Don't people know what a joke is? At the core of many a joke there will be a target, someone the joke is aimed toward. Paul Gascoigne in this instance made a joke about a black man and in the PC Reich this is perceived as a criminal act whence the subsequent investigation.
Is this yet another example of language Nazism and the loss of free speech?

It is weird how that can potentially get you a criminal record. It was unlikely to have been malicious on Gascoigne's part. Should I call the police everytime someone points out that I don't have a flat nose or have white skin? Why is race the big thing? People need to lighten up. 'That's racist!'. My word.....:vd:

We understand racism and many of us have lived as minorities and are married to people of a different race. We just think you should be able to tell a joke and in times of yore it was perfectly acceptable to do so. Now if Gascoigne had said this aggressively and added a few expletives then I could understand the joke might be problematic, but it seems to have been relatively harmless going by the report.
This is just crap. Tyson Fury made some remarks police investigated and concluded he had no case to answer. The same should happen here if it was innocent. No issue.
There was a white woman sacked for re-sending a joke about Muslims. On the face of it an over reaction. When you looked into the story you find out she had previous history of making these jokes, had been warned and then still did it.

A joke will nearly always come at the expense of something or someone, it is the nature of a joke. It is a joke, it was in poor taste, that is where it should end. Does it really require investigation at the taxpayers expense? Probably not. You seem to have no sense of humour, Rocco. Have you never before mocked someone or been offensive? Should people investigate you or is it just that race is the big issue? Are you fine with mother in law jokes, or should all jokes be banned completely? Power play? What is that? Like how the media have treated Gascoigne and hounded him for 20 years? Gascoigne told a pithy little joke and again the media wants to hound him.

Just as an artist can paint anything, a comic can say anything no matter how tasteless. Well, that should be the case. Now if you want to tell a silly joke then fine, but if you want to cross the line with some kind of meanness, it is only then that there should be a price. With your approach to humour Rocco, I should have pressed charges against 1000 people and understandably that isn't really the way to go about things for silly things said in jest.

I posit forth the view that comedy is a realm, like art, where anything goes. You choose to listen to that person or not. You can walk away if you don't like the style. I would never listen to Jim Davidson for that reason. However, I would never take away his right to say whatever he likes. Likewise, you can say whatever you like, but it should really be in joke form rather than just flat out abuse. Still, that is your call.
I haven't played a victim in this thread, but merely pointed out that racial jibes happen all the time and why is a racial joke more significant than to be told to kill oneself for instance? I don't understand how the joke can result in a police investigation and the behavior of people like you is perfectly fine. See it was a joke. It was not malicious. Rocco has said you can make a joke but it has to begin context and he gave examples on when it would be a joke.
I said he made some fair points early on, but he unwound quite messily thus discrediting his entire point of view. He has no consistency.
Comedians regularly mock their audience. It could be a fat person, an ugly looking person and people accept that it is cruel, but the nature of a certain type of comedian. Why is race more important than those other things. There shouldn't be an arbitrary choice where this is okay but that just isn't. There needs to be logic. If being offensive is this issue then you should probably outlaw comedy. I saw Jimmy Carr was investigated over some tiny joke about dwarves too. Not by the police but some TV watchdog. There is seemingly no free speech. Ban the word mong and all kinds of silliness.
There is a place for 'racist joke'; but the joke's punchline has to be the 'comedian's' ignorance. For example (as a Brit):

That's where I think Gascoigne probably gets away with it. He isn't known for saying very astute things and thus you can probably laugh along with the 'fool'. Rocco tried to say it was some 'power play', but you would struggle to find anyone more ridiculed or mocked than Gascoigne himself and by institutions that claim to transmitting news or stories of interest to the public.
