Suspicious Endings to fights
just wanted to discuss fights with suspicious endings
I watched Froch Groves one last night again and I know there was controversy around the stoppage at the time but having rewatched it, it really was a shocking stoppage
there is absolutely no way on earth that anyone can convince me that that fight should have been stopped, groves didn't actually look particularly hurt
reasons Howard Foster did what he did?
- on one hand you could just say he got it wrong, it was an intense fight and he just made the wrong decision
- on another hand you could say he saw something that everyone else didn't, being very close to the action
- and on another you could say that the matchroom cash-cow was losing and should have been well behind on the scorecards, and so foster acted to for financial reasons on behalf of the promotion

On the other hand he stopped it because he fancied taking dogs abuse for months.

The referee saw it from the opposite side to us. He saw the Froch left hook crash against an unprotected chin and that's what made his mind up to step in, Froch landed a few more half punches and that was that.
Shit refereeing maybe, a touch early is all I'd say and that happens all over the place all of the time, it doesn't equate to some great conspiracy.

I dunno mate, seemed very suspicious to me
at the time of the fight I was hyped up enjoying it, best fight id seen for a while and then it was stopped so I was screaming murder, my opinion in the days following might have been a bit bias
last night tho, there was none of the emotion, I only watched coz there was nothing else on
and it was a bad stoppage, groves had not looked at all hurt at any point in the fight, a punch landed on the top of the head and wobbled him but he had only been wobbled for seconds and he was still throwing punches
its not as if he had rocked around the ring for a bit first

more importantly, Froch was just as fucked and couldn't finish him off. he was all over the shop!

yeah Froch continued throwing punches after the ref jumped in and they didn't look like they were from a man who had that "one more clean shot" like he described
I reckon my gran could have taken them

There is nothing more dangerous than a brave referee...
In the example used both ended up winners, selling out Wembley in a rematch.

I think the Froch ending was a bad call from the ref and nothing more.
I remember Asumah Nelson v Jim Mcdonald and Jim was actually held down wehn he was put down in the last round.

Calzaghe-Manfredo takes some beating. I also thought the Qullin-Jacobs was a bad stoppage. Lucas Maythesse-Vivian Harris was bad too. Andy Lee-Brian Vera was just terrible. The dumbass referee stopped the fight when Andy Lee was still landing shots and trading with Vera.
Groves - Froch was bad...but I think Froch would have stopped Groves anyway

ignoring history and your opinions of the fighters going in to the fight, if that was the first time you had seen both fighters, Im not sure you would have had the opinion that froch would have stopped him anyway
froch looked much more likely to be stopped
Calazaghe Manfedo was bad, I don't remember andy lee v brain vera being bad tho

I'm not sure McCallum had Julian Jackson out on his feet. I think Julian deserved the benefit of the doubt.

Lonnie Beasley vs Green always comes to mind. Ref 'backs off' Beasley who falls down in 12th..ref kneels over him and waves it off tko. Fight even on cards. Dude was hurt, but at least issue a count ;D
Remember Mills knocking Hopkins out of ring, still think that was legit. Bowe vs Mathis was crappy. Kid took a knee, got clocked on knee with blatant late shot and ref, commission and judge huddle ring center...yelling at camera and "hey its on us" and rule NC.

It's easy for me to go from suspicious ending to crappy refereeing. So I guess I can't name fights with a suspicious ending.
