Dude has had the belt for a year and still hasn't fought at middleweight! What a pussy!
Darren Barker , Daniel Geale , both are far worse than Cotto , at least Cotto is a boxing warrior.
hahahahahahahaha funny shit, there's a long list of fighters who are far ahead of him
There have been worse champions and Cotto has beaten the champion and stopped a former champion which is better than a lot of other champions at the weight have ever done.
Apart from Violent Demise I fail to understand why anyone doesn't like Cotto , he has always been entertaining win lose or draw.
and has consistently fought the best, he himself admitted that he's not a real middleweight and beat up a guy who was about 15 lbs bigger than him last night like if he was a punk, openly said Canelo is his next fight and that fight will probably be at Jr. Middleweight, he picked up the middleweight title for history, unlike other fighters he's always given the fans what they want and the fights that they want, some just get pissy if they don't get it right away but well those are the ones that only tuned in to watch May vs Pac :-X:-\
Only guy at 160 who beats Cotto at this point is GGG, so I don't think he is a bad champ at all. Many other fighters who in my opinion were worse. He ISu undersized for that weight though. Freddie has him looking good right now, but part of me still feels that it is more matchmaking than Cotto ring rejuvenated. I'm a big Cotto fan though, guy has fight wars and been in with the best available. Like Pac, I just don't understand what's not to like about him.
I quite like Cotto, but I don't like this bullshit with unnecessary catch weights. It's not just him, I respect Mayweather, but he shouldn't have LMW Straps.
Basically , if you want to call yourself champ in that division fight at that division.......or give up the title.
To be honest, the blame probably lies with the governing bodies for allowing it to happen.
Boxing Warrior ? ;D The guy is a prima donna. First he picks a fight with a disabled pensioner with dodgier knees than Mary Millington, and then he asks Geale to chop one of his limbs off, before he is willing to give him a shot at the middleweight title. He admits openly that he has no interest in ever respecting the rules of boxing, and then after virtually filling his shorts at the mention of Golovkin, he makes it quite clear that his next fight as middle weight champ, will again not be against a middle weight, because he has no interest in fighting anyone at middle weight.
What a warrior. :-\
I'll be totally straight. I liked Cotto. His cred has been established long ago. But I've lost bookoo respect for him and frankly while he may be more skilled than tons of guys claiming a middle strap..he doesn't measure up to any of them in the bigger picture. Because..you have to BE a middleweight and honor the range as well as your opposition to even be considered. Cotto is an imposter and is being allowed to lie to the fans. Its a farce and a con job. He should vacate the title today and stop acting like a brat.
You don't have to weigh 160 to be a middle; it is 'up to' 160. Ray Robinson was 151, I believe, when he won it the first time. Henry Armstrong was in the 140s when he challenged for it, and he won the 147 title at 136.
Telling a guy to weigh 157 to fight for the title is probably wrong. But Geale didn't have to agree to it and he could have handled his weight differently once he did. If I was managing Cotto, I would honor the 160 limit but every contract would enforce a rehydration limit of 165.
A guy weighing 160 for one minute the day before the fight and the getting in the ring at 172 or more is the real insult to the sport.
You're right. And that's why it's such a shame that he is undoing all the good work he did in the rest of his career. If he wants to come in light , fine, but a world title fight should allow a fighter to come in any weight up to the limit.
It's another example of money being more of a priority than the reputation and integrity of the sport.
Cotto beat Martinez for the middle weight title
Only 2 fights before the majority on this forum had Martinez lb4lb best in the world behind only the bell end
The rehydration as a whole is off the chart today with guys putting on anywhere from 10 to 21 lbs in many cases. But Geale had no obligation to be reweighed...and Cotto would not even get back on the scale so his at the bell weight was not known. Cotto double dipped, taking the limit off the top..no 160..and he didn't even come in at minimum 154 himself. To me, he lost the legitimacy of lineal middle as he will even defend there. I do believe Robinson was above minimum for 1st middle strap with Lamotta and had no stipulations, he was outweighed in all of there fights up to the point of 15 lbs once if I'm not mistaken? The thing with Robinson was he knew and acted like he was indeed that much better in that series. No shenanigans or gimmicks..lets just have a fight!
Martinez' injuries and surgeries were well known after the Murray fight even as far back as the Chavez Jr fight. Here's an article:
Injuries will likely keep Sergio Martinez from fighting for rest of 2013
This was explored in detail during the Cotto v Martinez 24/7 episodes before the fight.
Roach and Cotto even tried to prevent Martinez from being able to wear a soft supportive knee brace into the ring for the fight. They CLEARLY knew they were fighting damaged goods as did anyone paying attention to the lead up to the fight.
So don't give me the "he beat THE MAN" crap. He beat A man with one leg...
Still the man and hindsight is 20/20.
Why did Martinez take the fight, then?
I read your post that to mean you deny that Martinez had injuries and surgeries and that you dispute that it was common knowledge that he was in less than perfect condition for the year or two leading up to the Cotto fight...
He took the fight for money because he made peanuts in the sport and needed a payday or two before leaving. Let's not confuse that with him still being "THE MAN".
My biggest concern for cotto is when he gets beaten up he really gets beaten up.
Cotto is still very popular even after all these losses he has shown a great boxing iq and his bodywork combinations are impressive.
