Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
Both are tough team sports with a funny shaped ball. Both sports are played by blokes that look like brick shithouses. Some are fat others lean and mean.
The hits are harder in American football but they are like robcop's with all the protective gear on.Its also very stop start with burst of action.
In rugby they are more carfull when they tackle coz if they dont they could break there necks. They have no protective gear apart from gumshealeds and in a few cases scrum caps.
Which do you think is the harder sport?

Re: Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
Football by far!
Yes America sucks at rugby, but Football requires more strategy and the forward pass is a good difference in the two sports

Why do they called it football?
More like hand ball.

Re: Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
I have played both (if you mean Rugby Union).... poorly ;)
American Football does have bigger single hits, but Rugby is more physically demanding, and takes a lot more out of you. To start of with there is no scrummaging, rucking or mauling in American Football. But I suppose there are less legal cheap shots in Rugby....
-
Re: Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
I would argue with you but I have no idea what "rucking" is and I don't know how you mean "mauling"....in football we don't (usually) bite people like dogs or anything but it does get pretty bad sometimes.
Yes football has the better athletes (barring most linemen but look at yall's fullbacks, about the same) and the bigger hits and therefore is harder to play because of such things. Rugby is to football what Cricket is to baseball...more boring and less skilled

Sorry mate...Amercian football has the better athletes? You are somking some pretty strong stuff. Rugby is a much more physically demanding game and you have to be much 'fitter' to play the game with any level of success.
I would say Rugby players are much more rounded athletes than American football players simply because the game is non stop physical exertion. American football relies on a bunch of fatass blockers (ala 'the fridge') and a guy who throws it to the one fit guy in the team (wide reciever) who then scores. Also its very start stop so no real sustained level of physical activity is required before the ref blows his whistle.

Rucking: When a player is tackled, and deemed to be on the floor, he must release the ball. But if he can turn his body to his own side, his team mates can run over him, and 'clear' the opposition, and a player can then come and pick the ball up and continue possesion. A player from opposing side must stay on his feet when a ruck is formed, and can only gain the ball himself, if comes from behind the foot of the furtest player directly behind the ball. If he fails to do this he is deemed offside and he is punished with a penalty.
Mauling: Is similar to rucking, but occurs when a player is tackled but stays on his feet. His team mates are entitled to push him forward by 'binding' on to him or a team mate, providing they 'bind on' by approaching the maul from the furthest player in a direct line with the ball. The opposition in turn is entitled to push the person with the ball, back by the same means.
I am sure that is as clear as mud ;D

yeah ive played both as well and would say Rugby is well the harder sport, American Football u don't have to be that fit and the big hits don't really hurt that much cause your padded from head to toe. when u get hit with a big tackle in Rugby it's like taking a huge body shot its not good, both are good to watch though i find American Football a bit to stop/starty

I agree rugby is a more demanding game, but its atheletes aren't as good... Money draws in the best athletes in the world. In football there are guys who are 230-250 pounds, and running faster than anyone in rugby and most of the soccer players out there. You should have seen Michael Vick's agility test going into the nfl he has like 4.27 40 yard dash, 450 bench press, 650 squat... He is an amazing athelete. Also they do hit alot harder in football because the pads allow for it, and these guys are bigger, stronger, faster so they hit harder as physics would demand. Anyways people that aren't linemen work their asses off in the off season, and I bet you Jerry Rice use to train harder than any Rugby player who's ever played... hell even boxers don't train anywhere near as hard as Jerry used to. He could run the 100 meter dash 5-6 times in consecutively. As for fatasses... there are some guys out there who are 300 pounds who run incredibly fast, its just they couldn't play straight at that speed. However there is Jevon Kearse who when he entered the NFL he ran the 40 in 4.35 seconds and he was 6-5, 270. This draft I saw 7 cornerbacks in the top 20 running the 40 in 4.35 or less, and 35+inch veritcal jump... there is no comparison who has the better atheletes because the NFL has basically olympic level athletes, but these are guys who could go into the olympics in 4-5 events... and do well in every event.

