Andre Ward - Paul Smith
http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/ward...19#more-295019
This is the final press conference and as we all know its an uphill task for Smith. Its good that we can see Ward back in the ring and may this be the start of him being a lot more active. I think he might go back to 168, there are still fights for him there.
Do we see Smith hearing the final bell in this one?

Smith shocks the world on a split points win.
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
No reason whatsoever to think this will be competitive.

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
if smith wins it will be the second greatest moment in world boxing history (only behind bruno winning the world title obviously)
nobody would be talking about honeygan curry anymore, it would be smith ward, the greatest performance on american soil by a british fighter

Agreed. If theres ever a time for Smith to do it, its right now with Wards inactivity. But it wont happen though.

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Major mismatch I think no way it goes 12
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Ward has been inactive for long stretches before, if anything taking on Paul Smith at a catchweight was being prepared for the worst case scenario. He's still a young guy and he looks good in the gym from what I saw, it would be shocking to me if there was one close round in this thing, total mismatch.
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Paul has absolutely no pressure whatsoever and a nice cheque to pay off his house. Ward is going to have ring rust and maybe significant ring rust with all the pressure in the world placed squarely on him. His chin could easily get checked by punches Smith would never get in had Ward stayed active.

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Paul Smith isn't known for being very good though, I think Ward can/will stop him if he wants to. Groves flattened him easily, I didn't see the DeGale fight but he was stopped in that as well, Ward is better than those guys and he can punch enough.
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Smith has been very fortunate to get these opportunities because he really is not at that level based on his stoppages from Groves and De Gale. AA nearly stopped him in his last fight and if ward is on his game he should do the same. I hope Smith gives a good account of himself.
-
I just hope Ward gets back to fighting top guys after this fight to knock the rust off. He's one of the few guys that has a track record of fighting the best. Not talking about it, doing it.

True but when u fight someone who's not on your level you start getting more aggressive and try to punish your opponent. Ref stops the fight after 6th that's my prediction
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
The Groves loss is not really that relevant - anyone can get chinned by a great shot - but the DeGale stoppage for Smith was a mercy one after getting whooped for round after round. Be surprised if Ward can't emulate that, especially with the 172 catchweight advantage.
Under 10.5 rounds/Fight not to go distance

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Andre Ward showed what a prima donna diva he is by demanding the catch-weight against a guy who has been fighting at super-middleweight.
It wasn't enough that Smith lost his past two fights, and was easily KOed by Groves. It wasn't enough that the fight is in Ward's home country and home town, and no doubt he'll have either his personal referee Jack Reiss or another California Boxing Commission referee to permit him to foul. But diva Ward also demanded the smaller Smith fight him at a catch weight of 172!
If Ward wanted to test how he'd feel at a higher weight, he should have warmed up against a real light heavyweight at 175, someone not too dangerous (on Smith's level). Demanding a super middleweight go up four pounds to fight him is pathetic.
-
The Ward team refused to meet Dawson at 170 and insisted on 168. Now he wants a guy who started as a light middleweight to meet him at 172? I would not be surprised if they insisted on a similar ridiculous clause if Golovkin moved up. S.O.G ? Sonnofabitch more like.

Paul Smith will give it a go but I think there is only one winner Ward, will Ward beat the crusher Kov

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
I like the Smith fight for a comeback, also gives Ward some visibility in UK

Smith didn't make the catchweight, he didn't even make light heavyweight, he came in at 176.4!! WTF?!

Total fucking disgrace. He knew he had no chance and he knew Ward couldn't afford to pull out. It stinks. He needs fining big time and suspending because it's unprofessional

I'd like to see how the contract was written. Catchweights are designed as a max as a rule. Smith as far as I know could have came in at 168 if he wanted to. He never had to make 172 but could not go over. As it turns out he did by close to 5 pounds. Unless he has been having serious issues making 168, I dont see how this benefits him so I think he must feel stronger. He's most likely going to get a fine and perhaps its his final fight so he wanted to take his best shot. Nice to see Ward get a bad card dealt. Its a non issue since Ward said he was thinking on going to 75 right after the S6.

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
It only takes one punch, and Smih is not a featherfist.
Remembering his pedigree, I'd say it is possible but unlikely he'll win but everyone thought AA would blast him out in a couple rounds, yet I had him winnig the first fight.

No, he just hasnt trained. Hes here for a pension. Take a look at the weigh in photos. He looks like a white collar boxer. Not someone in the biggest opportunity of his life against one of the best boxers in the world.

Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
It doesn't make any sense. Smith has already been fined a quarter of his purse and possibly more to come. With deductions he'll end up fighting for nowt. Some pension.

I won't. Ward does not have concussive knockout power. He'll probably be too bothered it it doesn't come, Andre needs rounds. No convinced Smith has no ambition, I think he thinks more weight behind his punches give him a better chance of a KO.
-
Re: Andre Ward - Paul Smith
Was listening to an interview with Joe Gallagher where he said - "it gives me a chance to pit my wits against Virgil Hunter"
So the gameplan was to not train. Brilliant.
-
Smith doesn't look happy, seriously looks like he doesn't want to be there and now the situation is worse because he's lost a slice of his purse.
100-1 for Smith in any round at a few bookies 😉
