Well a Prime Cotto would have done better than the version he fought, but I wouldn't go so far to say he would have certainly stopped Floyd.
Paul Williams could have given Floyd a lot of trouble, dude just moved up to 160 since nobody at 147 or 154 wanted any part of him.
Alexis Arguello, Salvador Sanchez, would have certainly gotten to Floyd early in Floyd's career but that's putting Floyd outside of his own prime which is unfair.
Kostya Tszyu certainly had the pop to stop anyone.
Would have loved to have seen Kostya in there with Floyd... it's a shame he was washed up by then!
Would have loved to see Floyd doing the chicken dance that Zab did! ;D
Floyd is a lame person, so people like to be silly about this. I'd only feel pretty sure about the first 3, and those were all big welters which wasn't Floyds best weight obviously. Not saying all the others wouldn't stand a good chance on a given night, except Pryor at least, who literally could not box.
Top 3 but old Shane nearly did it and Tito could do it too.
Shane hurt Floyd, he didn't nearly beat him. He got completely outclassed aside from 30 seconds of that fight, and in his prime Floyd would have been at a better weight for himself also.
We tend to forget that Floyd wasn't a natural welter. So I agree that the natural world class welters like Robinson, Leonard, hearns, etc would have beaten Floyd.
I always thought that Duran was good enough at cutting off the ring to make Floyd uncomfortable and win a decision. I think Armstrong would have given him trouble too because he has a hard time with fighters who really pressure him and that is the exact style that he fought. I agree that prime de la hoya and Mosley would have given him trouble but not sure if they would win. Sweet pea I think could out defense Floyd and win a close decision.
I doubt there are many people who would just destroy him. I mean, styles make fights so there is always a possibility of somebody being able to beat him easily but I would guess that would only be a few people in history.
And Tito does not beat Floyd. Sure, it's possible for him to end it with a huge shot but Tito really struggled with good boxers.
Not to mention, Floyds granite chinned uncle Roger;D Tszyu is one of the most overrated guys ever, if you listen to some people. Floyd would have schooled him.
If this is the list (and I would only go so far as the top 5), it really does show what a good fighter Floyd was.
You gotta think out of the box when it comes to Mayweather. I'm not prepared to do it but what of a Quartey type. Think Hearns would also have Mayweather shitting himself. Loved Kostya but Mayweather would pick him apart. I'd be impressed watching Floyd try to do to Vasquez what Whitaker did to him.
May I introduce you to...AMIR...KING...KHAAAANNNN
prime pac
Ricky Hatton, that fought Kostya at the light welterweight, Manchester crowd, Paris as ref allowing the low blows, would batter Floyd and win.
Its a part of game so what
??
We're talking fighters in their primes....Ricky ever fight one of those? Oh yeah, Floyd and this happened https://bigsteez.files.wordpress.com...12/82izibn.gif
Now GRANTED that was at 147 which was completely above Hatton's pay grade
Hatton wasn't worthy a fuck at 147. I would have loved to have seen that at 140 - I think it would have been a different outcome!
Hatton is underrated!
Floyd cherry picked his opponents to be honest he is pretty clever maximum payday, for little effort or danger.
Oh certainly....there's little doubt that if boxing had the same system that UFC has and the best fights of the best were made I highly doubt Floyd would still have 0's in the loss and draw columns of his record, but I think he'd still be a great fighter but to me he's never "the GOAT"....The Greatest, the Best of the Best, the Cream of the Crop don't cherry pick their fights.
I find it pretty strange that Somebody who clearly isn't rated by many people , cherry picks opponents, and whose opponents age when Floyd actually doesn't (do people realize Floyd is 2 years OLDER than Pac when they say "Prime Pac"?), can earn over $100 million for a fight .
I mean if he's "not that good" , how does he earn that much ? Is he a Charity? or is the World full of absolute Mugs! ;D;D
and the funny thing is , that one way or another, just about every person that slags him off has probably contributed to his bank balance and are indirectly turning him into legend status by continuing to constantly talk about him over a year after he has actually retired. Because we only do that with average fighters , don't we?
fair play, some people talk Shite!:rolleyes:
Trinidad would not have got near Mayweather - easy UD for Floyd - and I hate the guy
Ray Robinson never fought below welter I don't think, and he was a big guy for that weight. Aaron Pryor spent his whole career at 140 and literally fought nobody outside of two old blown up featherweights.
You can take almost anyone's record and say they cherry picked, fact is Floyd beat a lot of great fighters who went on to have a lot of big wins after the fact. You can only say the same for roughly half of the guys listed on this thread, and they are all great.
I don't agree that he would have gone AWOL.
In his time, Mayweather was far and away the biggest star in boxing PPV views. The vast majority of the buyers are American, and Mayweather was the stand out US fighter in an era dominated by other nationalities.
As the biggest (and only) star, he could fight who he wanted, and the public would buy it.
