Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Do you guys know of anyone who you felt had promise but turned out to be total washes?!?
Jerson Revelo comes to mind. I really felt he had something extra. But it turned out he wasn't much of anything.
Henry Akinwande. I REALLY felt he could have dominated the HW division in the 90's. He had it all. But that one piss-poor fight with Lennox Lewis destroyed that.
Panchito Bojado. Man, I felt he was the next big thing. What a bust!
;D

Jo-el Scott seemingly had tons of potential and was a big punching Heavyweight. many were calling him the most exciting since Tyson...
Bojado is good call, around the same time Abdullaev and Ricardo Williams Jr also had a ton of hype.

Yup. Williams was another wash. I mean, he just did NOT have it. He wasn't hungry enough. Williams career is what showed me that American amateur boxing was on a serious decline.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
I am ashamed to say the following were going to be good dominant champions :-
Seth Mitchell
Andre Berto
Shea Neary
:-X

Based on his product 'Body Lube by Victor Ortiz' -- I'd say Oscar's young charge probably got bummy on the regular.

I've said Bojado in similar threads and was surprised so many felt the same.
I'd argue that he didn't end up bummy. It's not like he failed to show up. Each of his three losses.. Damn man....those guys brought their BEST game.
To this day DLH had no clue that when he gave Bojado a chance with Forbes...a beast would show up. I remember that fight well. Thinking Damn....when did Steve ever look so in shape, hungry and angry...he wasn't a big puncher, but his shots were crispy against Bojado. It was a Damn good fight. Forbes was just on his best game.
For a few years Jorge Linares was my next FB...but he has bounced back. His fight with Demarco was a clinic...until Demarcos corner told him straight up... u need to stop him... Damn...Demarco broke Linares down!!
Kabong and I both felt strong about a HW named Malcolm Tann. Show stopper had a nice punch, stamina and charisma....now he bummed out.
HW Chazz Witherspoon, nephew to Terrible Tim...didn't expect for him to lose so much without even getting a title shot.
Embarrassed to say Kevin Queen-pin... I mean King-pin Johnson. ESPN showcased him against then undefeated Devin Vargas...America's next best HWs LOL.
Dusted Devin, had a stinging jab, bad attitude. Then he met Vitali. Fury, Charro Joshua beating him like he is at best a journeyman.
And the biggest bum: Chris Arreola. What a massive under achiever he turned out to be.
@Master
Andre Berto did not bum out.
Turns pro:2004
Trinket belt:2007 NABF
WBC 2008-2011
We can agree he wasn't beating world class, but he did his job and defended his belt for the years before losing to Ortiz.
His 2nd loss comes 8 years into his career.
Not the best resume, but hardly the resume of a fighter turned bummy.

David the American dream Reid

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Bojado
Ortiz
Berto
Guzman
Gamboa (sorry dude never reach the potential or hype that was around him)
Bute
and the list goes on

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
I'm pretty close to adding Andre Dirrell. Not bummy as much as an underachieving sap
-
Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
David Reid. Had skill, but he came out the gate taking hard shots to the head. He didn't have a lick of defense.
-
Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Audley
David Price has a long way to go to get anywhere near the potential/expectation he had
-
Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Bojado and David Reid defo spring to mind.
Also Pele Reid. Audley and David price of late
A little bit diifferent , as he did hit the heights, but Naseem Hamed's career also left us feeling a little short changed.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Saigon Skipper Kelp.
Errol Christie.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
David Price is a good shout.
I always thought Alex Arthur had it in him to go on to world level, same with Kevin Mitchell.
That Nigerian fella Ajose Olusegun always looked like he might go on, but never really got any big fights and I think he moved on to somewhere else.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Have a hard time categorizing guys as bummy unless its one who blows weight, self sabotages and phones it in when the chips are down. A bullshit artist. Say Gamboa and Guzman fit the bill. Guys like Skipper Kelp just ran there course and hit the ceiling as far as talent. Tough level b battler throughout. I thought Al Kotey was on his way. I'd actually call the conduct of Broner bummy. Literally. He is a con job. Angel Vazquez and Eddie Cook should have gone much further on natural talent.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Another vote for David Price, looked like he could have gone all the way and he hit like a truck.
I suppose that you could argue that his losses don't really count because they were against people who failed drug tests but the flaws were there regardless and you can't imagine that people like Fury, Klit or Wilder would have struggled against them on peds or not.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
I think Berto and Ortiz are huge let downs i think there bummy compared to what they could of done. Also not a Bum but JML i think kinda underachieved people were calling him next Gomez and he gets destroyed by a guy i would not guess ever in Saldio and thats it.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Bowe was another guy that was not a bum but man he sure fucked up his career. It was not drugs but food that did him in and the wars he had but i think the food pretty much fucked him. I mean the weight he would have to lose for fights is just plain body destroying.

His eye would have kept him from greatness also.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Jorge Luis Gonzales and Audley Harrison come to mind.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
David Price is the guy who NEVER got chin checked in the gym, got chin checked in a real fight, and never recovered. Plus, in hindsight, losing to Thompson twice didn't help him a great deal either. Thompson being the gate-keeper in many respects. Price is done. Sad, but some times it goes like that.
David Reid on the other hand was just rushed too early. Never should have had that Trinidad fight at that time. They rushed him and ended his career prematurely. He could have done it, but had it not been for the eye, well....
Jorge Luis Gonzalez gave us the TEMPLATE on what to expect from Cuban fighters that turned pro in America- watch their weight, habits, people they hang with and their partying, then you have a winner like Rigondeaux and an apparent winner like Ortiz. But, if you don't watch all of that, you have Odlanier Solis, Gamboa and Gonzalez.

Re: Guys we thought were good but ended up bummy?!?
Andrew Maynard was propped up for greatness as well.
