Fighters who had the most title shots
Worst HW champ thread made me think of Axel Schulz. Not a bad fighter, but thought he was a one and done champ. After boxrec'ing to see what title fight I watched him lose to Moorer, ---I didn't realize it was vacant.
More surprising was seeing not only how many title shots he had...but lost.
And!!!!!:o. How many were vacant titles.
If Box rec is accurate, Axel Schulz:
... did win some vacant BDB German title.
Then..
A draw with Henry Akinwande for a vacant EBU European title.
Next fight he got a rematch for the vacant EBU...and lost to Henry.
Fought George Forman for the IBF and vacant WBU: Lost.
Few months later fought Frans Botha for the now vacant IBF: NC
Few months later fought Michael Moorer for the same vacant belt-IBF:Lost.
5 wins, three years later fights Wlad Klitschko for WBA (intercontinental) oh, and the vacant EBU again: Lost.
Who are some fighters that have had multiple title shots that compares to this dude?
-
No one I've seen compares to Rocky Juarez.
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Griffith jumped right out
Judah comes to mind
Toney
Salido
Zapada
And ftr Schultz got severely jobbed by that Foreman decision. He clearly won that fight and afterward would never be the same

I hated Juarez. He just kept getting pushed and getting gift decisions but could never win a title after so many shots. I never thought he was good from the beginning and I always wondered why he was such a golden boy.

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Frank Bruno had more shots than a blind man in a clay pigeon shooting contest.
-
Judah was my initial thought, followed by Martyn Murray and it has to be said George Groves.

won the world title on his 4th attempt
but common lets look at the title fights he lost, witherspoon, lewis, Tyson
and Tyson in his defence
there should be another thread asking which fighter has the toughest list of opponents for his world title challenges
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Arthur Abraham seems to gets title shots all the time.
Judah must have naked pictures of the powers that be because he always gets a shot.

Some would say that was karma for the Akinwande 'draw'...
My 2p on this subject would be Yaqui Lopez. 0-4 in 'world title fight' and also lost North American and State title fights.

He actually had 5.
vs. De Leon 1983 (WBC)
vs. Muhammad 1980 (WBC)
vs. Galindez 1978 (WBA)
vs. Galindez 1977 (WBA)
vs. Conteh 1976 (WBC)
Hopkins had 5 also

I cannot even blame memory as I checked on boxrec to make sure I had the numbers right; I simply cannot count to five!

He did win a soft trinket title. His first fight with Barrera was a good fight.changed decision with a rematch and he never fought with a sense of urgency afterward.
Yet as you stated gift title fight after gift title fight...

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
The Shultz run is really a trip. He has his ranking bought and payed for and is exhibit A in lawsuits and investigations that bring down Lee and help put spotlight on corruption in boxing. He is looked at as a joke vs Foreman then goes on to absolutely box his ears off. Rematch ordered, Big George says thanks but no thanks so Shultz gets Botha for vacant title. He earns his title fight after the fact. Then he beats Botha, gets jobbed, and Botha proves a steroid cheat so the fight goes NC aka it never happened. Ibf orders a rematch for the dirty hair ball and a judge tells ibf to feck right off and orders Shultz vs Moorer right away. Weird like that. Guy brought in from obscurity and gets the last laugh with three massive pay days. Then poof. Gone.
Zapata, Galindez and Judah good calls! I remember a guy calling Judah the Buffalo Bills of boxing. Good enough to get to the dance but struggled to steal the stage. Juarez already mentioned also. More lives than a feral cat. Pazienza had a bunch. Light to Spr. Middle you'd figure as much. Today Humberto Soto and Jhonny Gonzalez. Leo Gamez ran the board and became four division champ. Guess you have the two classes of title shots. Ones you bring in who always put up a decent scrap but condidered somewhat safe. The measuring sticks. Then as we see more today the guys who 'collect' trinkets and just as quickly dump them. More an indictment on the sub divisions mountains of plastic belts they hand out.

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Nice class Spicoli.
And the Moorer fight was close IMO. Didn't he fracture Mike's nose or jaw?
Great call on Johnny G. Can't believe he is still add it.

Agree close and Moorer power on display. He takes guff because of chin but Moorer evolved his style. Temperament and sound solid boxer at core under flat feet and power game. Not sure of post Shultz but he did complained about jaw and possible break after Botha fight.
Tossing in Marcos Villasana who got it done on the 5th shot. Hoko had his eyes slammed shut and hit low but would take the rematch.