If Hearns and Leonard were around, he couldn't do that. In fact, Leonard would be the star attraction and could pick terms against Mayweather. Hearns would be a truly dangerous opponent for Mayweather and would probably be his equal in star power.
I do think Floyd was a fighter at heart, and don't agree he would have gone AWOL. He would have had to fight those guys - at lesser pay - to prove his greatness as a fighter.
i have no reason to think that he wouldn't have fought them if he had to, but I'm not convinced he would remain undefeated.
I've met Floyd twice briefly and he was a very nice guy both times!
But the fact is he has a yellow streak from here to Portland Maine and I don't think for a second he'd have gotten into the ring with Tommy Hearns! ;D
By the time Floyd became a star ppv fighter he was light welter and welterweight, some would say past his best, the weight division was not great and he was recognized as the best at the weight eventually.
I think he would have said the A class fighter rubbish to avoid Hearns.
Floyd is a good fighter he did cherry pick simple guys with high milage on the clock.
He basically is a defensive fighter who countets it's his bread and butter,! his fights can be rather boring to watch .
Remember boxing is a sport and it's supposed to be entertaining, Floyd has been in some stinking fights through the years.
He may face a crappy MMA fighter who can't box kipper's,! again maximum profit for very little danger, I would be surprised if McGregor could ko Floyd if he was strapped to a chair.
Floyd is Marmite you love or hate the guy.
Floyd probably wouldn't have gone up to welter if Leonard and hearns were there. He would have claimed to be too small. That isn't a knock on Floyd but the reality that both men were big and skilled. I think Floyd has a better chance against GGG than either of those two.
Think Floyd was an ATG talent/fighter, without a doubt. That being said, agree with those that say Floyd was too small to beat Tommy Hearns or Ray Leonard. That isn't a knock on Floyd, just saying they were too much physically for a guy who started at 130.
Not sure ANYONE knocks Floyd's #%$!! in the dirt, but would match him against the following:
1. Roberto Duran: Formidable blend of savagery, skill, and power proved too much for the larger Ray Leonard in their first fight, would likely cause Floyd fits as well. On the "flip side", Ray fought a stupid fight out of anger, and Floyd was the master at making the other guy fight mad while he remained relaxed. Also, Duran had trouble with fast, master boxers due to slower feet. While I think this fight is extremely close and tough for both, a think the more physical Duran pulls out the decision win.
2. Julio Ceasar Chavez: Jose Luis Castillo was referred to as the "Poor Man's Chavez", and he beat Floyd in their first fight, so imagine what the better, more formidable version would've done!!! Chavez's steady pressure, accurate punches, durability, stamina, strength, and power would've proven difficult to overcome for Pretty Boy. Floyd saved his best performances, however, for his most serious/dangerous challengers, and I don't think this fight would be any different. Think Floyd would take some significant punishment along the way to winning a close decision.
3. Aaron Pryor: Larger fighter who was the epitome of perpetual motion and non-stop punches. Floyd was a master at defense/countering, and Pryor's aggression would've provided numerous scoring and countering opportunities. That being said, Floyd was efficient and economical with his shots and I see Pryor hustling his way to the decision.
4. Meldrick Taylor: Taylor is the one guy I've seen who I feel has the faster hands and feet than Floyd, but tended to be reckless and fight in a Philly style to his own detriment. I think Floyd's discipline and intelligence would win the day in a very tough fight.
5. Sweet Pea Whitaker: Southpaw master boxer/defensive specialist vs orthodox master boxer/defensive specialist. Pea beat better comp in my opinion, while Floyd was slightly better offensively. Not sure I can pick between these two ATGs.
6. Kostya Tszyu: Physically powerful, relentless boxer who had scary power in both hands. Floyd would have some issues in the early rounds but would take over the second half of the fight (after Kostya gassed) for the tough win.
7. Prime Oscar: Jab and size make this a difficult match up for Floyd. If the shot version of Oscar that Floyd fought almost beat him, Prime Oscar would win comfortably. Floyd would make it difficult, have his moments, and take over late, but would come up just short against the bigger man.
8. Prime Mosley: This is a great fight at lightweight. Mosely attacks the body and stays with Floyd through 8 rounds. Floyd's discipline and brilliance in the ring takes over in the championship rounds for a close win.
9. Prime Pac Man: just to please all of the fans who had to wait 5 years too long/late. Closer fight with same result. Floyd still too big and too good to lose to a guy who started at flyweight.
10. Alexis Arguello: Long, lean, classic boxer vs phenom master boxer. Exciting fight throughout, but Floyd proves too good and takes the win.
Roger is a moron. But the smartest thing ever said about boxing was "most people don't know shit about boxing"
This thread gets me thinking about the comparisons between Floyd and SRL.
SRL fought and beat:
Defensive wizard and ATG Wilfredo Benitez.
Knockout artist and ATG Tommy Hearns.
Destruction master and ATG Roberto Duran.
Middleweight king and ATG Marvin Hagler.
No disrespect to Floyd and his own resume, but there are few..... IF ANY fighters out there that can present a resume like that.
