Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
-
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
I think Kovalev will have a hard time early on but will settle in due to his power and being comfortable with the weight.
Andre will have to be on his bike and/or tie up the entire time he's not throwing punches
-
I see ward using his elusive boxing skills to beat kovalev in a decision.
I then see ward beating the degale vs jack winner at 175 or catch weight.
I then see ward beating GGG at a catchweight of 170 or 168 in summer 2018 to put a stamp on his pound for pound career.
-
Kovalev is a beast but ward is special..major upset if ward does loose and I will happily say the best man won...if a 50 year old Hopkins takes kovalev 12 rounds then imagine what a prime ward will do.
Ward is back and not going anywhere..
-
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
Ward will shine again and win by comfortable decision with a few rocky moments in between.
-
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
I'll take Kovalev dominating a ring legend in Hopkins over Ward snoozing to 12 over a blown up unknown spr middleweight any day of the week ;D. For sure Ward will try to sharp shoot Kovalev but I think he'll be surprised by his physicality and jab. If Kovalev boxes I see him taming Ward after hurting him and winning. Honestly have not seen Ward shine in years and he is being hit more often now. Damn fine match up!
-
I keep saying this but before his layoff, I say ward takes it very comfortably. Now, I still think he wins but will struggle a decent amount.
-
If Ward best Kovalev, degale then GGG at 168 all.convincing then retired.... I think him and Jones he would be tied as best supermiddles to Have fought ever ImO

Ward being hit more often?!
When was this?!
His entry into the 175 division has been perfect..elusive and still sharp.

Doesn't quite reach the same level i don't think as Roy and Ward if he did the above. Great fighter though

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
Kovalev will be too strong, active and skilled for Andre Ward.

Elusive yes ;D. Guy became the invisible man a bit. Barrera hit him more often than should have with jabs, even Brand with errant ugly shots.

I like Ward but Kov is a beast at the weight and Ward been out of action too long to win.

Floyd took a 2 year lay off..means nothing.
Jacobs had cancer and came back..
Depends on the fighter.

The same apparent Blown up lightweight beat a p4p welterweight legend in his prime..your point?
The p4p fighter you talk about starting at flyweight.

true but ward looked a little rusty in his fights back. it could just be because he was fighting lesser competition and didnt have to put in a ton of work but thats just how i see it. i could definitely see ward getting up for this fight and dominating.

The winner is the best..no excuses.
Kovalev is a beast and and can box.
Ward is on his 2nd prime that's why I think he has the advantage..he will use his elusive skills and avoid the big punches.
Either way, if Kovalev wins, he should get Stevenson and seriously consider moving up to dominate the cruiser weight division..I always forget who the current cruiser weight champion is..such a boring weight class now haye left..(flamesuit)

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs. Isaac Chilemba is now confirmed for the Kovalev-Ward PPV.
https://twitter.com/Main_Events/stat...41704234119174
Also, Sullivan Barrera and Vyacheslav Shabranskyy are both saying on twitter they want to fight each other, so hopefully Main Events and Golden Boy will permit this to be on the card as well.

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
I want Kov to win, I just don't think that Ward would have took the fight if he wasn't confident that he would win, he may grapple and spoil his way to a win but I just think think that Kov may be left a little confused.
Kov would fight a random dude on the street for a fiver, he just likes fighting and hurting people, thats why I like him.
-
I would have said Ward easy a few years back. I think he would have used his more diverse skill set to beat Kovalev up on the inside and his speed and elusiveness to confuse on the outside.
But I haven't seen that Ward since his return. He looks slower and less nuanced.
As is I take Kovalev now. I'd love to see Ward look up to his old form and whoever wins is the best. I will make no excuses after and just say the better man now won now.

I agree somewhat. Maybe I'm wrong, but the main difference I see in Ward is that he isn't as mobile these days. He stands and trades more often.
What has me picking Ward is that Chilemba had some success in making Kovalev think before he threw his punches to offset Kovalev's timing. Ward does that better than Chilemba.
I wish Ward had power to match his sublime skill set. I wonder if his power will be enough to keep Kovalev off of him for 12 rounds, or if his physical strength will be enough to smother Kovalev's power. At the end of the day, Ward doesn't know how to lose.
Ward by UD or SD.
It'll be interesting. Best fight of 2016. I'll order the PPV to support this level of quality matchup.

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
I still don't think this fight will happen
i hope it does mind

This scenario is entirely plausible, but I think you're being a bit optimistic with the Summer 2018 call.
Taking Ward's current level of activity into account, it will be more like Summer 2032!;D

Kovalev beat Hopkins, he should be fully prepared to beat Ward.

Bhop was old and he has always had problems with longer fighters with a good jab. Ward has shown no huge weakness yet. The biggest weakness I've seen in him is that wild inside fighters can get to him for a bit. Ward should win, but kovalev is really good so we will see.

No way Kov will lose easy, he will make a fight of it.

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
In the video, Andre Ward says "I was sandwiched in between a heroin addict and a crack head, I shouldn't be here"
But heroin addict or not, at least Ward's father had money, Ward grew up in a good neighborhood and his father took him to the boxing gym very often. Kovalev grew up poor in a rough neighborhood and had fewer opportunities, having a disabled father.

I love how ward previously says he didn't want anyone to know so he never talked about it. But now that its out, why not serve up mom and dad's memory for exploitation and work the angle, right? Good thinking..:-\

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
Kov is a nasty individual you see the way he fights he wants to really hurt his opponent, Ward is a clever fighter but can't see him surviving 12 rounds I think Kov in about 6 rounds.
-
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
I like both fighters. Kov is a brutal beast with under rated boxing skills who will not be denied. Ward is a very good fighter who should have been a superstar by now.
Ward has stepped up to take on the best fighter at the weight after a long lay off so think he will lose. I can not see Ward stopped but do see him lose a decision.
I intend to stay up and watch this fight because it is the best fight of the year for me.
-
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward
Had Ward stayed active with decent competition, I would say he would win by decision, but he hasn't fought a really good fighter since Froch 5 years ago, and has only had 5 fights since then. He's gonna have to make this fight boring & ugly by running & hugging all night to get the win, because if he stands and trades with Kovalev, he's gonna get hurt.

Running and hugging does not win a fight, even Wlad punched to win his fights.

Most of them but not Jennings and Sultan Ibragimov
