Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I think it would be better. That thing about avoiding injuries is a crock of bull and has never been proven. + let these modern day slackers earn their huge purses

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Absolutely, they should. It didn't do Marciano, SRR, SRL, or Duran any harm. These guys fight once or twice a year these days, so they should bank an extra half a dozen rounds for their money. Bad things seldom happen and if they do then they do. I don't see anyone getting all irate about cars or bees and yet boxing gets demonised and watered down because very occasionally bad things happen. It's a weight loss issue more than an extra few rounds of boxing issue.

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
im happy with 12
imagine an extra 3 rounds of mayweather

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I would go for it, I can't remember the days of 15 round fights, it would certainly make some fights a little more interesting.
for example, the Eubank JR v Billy Joe Saunders fight, how would that have gone if it was another 3 rounds? would BJS have let Eubank Jr into the fight after 6 rounds? would we have seen a knock out between the 13th/15th round because both of them were dog tired.
but at the same time they both fought a good hard fight and it was close as fuck at the end, if it went 15 rounds and one of them had a KO against them it could be seen as being a little unfair

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I've always said they need to bring 15 rounds back. There really is no reason we shouldn't have them. I would however, limit them to legit titles and not every strap that someone holds because there are definitely worthless fights I don't want to see go the extra 3 rounds.
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Those 3 extra rounds help the champion and why they are called the champions rounds. You beat the champion you earned it.
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I have always been a fan of the 15 rounders in the past.
But it is not going to happen, so the fight is to keep 12 rounders for as long as possible.

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Good idea for Green Card Lottery in Schengen Zone:
Have 15 ROUND Illegal Immigrant Boxing Matches in the Winter....winner gets free apartment in Bruxelles plus free pancake breakfast every Sunday in Bruges BWAAAHAHAHAHA

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
There's not much chance of 12 round fights being reduced at this current time because we now have far bigger boxing cards on far more TV channels. In Britain, long gone are the days of showing just the main event, the promoters/TV get slaughtered well in advance as we know everything that is planned.

I thought they may have thought it out and made them 13 rounders to avoid any draws.

So now they should go hard or go home.

I do not know if you remember, but the 'USBA' tried that in the late 80s:
Fight:43307 - BoxRec

The problem is the fighters finish and then wait maybe five minutes for a decision, and then mentally as well as physically have to get ready to fight another three minutes knowing they have to win the round...
Although good on paper, I can understand why it was just not practical in the end.

No thanks! When I want to see a couple of guys stumbling around trying to grab and hold, I'll watch another episode of 'The Walking Dead'.

It definitely would have had an impact on the DLH/Mosley fights
Taylor/Hopkins I and II
Taylor/Winky
Chavez/Meldrick Taylor

That's my point exactly! Do you want to see three more rounds of that crap? 15 rounders are not coming back. Some of use want a draw breaking extra round, fuck that noise, occasionally fights are draws. Live with it.

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I think so but the reason they were dropped still remains. Economics not safety and the overriding problem today would be the fact that 80% of the fighters today could not fight 15. Entire training regiments would have to be changed. Half of the elites today are gassed by round 6.

I wonder how much time is actually devoted to stamina/endurance/cardio training by the boxers of today.
Do they spend most of their time in the gym and do "a little running here and there" and underestimating its importance?

Good question for 'Ask the Trainer'. I suspect they try to get the cardio differently these days.

Interesting question because new gens always go on and on about science, technology, sports medicine, nutrition bla bla bla and the results show anything but advancement. In many ways its devolved. Its as if they train for highlight reels and 6 round fights. I doubt a plan B is ever mentioned.
Its a knockout or bust era. Boxers get ignored or labeled boring. Its asinine.
Instant gratification. Boxing has become an app on a tablet lol.

That's why at the age of 51 I could take half of their asses even today I am old school I would get in shape and take these young assholes asses

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Whether it is thirteen rounds to ensure a tie breaker or fifteen rounds to decisively show you are the best, knowing that distance is greater is an unwanted inspiration to come in,in shape because it shows that you truly earned the word champion. It is equality in competition. You know the rules and there is a lesser chance for controversy but then there will always be those that complicate matters and they have a name, pain in the ass.

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I've never bought into historical 12 rounders being too terribly altered if they were 15 as the fighters would adjust accordingly, earlier starts, second winds and timed rallies etc. Stamina trained accordingly and such. One big thing is fifteen rounds times out one hour perfect, no time for the always increasing network fluff and packaging. Think that had a lot to do with it.
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
15 rds is much more appealing, if its a draw after 12 rds then its a deserved draw and neither fighter deserves to lose, why force a loss on someone who didn't deserve it
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
They should go back to 45 rounds
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I think 15 rounds for Championships should be re-introduced. @Spicoli hit the nail on the head about the bout length and advertising; which is one reason we won't see them again.
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Your crazy if you think that could happen in today's society of safety and preservation...its more like down to 11. Always thought there should be an odd number of rounds to cut down on draws.
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
excellent point about draws----draws are BOGUS POMP

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?

Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
Definitely.
Top fighters fight so infrequently these days that 15 rounds should not be a problem for them.
-
Imagine huffy puffy puffy pudgy Taco Bell eating Facebook using young boxers trying to throw 100 punches a round for15 rounds like Rocky Marciano
-
Re: Should championship fights go back to 15 rounds?
I think they should Unification bouts particularly, or championship fights with more than one title on the line by either fighter/belt holder.

Frequency in the BOXING ring does nothing to enhance STAMINA.
