Change one event in boxing history.
If you were able to change one event in boxing history, which one would it be?
Personally, I'd prevent Salvador Sanchez's car crash.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I'm such a big Roy Jones fan I'd have had him retired after the 1st Tarver fight, like he was going to.
That's just a personal choice, obviously if I had the chance I would prevent a death like Salvador over letting RJJ retire with dignity.
-
Michael Watson getting caught by Eubank in the 12th round.

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Ali's religious conviction not to fight in Vietnam has no impact on his boxing career- giving us 1967-1970 worth of Ali fights.

I think if you do the crime, you do the time.
I don't see why religious convictions should get you special treatment...

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Herol Graham dancing and not getting caught on the ropes against Jackson. Graham would have been champion and go on to beat Benn and Eubanks becoming a household name and millionaire.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I would change racism so that throughout the beginning of boxing history, all races of fighters got a fair shot at the title.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I was going to say Ali's time off during what would have been his prime but, in second place, I'd let Meldrick Taylor survive those last 10 seconds against JCC.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Mike Tyson knocks out Buster Douglas so that Tyson-Holyfield is the biggest heavyweight title fight since Ali-Frazier I.
Or Tyson doesn't go to jail and fights Riddick Bowe
Or Margarito is not allowed to load his wraps vs Cotto

Box history & world history would have to be re-written.
Jack Dempsey, gone & the dude that America's Hollywood made in his image (Clark Gabel) wouldn't of been able.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I'd reinstate 'Brockton Block Buster' immediately.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Dempsey would've been whooped, but fights like Pep & Saddler would've been the same.
I think Benny Leonard would also have stayed atop the rankings.

Gable would have still been around...Dempsey might not, but he wouldn't be a bum. Sam Langford would be THE household name and he'd take shine off of Jack Johnson's star that's for certain.

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Mayweather-Pacqiou is a fight of the decade candidate.

It shows how much attention I pay to this, I never even knew. BBB, don't know what you did wrong, but hopefully see you soon.;)

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
This might be a bit of a cheat but I'd change the decision to destroy old film for the war effort in the states can you imagine what we might possibly still be able to view today
-
Oscar deciding to keep fighting as he did the first 9 rounds against Trinidad.
*awaits the inevitable defensive reply from Titofan* 5, 4, 3, 2,.......
-
Fanman never falling in the ring. Bowie would have very well retained that belt.
There may have been a Bowe/Lewis fight by late '94, early '95 with the winner fighting parolee Mike Tyson.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I'd reinstate same day weigh ins. The current system means we get light heavies today fighting at middle etc etc
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Cus Damato lives for another 10 years.

It would have been interesting, but I don't think it would have changed things that much. Tyson is a head case and he would have screwed Cus over at some point. Camille Ewald was his surrogate mother and only died a few years ago, but she didn't seem to have much influence on him.
Tyson doesn't know the meaning of loyalty and I say that as a fan! He likes to blame everyone else for his mistakes and the long history of bad behaviour, but the fact is he's not a very nice person.

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
How about Walcott not dropping his hands allowing Marciano to counter him and retire undefeated.

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Hagler gets the decision vs SRL.

You beat me to it. I'm a huge fan of Meldrick Taylor (and Chavez), and think he deserved to win that fight, even though I think his career after outlive ended up the same regardless. Taylor was too tough for his own good but I would've loved to have seen him at least have the memory and pride from winning that fight.
-
Re: Change one event in boxing history.
Bowie doesn't dump his belt in the trash and we get a owe vs Lewis for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Runner up is Ike Quartey and Tito Trinidad decide to fight each other instead of Oscar, who was the cash cow at the time. Both of those fights would've been classics.

I heard a couple of rogue MODS are keeping him out, something to do with a 'bombastic personality' plus his weight, whatever that means.
He might have to buy his way back in, whatever that means.

That's all a bit profound.???

Re: Change one event in boxing history.
I'd make it so Froch didn't get up from Groves first round bomb in Froch Groves 1.

Camile Ewald never had a say in Mikes career or probably had a clue what was going on. Cus made Mike and if he and Jim Jacobs had not died so early in Mikes career would King have really got a hold on Mike? I doubt it. King needed Mike to lose those influential people.

Dropping the Ban on Brockton-Block-Buster.
I push for immediate re-instatement.

You should have pushed for Ali's ban just as harder.

As profound as this thread???
