Mugabi in his prime versus Canelo at this stage in his career for the WBC middleweight championship. AT 160lbs!!! (Thanks Primo)
Who would win?
My pick is Mugabi before the 5th round. I have a hard time seeing Canelo picking of those precise shots from John. The only way to defeat him then was to have a granite chin, take his assault and try to grind yourself into fight again. Canelo would land punches, but they are to few to make a difference.
At 155lb or 160lb?😂

I think Canelo is hiding the fact that he is an overweight light middleweight bully who is being disguised and promoted as a superstar.

Mugabi was tough. But he is seriously overrated. His career is pretty much known for giving Hagler a good fight and getting blown out in 1 against Terry Norris and Gerald McClellan. The best fighter he beat was Rene Jacquot. And that only happened cuz Jacquot hurt his ankle in the 1st and wasn't able to continue. Against Alvarez he don't make it passed the 5th

Don't forget We're talking about a guy who has never fought anyone heavier than 155lb against a guy who in his time was World class at 160. I'm not saying Mugabe was some kind of great, but surely he was World level?
Mugabi fights him at 55 and knocks him out. He beat a lot of good fighters at 54 and was on the rise. He fought his heart out against Hagler; that Mugabi beats Canelo in 4-5.
Make it Iinteresting. Make Canelo hit 155 that day.
Great point about same day weigh-ins. We should consider that more when comparing guys in different eras. Canelo would be a LHW Back then!Quote:

But that’s all he had. In hindsight, he never even had the chin to compete at the highest level and as we all know, you can only get so far with a punch. Sure he did well against Hagler but that had more to do with Hagler. The guy took 4 years off after Hagler/Thomas to gain his confidence back as false as it was and got blasted out by both Norris and dog torturer in less than 6 minutes. He stood straight up, went straight back and fought much of the time like he had one foot nailed to the floor.
I don’t like how Alvarez is being handled but the kid is good and he's got a solid chin to boot. I'm not challenging Mugabi's fighting heart or him as a person but I just like Alvarez beats the snot out of him.
Losing to Hagler, Norris and G Man is not a bad thing but Duane Thomas was a bad one.
Sometimes you learn the real deal after a defeat. Mugabi ballooned to near 200lbs post Hagler and was really never the same. He rolled over some gritty second tier types getting to Hagler but when your biggest claim to fame is based on a loss, I mean come on. Tough dude but Canelo would be like size, better composed and his boxing would see him do well me thinks. If Duane Thomas shatters you orbital bone with a left hook and makes you turn your back..Alvaraz could get to him too.Quote:
