fight is more interesting than Rios.
How do you know that those guys will be willing to face Brook?
We know Khan isn't.
Broner needs a catchweight with Porter, certain Brook couldn't agree to that. Will Broner be prepared to travel to England? Same goes for Bradley and Garcia - would Bradley be prepared to play second fiddle at this stage of his career? Is Garcia moving up? These guys have been on 7-figure purses, they wont be taking a paycut. Lots of intangibles.
Why are they not making the fight then? That Rios fight is far from done and besides, he's a new champ and has a right to milk it a bit just like all those other clams do. Gavin is his optional because he just beat Jojo who was his mandatory and Kell took him anyway. That freed up Gavin as an optional. After Gavin his mandatory will be Khan. So if Khan remains delusional about getting the Floyd fight and decides not to execute that right then that would make Gavin his mandatory which I'm assuming he will have already beat thereby giving Brook another optional hence Rios. Thurman has Collazo up. Are they ever going to give him a prime welter?
Yes, so you don't rush. Those same intangibles will be there in August if they insist on rushing.
I don't know that any are willing, but they should try. I don't wish to see good fighters waste away.
And these conditions are fluid. Khan isn't avoiding Brook because he's scared, he's avoiding because he doesn't want to risk losing something bigger. If Floyd agreed to fight Garcia suddenly a fight with Brook makes sense for Khan. Floyd will be discussing opponents with Showtime in less than a week. Broner needs a catch weight for Porter because Porter offers him nothing other than a payday. Brook has a title to offer. So Brook doesn't have to bend over for Broner. Bradley has never been afraid to fight. Maybe he can get a big fight, maybe he can't but he should try.
It's whatever though, maybe they think this is his level. I just happen to think he's better than his career has shown.
I'm not happy with Thurman either. I'm not even saying there is a big fight available. I'm just saying they should try. Don't be confused the Rios fight is very near done. I told you folks it was happening over a month ago. Now they are admitting they have a date booked. A date contingent on a fight. It is very near done.
I really don't understand fans anymore. All anyone wants to argue is why nobody should fight anyone good, like ever.
It's not arguing about why they should fight anyone good. I agree that I don't see the need to fight in August, but I don't think there'll be any better options in September.
Garcia is a LWW
Broner won't be available and is a LWW
Thurman is doing no differently to Brook
Khan doesn't want any of Brook or any boxer who can dig.
Bradley , the last I heard he was talking of going to LMW. Even if he stays at WW, would he come to England?
Marquez is doing a bit of a Froch at the minute..... Will he won't he?
I said before, the only way these guys are getting in the ring with each other is with a super 6 style comp.
Seems like you need to take your own advice, Ron. Don't rush, have a little patience. Believe it or not boxing is a business. Fighter's are trying to make money.
Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn has mentioned Rios as a possible opponent for months, it's been no secret. It sells on both sides of the pond - which is all that matters in this game.
Be great if us fans could make the fights. Poor old Floyd certainly wouldn't be rolling around in hundreds of millions though, poor fucker would be eating through a straw.
Not thrilled, mainly because I'm tired of seeing Rios. I'd rather see him fight Guerrero before that.
I'm happy with it, cracking fight
This fight is a formality and a showcase fight for casual fans to see Brook
Looking at the fight itself I think it should be entertaining. How would you Brits feel if Rios actually won.
Its a fair matchup, Rios has shown his limitations, but he is sturdy and comes to fight. It's hardly Mayweather/Baldomir matchup bad.
Baldomir was the WBC champ at 147. He had just beat Zab Judah to win that belt and had defended it by KOing Arturo Gatti in 9 rounds.
Floyd had just moved up from 140 and had won the IBF's 147 title by beating Zab in his most recent fight. Floyd has always been a WBC fighter so of course he would fight Baldomir for it.
Don't try to discredit Floyd for fighting Baldomir, he did it for the title. He had just beat Zab (who was the previous WBC belt holder), so Mayweather would have had the strap had Zab not lost to Baldomir... And the previous WBC title holder was Cory Spinx who Mayweather would have beat easy. So no bullshit Miles. Mayweather fought Baldomir for the title.
Now what has Rios done in his career aside from showing he can get the shit beat out of himself by little 135 & 140 pounders all the while failing to make weight in 2 or his 3 title fights?!
Rios' poorly trained chubby little ass is going to get beat by Brook and badly! He's only moved up in weight because too lazy to train and has happily embraced his role as "tough gatekeeper who is easy to beat".
Oh come on now, Baldomir was a gimme and based on one of Zabs many off nights. It was a feeble matchup.
Floyd had just moved up in weight and was challenging the current champion for his WBC title.
I suppose you'd have waited until a better fighter fought Baldomir, beat him, and then challenge that fighter for the WBC title instead? @Gandalf
Give me a break Richey! You can surely see the difference between a lucky easy fight for a title versus choosing a ridiculous mismatch as an optional title defense.
Floyd fought Baldomir because he was offered a career high payday - $8million - which was the same amount he was refusing to fight Margarito for.
Why fight a dangerous opponent for the same money you make against an easier one? Business. Simple.
