Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
Looks like Barrera-Ward is on. They say here there will be an official announcement on Thursday Jan 28.
Al fin Ward accede a enfrentar al cubano Sullivan Barrera en marzo por HBO
But can Sullivan Barrera receive fair officiating in Oakland? Will Ward have a personal referee like Jack Reiss working the fight, who'll permit him to use illegal tactics?

He's a good fighter, a Cuban with a strong amateur background. He's someone who might beat Ward in a fair fight, with fair officiating.

I've come to suspect and doubt all officials related to this otherwise awesome sport. If Barrera goes in worried about the judges he isn't winning anything and probably fewer rounds. A legit threat to Ward here though.

It's gonna take more than that to beat Ward.... Regardless of who the ref is.
Re: Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
Never seen him fight but if Ward is as good as he once was, he doesn't need a ref to win a fight. He easily wins them all.
Re: Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
Ward beats his fighters convincingly, how he does it is no different to Floyd/wlad negating their opponents.
Re: Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
Probably not, but in theory he might do better the more lenient the ref is towards both men. He's the bigger stronger guy, without the skills to box Ward from what I can tell. Making it a scrappy fight might give him a better chance.

It looks like the fight is official.
Re: Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
I'm rooting for Sullivan Barrera to somehow beat the selfish prima donna, but the deck will be stacked against him in Ward's hometown of Oakland.
I just hope the California Commission's shady referee Jack Reiss isn't going to be working. He always helps Ward by allowing him to foul, while repeatedly admonishing his opponents for nothing - he's California's version of Texas' Lawrence Cole and the UK's Ian John Lewis.
Re: Will the officials in Oakland be fair to Sullivan Barrera?
This kid was picked for a reason. I don't think ward needs the help of the ref to win this one, but it being in his backyard isnt a bad insurance policy. Barrera starts too slow and if he allows ward to dictate the pace and be first, the fight will be over before it starts. barreras only chance is to jump on ward and catch him cold. Not to get wild, remain focus and let his hands go and string his punches together faster than the fight above. If he fights like that, hes gift wrapping opportunities for ward. I think barrera has the potential to be a future star but for right now, hes not ready. team ward knows this.

I'd sooner see Ward face these unexposed guys than "names" that haven't got a hope in hell like Paul Smith.
That's a pretty good stoppage win over Murat. Considering Barrera's amateur background and natural size advantage he looks worth a shot.

That rocket head launch into Kessler's face should've resulted in an immediate point deduction, at best.

Hell, yes. The problem I have with it is that he's not even throwing a punch where it could be construed that the movement of his head is connected to the motion of a punch he was throwing. That I would deem an accidental contact. Wards hands were at his waist when he leads with his head and grapples immediately, neck high, after to lock up kessler. Prison Rules....:-\

Exactly. There was no intent to throw a punch. It was rocket head launch.... then grab. B.S. move that should have cost him an immediate point deduction and some money to boot.

Here someone explains how Ward has been cheating with PEDs during his pro career
Victor Conte explains how to get away with cheating by avoiding PED testing at certain times. Conte worked with Andre Ward.
