Interestingly, Marciano averaged just over 30 punches a round in the same fight. Thats thrown not landed. The hev average since compubox was invented is about 40.Quote:

I agree with you that the first Walcott fight he threw about 30 punches per round. And it seems you agree with me that many of his other fights that we have videos of he did average about 60 punches per round. My original point I feel still shows that the heavyweight great of the past threw far more punches then gladimir Klitschko does/ didQuote:

Another thing you have to factor in is that Marciano was fighting guys years out of their prime or not on the same level. And yes he ko'd Walcott but he also got his lights punched out for the majority of the first 12 rounds.
I think we will see a different Wlad in the rematch and you know, sometimes things just don’t gel in a fight. A classic NO production fight for me is Briggs/White Poodle errrr Wolf. Sergei threw about 10 punches the entire fight and yet when he fought Friday Ahunanya he threw close to 120 in the tenth round.
This might not make any sense but we can’t overlook the masterful performance Fury put on to take away all those advantages Wlad has had for over a decade against other opponents. He took his jab and took his grab away, looked at him straight in the eye during the fight, moved and pot shotted and almost seemed to have the fight in the bag mentally before the opening bell. Vitali is probably training his brother right now in an old East German prison.
Overall I'd imagine the numbers would favour the old guard but these guys were light heavyweights really and punch numbers for the most part increase as you drop in weight class. Margarito actually has the record for most punches thrown over a fight with 1675 against Clottey followed by Zack Padilla
with 1596 against Olivera which 1290 were power shots. Its rare to see anything close to those numbers with the big men but not unheard of. A few Hevs have broken the 1000 barrier.
I think it easier hitting a 5 10 rocky with no reach what so ever and who is 190 pounds. I mean he was whooping rocky for 13 rounds before that punch i really think that more putting down the rock then anything else. I would love to see how either would do fighting giants today.