You haven't been hit hard in football... I've had days where my sides have been way more bruised than any boxing could ever make me. In college more people die from football than in boxing... granted alot of them are from dehydration, but alot of them are also guys who endure too many body hits because in no other sport do you get as much body punishment as in football(unless your a quaterback or running you usually don't get any body protection).

Because originally Football was more like rugby, and you could only kick the ball, and then it progressed into the current sport... The more confounding thing is why do we call soccer, soccer? Maybe football should be called soccer and soccer called football over here.

I would say the "athletes" as you call them in American football are very one dimensional and have less skills as they are so specialist.
I cant imagine some of those line of scrimage blokes being much good anywhere eles on the field. In rugby you got to be able to do it all to a certain extent.

Re: Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
Ive played rugby union(didnt even know most of the rules but hell i played it) and rugby league and i personally would say league is harder then union and american football. League is faster paced and you have huge blokes who can actually run hard and fast opposed to american football and union with big guys who are just plain big. Rugby union and league are much tougher sports then american football, think of it this way. Someone get hit in the head in american football....he has a head protection but if you get smashed in the head in union or league, theres a big chance of a neck injury (coz of the speed they run at) and get koed.
-
Re: Which is the harder sport,Rugby or American football? VOTE NOW!!!
league is a much quicker paced game compared 2 union, and union is quciker than NFL.
i personally think that the hits in union arent as hard as league, in union u will quite often c a player go in2 a tackle and go 2 the ground and position him self for the 'ruck', whereas in league they use forwards 2 break the defensive line or 2 tire the other player down.

Lockie.....i think these guys need to learn 3 words "Sonny Bill Williams"! This guy hammers anyone and not only that but he can run and pass. When people play against him....they look for him coz they dont want to get hammered!

Most US football players would struggle playing union but League would kill them off.

Mate if those fat ass nfl player played leauge they would need air tanks on the sideline. The difference between league and nfl is that nfl has defence and offense teams....league just has one team and you have to be fit to do both jobs and if youre a fats ass who weighs over 300 pounds then you will probably have a heart attack.

The offensive linemen couldn't play rugby for sure, but its not all that tiring... there is alot of points where rugby slows down alot... 8 on 8 though would be another story... There are guys in football though like linebackers/tight ends/ defensive ends who are 250+ pounds and have more agility and speed than 95% of the pro rugby players out there.

Thats funny because defensive ends that run faster than the fastest backs in rugby can't get by them... These guys can run the 100 in like 11 seconds and are 260-270 in football with a 30+inch vertical jump and can bench 225 20+ times would destroy most of the guys in rugby.

Taeth I think you need to meet prime Jonah Lomu... 280lbs, 6' 4" and able to do a 100 meters in 10.5 secs, in football boots, on grass, he had American Football teams wanking over him until he fucked his kidneys up. ;)

Loads of the NFL guys are Polynesian (American Samoans and Hawaiians) I reckon they have a lot in common with the New Zealand All Blacks

I was just going to bring Jonah into this debate. ;) That guy was a physical freak... seriously... I think there was something wrong with him genetically, haha. Until his kidneys brought him back to earth, he looked superhuman! His legs were like tree trunks! :o

As for 100m speed, the current fastest player over 100m in Rugby union is Tonderai Chavhanga, a Zimbabwean born South African. He has clocked 10.2 seconds over 100m and is the fastest Zimbabwean on record to date. There are a few other quick guys like Bryan Habana (10.4), Sosene Anesi (10.5), Brett Stapleton (10.33) and Joe Rokocoko (10.6)... then again, speed doesn't really make a sport 'hard'.

Thats the best athlete in Rugby arguably ever who could do it in 10.8 seconds as his one best run, and he was 250 at the time.... Jevon Kearse(6'5, 265) when he started in the NFL ran the 40 in 4.28 seconds, and could do the hundred meters in under 11 seconds as well. Michael Vick could run the hundred meters in under 10 seconds, and he was as strong as guys 50 pounds heavier than him in terms of weightlifting... There is more than one person more gifted than Jonah Lomu in the NFL.