Villasana v Hodgkinson was an excellent fight.
What about Jorge Vaca or Jorge Castro and Roberto Duran.

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Bruno was a good call he was good boxer with a lot of power but his ring iq was just bad. Not to mention he had no idea what to do when he was hurt if he knew how to stall just some he might of been champ more but he most likely get curb stomped by Tyson and Lewis different level.
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Terry Marsh had a good shot at Frank Warren!

bad ring iq? he out boxed lewis for 6 rounds, and witherspoon and was winning by miles against bonecrusher before he lost
his ring iq was very good, if fights were 6 rounds he'd have been an unbeatable champion

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Vincenzo Nardiello
Got chinned about 18 times trying to win the WBC Super Middleweight title. Through the 90's it felt like he was on ITV every weekend getting beat up by some Brit Super Middle champ.

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots

It was bad against Tyson, but fear can do strange things to a person. ;)

Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Sort of related but for some reason I just thought of Jimmy Young and the fact that he only got one shot. It almost seems criminal. He draws with Shavers, gives Lyle a clinic, loses a very debateable against Ali for his title shot, puts on another clinic against Lyle, sends Big George off to find his maker and then loses a close one to Norton. In between those fights he also beat 6 others. It took but 3 years. Today it would have taken 7 years and he would have gotten 4 title shots. His drop was like an anvil after Norton.
I thought of Moore also. 160 fights to get his first shot.

Um title fights are 12 rounds or 15 so that shit you just said is pretty dumb i am sorry. When you have no idea what to do when you are hurt and can not stall your ring iq is lacking. His chin was not the greatest should got his defense up and learned how to buy time while stunned.

Could be all of the above for why the title eluded him after.. being that awkward good but the Norton fight was an eliminator? Then the wbc gets strip happy and Young may have slept on a poor mans version of himself losing twice to Ocasio but I've never seen those. He upset a lot of pre planning by knocking George around, cruel in that after Norton he watched them near the end and calling it a day while he went on to fall into stepping stone role vs a handful of the young mishmash of 80's wannabes.

He did indeed lead comfortable going into the tenth against Bonecrusher, but he was not out boxing Lewis; that is a myth.
I was there and although I went as a Bomber supporter, most of the people I went with wanted Lennox to win.
Bruno was edging it, but at no time were any of my friends concerned. The fight was close enough for Lennox fans to think 'it will be only a matter of time, until Lewis strikes'; and he did with over five rounds to spare!
The 'outboxing' thing makes me chuckle, it is nearly as silly as when The Truth pointed out he landed 21 punches to Tyson's 19 before their fight was stopped in a little over 90 seconds...

The thing is with Bruno is that he did not have any idea what to do when he was hurt which i feel takes away from his ring iq i mean that big problem. Bruno when hurt would just stand there open ready to get punch in the face as much as he could just not very smart.

he was outboxing him
how many time do people watch a fight where a favourite is losing, expecting him to find the KO and it never comes
the KO punch was a hail mary thrown by a man who had run out of ideas
and either way, outboxing him or a close fight, proves Bruno has ring iq
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Let it go with Bruno!
He got tired and most fighters knew they could try and take him late. Bruno was holding on for dear life against Oliver.
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
Bruno was a low iq fighter who had not idea what to do when he got clocked, had bad stamina, and his chin was on the border of being bad. He managed to beat McCall but lost to everyone else in title fight he manged to lose to them all he could box and had power but could never be the best.

It's a bit harsh having a pop at Bruno, saying he could never be the best. With Britain's "12 World Champions" today that everybody wanks all over, how many of them are the best? Until 6 months ago, Bruno was proven to be the best HW this country ever created.
Lennox Lewis was Canadian/Jamaican, and even if you don't believe that, you can't say he was created over here, he won an Olympic Gold medal for another country ffs.
Nobody has a pop at Henry Cooper.
-
Re: Fighters who had the most title shots
I am going to start a new thread on Bruno.

Yea but i do not rank cooper at all so why call him shit i know he was nothing great to begin with. He got a shot on ali then got his ass kicked and then got his ass kicked by a old Paterson. I would not waste my time even calling Cooper bad already know who was not elite.