He will never beat floyd but a rematch against pac at cottos weight would be interesting but with freddie managing the two it will never happen.
Cotto fought 4 rounds against a guy that came in flat after being weight drained with a catch weight...after a year off and holding the strap hostage..but he needs a vacation now before he will fight Canelo?:mad: to my knowledge he wasn't even injured, just contract hunting.. Pfft.
Go back farther and many said he was done after Pac man.
Apparently some of us don't want to take the reality pill. Not U, just saying....
However:
Catch weights are (now) apart of our sport. One would have to be an ass out hypocrite to call Cotto on requesting a certain weight and not Floyd or Pac.
To be Angry at him for a MW title, then so, too should we be for Pac making history fighting for a JMW belt he never earned not defended.
And that Martinez excuse is really imo is pussified.
20 years ago fighters commonly fought with injuries...and never cried, bitched or moaned to the media outlets of their day about it.
Frazier fought with a bad retina, Pryor did too. Julian Jackson fought McClellan II with an injured vertebrae and a detached retina...but we didn'thear those warriors bitch and moan about it. SIx days before Holmes vs Norton, Holmes tore a tendon in his bicep, yet he scrapped like an alley dog trying to get to fuck the neighborhood bitch in heat.
Because of that .......fans never defended their losing fighter with injury excuses.
Martinez got his ass whooped by Cotto, point blank or he should have stayed his injured butt in hospice care.
Cotto= warrior.
And now the old dog wants Canelo?
Cotto=warrior.
Eh he wont even fight the man guy at the weight now so i don't know GGG getting the Hagler treatment. Now with this next fight and god knows how long it will be till GGG can get a shot at Lineal title. I mean not like GGG not been fighting every mw he can just sucks for the guy really.
Cotto = Warrior ? *
* See footnote #
# as in prima donna - as in check the really small print @
@ Warrior - Small Puerto Rican Guy, likes to wear gaudy pink shorts and circa 1992 tribal tattoos. Used to moan about being made to drop below a divisional weight by opponents and now does exactly the same thing while avoiding the man to beat in the division, and yet holding onto the belt, less his colourful shorts fall down
Cotto isn't a middleweight. He's using his titles to his advantage in negotiating with Canelo et al. He's a middleweight champion in title only.
LOL at the hate being poured on Cotto who just dispatched Geale with amazing ease.
Again... I'm not a catchweight fan either. But haters act like Cotto invented the catchweight, FFS. Hate is a funny thing. It skews the thinking of otherwise sane and logical people. All of a sudden Cotto is a "ducker".... is not a warrior (when he's always been known as one prior to).... and pretty much is the devil incarnate. Wow.... ;D
As has been said by various posters, Cotto saw an opportunity to take the MW title and become the first Puerto Rican (not Porto Rican, @Greenbeanz ) fighter to win titles in four different weight divisions. Martinez offered that opportunity. No one is arguing that Martinez was 100%.... but at the same time, no one put a gun to Martinez's head to take the fight.... and he was cleared by the responsible authorities. The punches that put Martinez down multiple times in the first round were not landed on the knee, contrary to popular belief. Amazingly enough, they were landed to the head and body. Martinez, as everyone else, was taken by surprise by Cotto's aggressive attack from the get-go. Rather than a feeling out round, Cotto went out for blood. Would a healthier Martinez prevailed against that Cotto? Who knows? Personally, I think the overconfidence would've still led to his demise.
Had the same opportunity be offered to another fighter.... would have he been as criticized for taking it as Cotto has been criticized? I'd like to think so. Otherwise, it's just hate.
Now Cotto is the "worst MW champion ever" after only 2 fights in the division? LOL..... what a crock. But the thread author is Rocco, so no surprise there. This is a guy who froths at the mouth just talking about Pac and his PED use, mentioning it 47 straight times in a single thread. So hate is nothing new to our friend.
Cotto is not a true MW. I know this..... Cotto knows this..... pretty much everybody knows this. Chances are he will NOT fight GGG. Someone posted that Cotto is fighting guys that are bigger than him, and why doesn't GGG do the same. I like GGG, but I have to agree on that one. For Golovkin to emulate Cotto, he'd have to call out Ward and ask him to come down a few pounds. That would be a much better test of GGG's quality as a fighter.
Cotto is a prima donna and wants everything his way? Wow... what a revelation! First fighter to have traversed the career Cotto has, and then demanded things be done his way. No one else has ever done that. Not Floyd.... not RJJ..... not DLH..... nobody. Cotto is the first.... the one and only. No wonder the haters hate. :rolleyes:
Cotto is holding up the MW division. Yeah... because his is the only title that exists in the MW division, as opposed to all the other weight divisions that have a handful of titles. But it's Cotto, so the division is now paralyzed. Man.... this stuff is funny. ;D The guy doesn't realize the power he has over boxing.
Good stuff.
Blah Blah BLAH....
Cotto took the title from a cripple.
FACT.
Cotto hasn't fought a middleweight fight since and it's been a year since he won the title.
FACT.
Well hey, they must be facts... seeing as to how you used the size 20 font.
Do people actually know you could fight at MW and be 10 stone 6 lbs . 160LBS is the limit. If his challengers want to come in at 160lbs then don't sign a stupid contract agreeing to be less.
