Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
I had no idea, he's basically going around beating up domestic level fighters. I think he's got 3 fights within 2 months coming up, already booked in.
While he's doing that he is also calling people out and saying he will be world champ again!
Not even sure what to say. Feel chuffed for the 42 year old Liverpool lad he's fighting, but sad for Roy.

The next fight is also a title fight!

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
I really hate it when ATGs like Jones ruin their legacy like this.
At his best he was an unbelievably good fighter and one of the best who ever set foot in the ring, but over the last few years he's made a fool of himself.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
It's been a very ending for possibly the greatest boxing talent of all time. To think that the back-to-back KO losses were 11 years ago... and to think that he was talking about retiring 12 or 13 years ago... and here he is still plugging away.
There seem to be very few happy endings in boxing.

You can say that about 85% of all ATGs. Difference is, Roy is fresh in people's minds.
You would have bet half your life savings that Ray Leonard would have quit fighting after getting pummeled by Terry Norris....only to come back SIX years later..

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Its a bit like watching a world series pitching ace grow older and relive the glory days by blowing out single A baseball teams who never made the big leagues. Having 3 set ups already on deck reminds me of Foreman's Toranto Five.

Roy Jones Jr. loves boxing. He loves being in the ring and showing his skills even if those skills have diminished.
You nimrods who say he's ruining his reputation by continuing to do what he loves clearly don't understand true passion.
He's fighting for himself. Not for you. He's fighting because he wants to push himself even tho he's old, even tho he's nowhere near the skill level he once was, even tho he's fighting guys he should be able to blow out. He's doing it because it make him happy. That's reason enough to do anything and I feel sorry for you douchebags who don't get it.
How many of you will work at the jobs you hate until you're 65 - 70 years old?!!? How many of you will be that senior citizen in the McDonald's commercial working a part time job because you have to--because you have no choice?

He is still farting. I suggested him to retire in response to his FB post

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Jones is like Duran/Holmes was way past the point where it hurts his legacy. Everything positive he does is a bonus and if he loses, well that is expected.

I almost quoted this just on the strength of you using the word Nimrods, made me chuckle.
Yes Roy's legacy is intact for anyone that has half a clue.
I've got no problem with him doing what he wants to do with his life. The problem is, what he wants to do is voluntarily get punched in the head.
Yes he's fighting at a level that he can cope with, where the risk is somewhat lessened. But all that needs to happen is for one of these guys get lucky, or for them to gauge the opponent wrong and he's facing another Lebedev experience. No one wants to see that.

I feel the same way. If he somehow beat Huck or another titlist then it's a bonus.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Agree with Rocco as well, let him do what he wants it's not that sad. He's fighting in places he hasn't fought before to get the same rush he used to, people still come out excited to see him perform and he still looks very good to your average person, and against your average person lol. I don't think any of the guys he's fought recently are even capable of giving him another Lebedev experience, but if he does seriously keep talking about fighting Huck then of course that's a likelihood not just a possibility.

It would be amazing but Roy would be stupid and continue to fight.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
I think he's fighting for the money rather than for fun or to cement his legacy. All pro fights though, so maybe he's got a certain amount of wins he wants to get to

Sanest post here and yes..... exactly.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Mike Oliver and out of retirement Jason Litzau on undercard? A farewell tour threesome this one.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Initially I thought he was broke: but had to research b4 I made the claim. Not sure how -but dude is considered one of the richest boxers today. Not overall (Tyson) isn't on the several lists I checked b4 replying here.
So many athletes don't know when to walk away- so going on- isn't always a good thing. Roy has a belly. Hell, what happened to the superman physique? Saw the video posted of him vs Vasquez KO1, wow, Roy is showboating against him?
Now I don't feel bad at all for the way Calzaghe busted up-then clowned him.
-
Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Stop the press: Two lists have Tyson listed. SO maybe the lists simply count what Roy made- and not what he (HAS).
-
Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Nice left hook KO by Jones.
-
Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
He's fighting Tony Moran in Liverpool soon. Got three mates on the undercard too.

I've heard Tony is one of the nicest guys you could meet, but also hard as nails! He's in his 40's, but good for him getting the fight.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Maybe we should start a "has-beens" still fighting thread -since so many ancient relics are still lacing up the gloves.
One thread in all.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
This is a good interview where Roy talks about training fighters.

Re: Roy Jones Junior is still fighting
Youre all talking him hurting his 'Legacy'. And in the same breath you are all saying he is one of the best to lace on a glove..
Seems to me he isn't hurting his legacy at all. People can tell the difference between the Roy who reached the pinnacle of boxing by winning the Heavyweight title..... and the Roy who went down hill instantly after that.
Roy mentally, subconsciously, retired after winning the Heavyweight title. He was never the same after that. His second career started the very next fight.

I'm not one to say that overstaying ones welcome in a sport they no longer dominate is like tainting their legacy, but I understand those who do say it.
It is possible that the best who put on gloves can hurt their reputation as a fighter who always showed in best shape, but stopped doing it as they got older. Hopkins is clearly the example. Old as he is- look at his body when he shows up.
Now look at a photo of Roy. Where is Roy's sixpack abs? Hopkins as old as he is- shows up to win because he trains to win.
Looking at Roy Jones the past five years- he shows up & that's it.
Being old doesn't mean one cant stay in shape, it means they have to work hard(er) to stay in shape- And Roy has hurt that aspect of his life. He clearly shows up in whatever shape he's in, I consider that fact by photo.
& Roy retiring mentally & subconsciously? after the HW title is an opinion to me and makes it seem like Tarver nor Johnson really beat him. He beat himself. It be nice to think Roy never really lost because he wasn't all there.
Roy lost because someone (Tarver & Johnson) beat him. The other guys...50/50,, can't say...

The word from the promotors of the Liverpool show is that Jones has pulled out because he's secured a World title shot.

I don't think he can. Unless its some half measure minor trinket. There is Drozd in Russia...where Roy just got his visa and "citizenship" :scratchchin:
