Stupid Fights that did not happen
What crazy fights were being hyped and manufactured that thankfully did not happen?

Stupid fight and a big mismatch. It is so obvious.

How do you think a cruiser weight is going to beat a former heavyweight champion who can punch, is faster, bigger and stronger?

If only it was that simple.

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
you've spoilt a decent thread now
it was a good idea but you've turned it into a thread about haye bellew which just isn't that stupid
fights like benn eubank 3, old Collins v old RJJ, might have been better to mention

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
I was thinking Haye v Briggs.

You can do better than that

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Haye vs Briggs is alright....I mean for a part timer to fight an old timer that's alright I guess it maybe sets up a fight vs a better heavyweight for the winner, maybe the off chance at a voluntary title defense.
Haye vs Bellew...meh I guess some Brits want it, but I am not all that hyped up about it why would I be? Is Haye making another run at cruiserweight? Is Bellew going to make a run at heavyweight? What does the winner get? Does it improve Bellew's ranking as a cruiserweight if he wins? It certainly doesn't immediately mean he's ready to compete vs the other heavyweights does it? What does Haye get??? Money and a little more tv time but what else? Does it move him closer to fighting for a belt?

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Ancient Larry Holmes against ancient George Foreman was being mooted at one point. I'm glad it never happened.
Mayweather against Golovkin was also a stupid match up that was being discussed.
Boxing being boxing, it's actually easier to list stupid fights that DID happen ...... Ali/Holmes, Leonard/Duran III, Louis/Marciano, Leonard/Camacho, Haye/anybody recently

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Vitali vs Valuev was always a stupid fight I wanted to see....just the sheer size of those guys. It would have been a stupid fight because let's face it Vitali would have just decimated Valuev.

No one decimated Valuev, he was too big.

Valuev wasn't JUST big, he was durable, I give him that...but he wasn't going to fight either brother because he'd get KO'd
I'm happy that Chris Byrd and John Ruiz never fought....would any of the judges have been awake at the end? I think when you put him in the right situation Chris Byrd could be an exciting fighter, but vs someone else negative and more of a mauler I don't think it would have worked out. I just despise John Ruiz...he was a cagey SOB though I'll give him that.

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Akinwande v Holyfield fell through, just had a feeling that would have been a borefest.
Tyson v Johnny Nelson would have been simply horrible.
-
Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Jones Jr vs Tyson
Jones Jr vs Douglas
Jones Jr vs Trinidad...before they were both near shot
Jones Jr vs Whitaker :vd: ??? Thank Merchant for that one as it would settle "p4p supremacy".
Holyfield vs Tyson 3
-
Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
....I hate to break it to you but RJJ vs Trinidad happened :(
RJJ vs Tyson would have been interesting.
Tyson vs Vitali wouldn't have been good thank Danny Williams for stopping that from happening

You missed the 'before they were near shot' part ;D. Jones was dropping Trinidads name when he was 168 going on 175 and Tito was still a welter. Stupid if it had happened then and when it did. I think Jones and the media we're clamoring for Tyson/heavyweight move cause boredom had set in with 175 mismatches. And he had work to do with the German fella? He would have lined his pockets PPV wise with a patched back together Tyson (who probably would have lost shot win or lose at Lewis) but arguably he self sabotaged himself longevity wise with Ruiz move to heavyweight and was all down hill. I mean if his pop called a near diabetic coma Douglas "too dangerous" why in the world think Tyson any less :greedy:

Arum says he wants to match Pacquiao and Lonachenko next, add that to the list

Conspiracy theorist? Haye will get SPARKED and you don't want to see it?

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Did anyone see the comment that Bob Arum made the other day/week
He said something along the lines of 'If Manny looks good in his next fight then we'll be looking for the biggest fight possible, we may even go for GGG'
He woke up the next day and read the headlines that Manny was calling out Golovkin and Arum had to put everyone straight and say that it was a complete throwaway comment that was meant to be taken as a joke

I may have spoken too soon on this joke because Manny has come out and said he is open to this fight, pathetic.

Not sure If serious, I have to assume no because the fight is preposterous

Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
Some don't see it as stupid but have to include a shop worn retirement talking Cotto vs two years out Marquez. Big names don't always mean good fights.

I've always said this was the fight for Manny. I would've matched Manny with Danny Garcia followed by Canelo and then retire instead of fighting Floyd. Stylistically he matches up well with the first two and I just don't see Floyd losing to Manny. If Manny beats Bradley, Garcia, and Canelo in his final three fights he goes out as a top 15 ATG in my opinion.
-
Re: Stupid Fights that did not happen
If this was Manny of 5 or 6 years ago I'd say go for it, but I don't think he wants CAnelo at 154 these days. Obviously the footspeed advantage would still be tremendous, but could he stay off the ropes all night? I doubt it.

I want people to fight in their own divisions. This yo-yo in weight stuff is a major problem. Why would anyone fight the hard fights in their division if there is even a chance they can get the payday against the Star 3 division up or 3 divisions down? The sport has become a circus act. And it doesn't just effect the clowns. The guys that set up the tents know if they hang around they just might get sent out to perform. So everyone does nothing in their divisions so not to risk the opportunity outside their division.

I agree but aren't you the person that is always angry at GGG for not fighting above his weight class?

No. I am angry at GGG because he's been picking and choosing who he will fight. He would go to 154 to fight a WW but not to fight a Jr MW.(Mayweather/Canelo) He would go to 168 for Steiglitz, Chavez, Froch, but not for Ward. Pick and choose, pick and choose. Even now it's all about Canelo, which means absolutely nothing for 160. His best opponent is a WW for F sake. He fought a WW!
If he looked at MW the whole time I would have no problems with GGG other than thinking he is too good for this crap division.

GGG best opponent was not a welterweight.
The only reason he would fight Canelo and Floyd is the money they bring.
