Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
I personally have to go with James "Bone Crusher" Smith. Followed very closely by Oliver "The Atomic Bull" McCall.
Close runners up include in no particular order of sexiness:
"The Body Snatcher"
"Sx Heads" Lewis
"Touch of Sleep" Williamson
Boom Boom and Chop Chop ( honorable mentions) Ray Mancini and DeMarcus Corley

Glenwood the real beast brown.
Johnny the entertainer nelson .

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
While undefeated Second to Nunn is a favourite.
You know a nickname is good when the fighters first name is not really used:
As mentioned Bonecrusher Smith is an excellent one; also Buster Douglas, Razor Ruddock and The Hitman Hearns. Talking of Tommy, I actually like his other less famous Motor City Cobra Moniker more; Tommy too.
Ray Boom Boom Mancini actually took his nickname from his Dad Lennie.
Brits wise, I liked Bomber Bruno/Graham and a personal favourite was Chris P Bacon.
But the king of the nickname of course was The Dancing Destroyer, The King of Sting, The Count of Monte Fisto, The Prince of Punch, The Master of Disaster, The One and Only Apollo Creed.

I always liked Wilfredo "El Radar de St. Just" Benitez

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Marvelous Marvin Hagler
Lights Out Toney (Prime)
Adrien "The Problem" Broner is a cool name. Too bad it's wasted on a not so great fighter.

Technically that is not a nickname, he was so pleased with it, it legally became his name!

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Hagler is heretofore DQ'ed. His only DQ, I might add.

I prefered his 'Mighty Atom' Moniker. But I think your Bounty Hunter reference is up there as a great one. And Hunter himself was very good, but one of them 'who needs to fight him?' types.

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Juan "The Hispanic causing panic" Lazcano
Sammy" The who can Mexican" Vasquez
Tiger "Georgia Deacon" Flowers

Lew "living death" and "sweetwater slinger" Jenkins
Darnell "ding a ling man" Wilson
Greg "Mutt" Haugen

The best one is in fiction land
The Italian Stallion

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Holyfield lived up to both names The-Real Deal Holyfield. And The Warrior.
The Executioner Hopkins.
Monte Two Guns Barett
Hector Macho Camacho.
Up until Haglar... John was the beast Mugabi.
Not a big fan of women boxing but Laila "she-bee stinging" Ali was catchy.
The Worst has to be The Quiet man....that was his fight style, so I guess it fits Ruiz.

Chuck "The Bayonne Bleeder" Wepner.
Another vote for Johnny The Entertainer Nelson.
-
Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Lights Out always my favourite
The Problem is good too but as said belongs to an average fighter
-
Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
I think "The Problem" would be more fitting to fighter who poses a real difficult fighter to overcome. Someone who has a style who makes it hard for you to look good against. Winky Wright for example.

Re: Greatest boxing nicknames of all time: post them here
Should start a new thread about nicknames that should have been applied. for instance Herol Graham was never a bomber and that one should have gone to Nigel Benn.

Herol Graham was very much a bomber, he had the nickname since school. And unlike say Bruno who had the nickname because of his power, Herol had it because he always 'bombed' around.

What is bombed around?
It is a slang term for running very fast:
Herol will bomb around, he is the bomber!

Yes , although lots of people due to Herol's feminine voice mistakenly think his nickname is - Herol " Bummer " Graham.

Not everyone knows that 'Junior' Jones' real name is Ivy Jones. When you switch 'Junior' with 'Ivy' you come out with a much more awe-inspiring alias.
In this cornerrr... 'Poison' Ivy Jooones!

Those are among the best, first one was what I thought of :P If either of those first two had happened to be greater fighters, they would be clearly regarded as such.
