Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Ward MIA at the news conference and on the road to more demands than a Hollywood diva. I think he is going to Stevenson this match up.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Ward looked really sloppy and weak against Brand. I don't think he really wants any of this. I'm guessing he thought he would be better against Brand and is having doubts. I think Kovalev might as well KO Ward in front of his hometown. He is getting stopped wherever it is.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
I'm not ready to believe everything at this point, but if Ward did pull out of this fight, I would lose basically all respect for him. And that is coming from a big ward supporter.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Almost no details really, selfishly I hope Kovalev would agree to it being in Oakland if that's the big deal, much as it is BS.

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Oh for the love of..
Promoters squabbling over plans for Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev bout - LA Times
A fight between ward and eubank would be split down the middle 100/100. Just my opinion but f*ck ward/ roc Nation... He disappears for 2+ years, expects to be reinstalled immediately at the top of the pound 4 pound list. Fights a catch weight fight and the jumps to a division with a consensus champ and leapfrogs other fighters by just challenging Barrera and then Capt. Awkward.. and now wants to dictate where he fights for the belts after 2 mediocre performances.... Between caƱelo, eubank jr, ward, Wilder.. it's like a diva pageant. If someone runs into Floyd, kick him in the nuts for me and tell him I said thanks for nothing...

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
this shit always happens with big fights dunnit
doesn't mean its not gonna happen
although I would be surprised if it did
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
I'm not saying too much till we know for definite, But this would not surprise me in the slightest .
-
Ward is not thrilling to watch, but he is very good and has always eventually gotten around to fighting the best.
He's also carried himself with more class and dignity than 90% of professional fighters.
Let's see how this plays out.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Ward would be an utter cunt to pull out of this fight but he does try to get the most advantages he can get in every fight even when it is not deserved.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Ward said himself the contracts were signed but didn't know the details so that stuff may have yet to be ironed out, and it might be too soon to comment but i think Duvas onto something. We all know wards penchant for fighting in Oakland... and its probably unlikely that it makes more money anywhere besides Vegas.
That might not be the situation.... or that might be a fraction of the situation. They could be trying to nickel and dime on everything from location, to gloves, to silly sh*t like the ring walk. I will say that if anything Duva needs to keep her cards closer to her chest in dealing with these people. Negotiating in good faith is not an easy thing and probably should have learned her lesson when the same thing happened with Chickenson...

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
I thought HBO had a cast iron deal? They gave him a three fight contract and let him have two joke paydays on the understanding the third fight would be Kovalev.
Maybe Ward thinks HBO are so desperate because Haymon has signed so many fighters they'll let him dodge it and fight another no hoper. I hope HBO and/or his promoters tell him to fuck off and get on with it.
-
Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Ward makes ridiculous demands so when the fight falls through he can say "Oh well..... I tried."
When in truth he's scared shitless of getting KTFO'ed by someone who'll just walk through his overrated shit and beat the shit out of him.
Maybe Brand has a neighbor Ward can fight instead.

Brand's sister is supposed to have a good left hook. Probably be able to get her for less than fifty thousand as well.

Wondering if it'll be HBO who have the breakdown with his promotion rather than Duvas. When they went on the air prior to bell it looked like a rehearsed hostage recording the way they justified why they were airing Brand as opponent. When it went rounds all of the sudden he was this crafty awkward type who may have been overlooked :p
Actually rewatched some the other night as I having trouble getting to sleep. Hopkins was absolutely trashing Ward in a way I've never heard him go after a guy. Very subtle jabs about how if he wanted to be "the Golden boy"..nice plug..he had to step it up. On and on.

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Demands.
I remember listening to Hagler calling someone out...he said..."150 thousand dollars....whose gonna turn down that kind of money"...:(
-
It seems they've agreed on Vegas. Ward may have wasted his prime sitting idle but when fighting he has always looked to fight the best. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I'm happy to give Ward the benefit of the doubt, but I'm still not sure this fight will happen in November. I think that after all Ward's inactivity, he may feel that he's a little "undercooked" and may want a bit more time.
I still believe that when this fight goes ahead, if he is anything like the fighter he was, Ward wins probably by UD.

Kov is a quality fighter and the best Ward has ever faced.

Is Ward bottling it I wonder ,! maybe he does not fancy it the Crusher is a beast shit I don't blame him if he does.

Yep. and Ward is a quality fighter and the best Kov has ever faced, INCLUDING a 49 year old Hopkins.
so now we've established that, what exactly does it mean?

I have a feeling you might be right. The problem is I don't think HBO gives him any more time. They wont him take some softy in a polish fight. That was Brand ...and now hes in the final fight of the contract. He can try to stall but I don't think kovalev wants to wait six months to a year on a shelf while ward gets his sh*t together. Especially, if they have a contract signed for November.
I think this might be the way out for Ward if hes looking for it. If the tickets cant be announced until "too late" to promote and make the fight lucrative, Kovalev walks/fights late sub and ward has the contract broken without being liable. He still owes HBO a fight though unless hbo decides to break that contract by vetoing every opponent but kovalev. Either way ward gets his time as long as Kovalev comes back.
Which sounds similar the GGG scenario. He wanted the fight but wanted interim fights, it came in at the last minute after the lemieux unification was signed... because everyone has to wait for ward to be ready and then give him what he wants. Forget what your plans are or what it does to your career, the sales, the networks. As long as Ward's comfortable. Unprofessional to say the least.

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Keeping the faith. Ward saying post fight if he isn't ready in 22 years he will never be.
I say the fight happens November.

Honestly since Dawson, Ward looks to going through the paces and has many similarities and spoils down like Hopkins. Not the same but similarities. If anything Kovalez got a worn older blue print and dominated out of the fight.

That is Spicoli speak for Ward has not impressed for many years now and Kov will not be denied.

People seem to form their opinions completely separate from the facts. Ward saying he is ready means he isn't. Them agreeing to the venue must mean he's trying to stop the fight. Kovalevs manager saying "the fight is absolutely a go for 11/19 means Ward must be trying to put it off. Boxing talk, it's more dramatic than Cotto.

So wrong.
Just believe in wards skills..he can beat Sergey in various ways.

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
It's official! This is great news and looking forward to it!

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Awesome. Took a long time to get this done and neither did anything but harm their "auras" by taking their last fights respectively, but it doesn't make this one any easier to call that's for sure. Not to be a downer, but if neither looks any better against each other, I could see this fight being hugely underwhelming.

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Sweet!!! Do we have the details? Like the venue, date, etc?

T-Mobile arena - 19th November

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
Although there were some last-minute issues as Andre Ward promoter Roc Nation Sports attempted to renegotiate elements of the agreement with Main Events for the Nov. 19 fight against unified light heavyweight world titleholder Sergey Kovalev, they worked things out after lawyers spent hours upon hours on the phone in recent days. The much-anticipated HBO PPV fight, the first pay-per-view headline bout for both boxers, will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and be formally announced at a news conference in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Stevenson may fight kovalev if he beats ward because it will be about time to cash out his career fighting the #1 p4p guy

Re: Kovalev-Ward in jeopardy
hat has Ward done in the last 5 years to deserve a title shot???? S.F.A Let alone dictate terms, he doesn't deserve 50/50 even. He needs to retire

He has enough success throughout his career to make this fight very interesting despite being inactive for a few years.

Pretty much, especially because he's end of 30th and he's slowly running out of time for one big payful payday.

So much hate for ward..why?
Kovalev is a beast and I can appreciate both their skills.
