I was actually thinking about my top 5 today I'll post my picks soon but just wanted to say i don't agree with most top 5/10 all times list just because a lot of these great boxers ended up fighting too long past there prime and took some bad beatings to shit opposition. I really believe if you decide to fight on past your prime you need to take the good with the bad. For example Roy Jones was one of the best in his prime but ended up shit cause he went on too long, I personally count all fighters wins loses prime or not and for that reason fighters like Roy Jones would never make any of my lists for that reason.
Favorites? Hell... why didn't you say so.
1. Trinidad
2. Wilfredo Gomez
3. Wilfredo Benitez
4. Alexis Arguello
5. Sugar Ray Leonard
Damn! Five is so limiting.....
Tyson
Chavez
Norris
Herol Graham
McCallum
That was very hard and I left out so many!!!!
It was hard for me to leave out JCC, Norris and McCallum off of my list. The 80s/90s were such great decades for boxing. Other than GGG and Crawford, what "newer" pro fighters have that skill and toughness combination???? As solid as Danny Garcia is, would he have even picked up a title in those days????
I think the plethora of trinkets has been there for the picking for the longest and Garcia and 100 others might get in. Its more an indictment on the availability and bs with belts than level of competition in respected division for a lot of guys today. Then again if the current Garcia jumped to welter say against Ike Quartey I'd fear for his life.
Holyfield
Hopkins
Carbajal
Benn
Saad
Five is not enough ;D
5 Chagaev
4 Hopkins
3 Povetkin
2 Wladimir
1 Vitali

Floyd has got everyone at it. And Floyd's picks ain't that nuts compared to some.

There is a big difference between your favourite top 5 fighters and who you think are the best top fighters ever.
There's obvious era bias in these lists too.
Seems like most people in their late 30s/40s will pick either Duran or Leonard or both. I bet in 20 years time Floyd will get a much more favourable mention.
frank Bruno
Nigel Benn
Chris Eubank
Ricky Hatton
Carl Thompson
it issssssnnnnnnnnnnt
anyway, SRL for instance was obviously a very good fighter and entertaining and all that but as far as i remember i never watched him fight as it happened
how can you have a fighter in your top 5 who youve never experienced in an as-it-happens situation?
theres the excitement of the build up and anticipation and all that, ring walk not know what to expect, personalities, knowing his record inside out, whos he gonna fight next, wheres he gonna end up
going back watching fights isnt the same
i can see SRL was unbeaten until a certain point but thats all i know, i dont know anything about the journeymen he fought or when he stepped up
really all i know about SRL is his big fights and ive gone back watching them knowing the result
Did you mean Robinson? I thought you was about 40?
Oh right. Too young to appreciate Leonard-Duran/Hearns 1 but I can remember being excited - and the build up - for the fights from the mid eighties. I can remember the ITV/BBC midweek sports shows and whatnot hyping them.
I think I still have VHS tape's of Duran-Leonard etc that you could buy back then.
Tyson came along when the fab four were still fighting.
Remember Tyson's fights being on ITV on Sat/Sun mornings/afternoon. I was sitting in a snooker club, eating a steak and kidney pie, when I saw Tyson iron out Larry Holmes.
youre right fenners - they were active
its a fact
i dont really remember them fellas live anyway
but i do remember tyson v holmes, i definately watched that, if not live then definately fresh around the time it happened
I definately watched more than one tyson fight before the berbick fight but i dont really remember which ones i watched live and which ones i have only gone back to since
know what i mean? my memory is being watered down with my minds attempts to build a new history in my life events
The fab 4 were not facing one another after 1986, discounting the crap fights after, it was the early 80's when they were at their best.
The late 80's were Tyson years and the first fight they showed of his was against Frazier when I became a fan.
No one has pac in their list...mmmm.
Wonder why?
If we are taking active fighters, Manny is definitely on my list, along with Cotto, GGG, Floyd and Crawford. Special fighters.
Aaron Pryor
SRL
Rocky Marciano
George Foreman
Roberto Duran
I seem to remember watching Leonard hagler live ish but that could also be my mind playing tricks on me
Hagler Vs Hearns was the first fight I saw. Made me a fan for life and I can vividly remember being terrified by the way they were staring at each other. It's why I hold it against Floyd for not closing the show or pressing during his fight vs Manny. That was an opportunity to save the sport, repay the sport/fans, and he made it a track meet. Turned off so many potential fans for the future. Hope his next ppv suffers and he is marginalized for it.
Ok I'm just going to pick my 5 favourite fighters not who I think are the 5 best of all-time
1.M. Hagler
2.J. Kid Berg
3.R. Duran
4.N. Benn
5.J. Louis
