Champion who start boxing latest in life?
I know Kermit Cintron and Deontay Wilder started at 19, which of course is extremely late in boxing years. No doubt the successes they had in the ring were due in large part to their fantastic physical, athletic gifts.
But who was the person who started boxing the latest and became a champion?
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
Carl Froch I believe started late which is why he accelerated his career because he did not have much time and the tournament helped him achieve his goals.

First person that came to my mind as well
I know Rigondeaux had a fantastic amateur career but he didn't turn pro until he was about 30 did he?

Carl Froch is one I didn't know about! And of course a name I neglected to mention was the great SGM!
In the UFC they have a British fighter by the name of Jimi Manuwa who didn't begin training MMA until he was 27 years old. I thought that was a remarkable achievement for him, although he hasn't won a championship yet.

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. debuted as a pro at age 22.
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
28 year old Ray Mercer has to be up there. Dennis Andries turned pro at 23 or 24.

Which explains his knackered knees. Martinez was also a cyclist?
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
Poor Sergio was a sitting duck by the time Cotto got to him. Poor fella!

Look on the bright side, at least it was not Floyd or Canelo otherwise we would never hear the end about how great they were/are.

The thought of little Floyd stinking out an arena by pecking and pawing for 12 rounds at a crippled SGM, and then holding the same title that guys like Hagler, Leonard, Monzon, etc held... thank god we missed out on that! :-X:-X:-X
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
Rocky Marciano started late too I believe. Think he would have preferred to play baseball.

I think rahman didn't even start training for boxing until he was 20, he ended up doing pretty well, sure lewis underestimated him but he did win that fair and square, i guess the rest of his career was fairly average though barring a few nice wins.
martin rogan also started in either his late 20s or early 30s, he wasnt a world champion but he did win the british title i think and won a ud v audley harrison

24 years old. Undefeated Undisputed Heavyweight CHAMPEEEEN.
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
You can't really count guys who were prolific amateurs. Lomanchenko didn't turn pro until he was 25, but winning 2 gold medals and having 400 or whatever fights is clearly a bit more impressive than the first few years and 20 odd fights of most good pros. It's especially true for Cubans, who literally couldn't turn pro until they defected, which could be very difficult and involve leaving everything to chance with no promoter, abandoning their family etc.
Re: Champion who start boxing latest in life?
Does George Foreman still count ;D. You'd think it has to be a situation heavyweights would benefit more at? I'm getting stuck between late starters who had decent run but no title or fully stocked star amateurs who spent early years chasing gold. Rau'shee Warren like, turns pro at 25 and just seems crazy for the near smallest division otherwise. A guy like Laszlo Papp who made debut at 30 yrs old and was literally on verge of title when politics stepped in.
