Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
You always hear of Hagler, LaMotta, and Ali, but a fighter who I think belongs right up there along side them for most iron jaw is The Body Snatcher, Mike McCallum. McCallum was in wars and was never KO'd in 49 fights. He went toe to toe with a prime middleweight James Toney for a draw, beat Seve Collins and Michael Watson, stood up to one of the hardest punchers in history, Julian Jackson (AND knocked him out in only 2 rounds), and at the age of 40, even though getting badly outboxed, went the distance with a prime Roy Jones. If you fought McCallum, you were in for a long nights work.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
pretty solid, he was never Ko'ed but he got knocked down a few times

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
"The Most Underrated Chin in Boxing" is ONE that hasn't been HIT. ;D

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Hopkins & Wright's names spring to mind for me.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Vitali Klitschko's also springs up.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
McCallum is on my list of all-time greats, a steady and disciplined boxer-puncher who was ducked quite a bit when he was in his prime. He didn't have quite the charisma of a few of his contemporaries such as Michael Nunn, James Toney, Julian Jackson or Terry Norris but his record speaks for itself. His style was unique: a well-conditioned outside boxer with a good jab, instead of tying up inside he would throw energetic flurries of body shots when an opponent workd his way inside on McCallum. His great chin served him well on the inside or the outside. I saw many of his fights, all the way from when he was in his prime until he was nearly 40 years old.

Watch the Vazquez fight.... ;)
To my mind Frank Bruno had a great chin.
Before you hang me, watch the Jumbo Cummings (the scene at the end of the first, where the 5' nothing Lawless, is trying to get the 6'4" Bruno back to the right corner, is a sight to behold) or Bonecrusher fights, the man took some serious right hands flush, with no defence or even a reflex flinch, and yet remained on his feet for Cummings, and for an amazing amount of time with Smith.
And he took some serious punches against Tyson, and was only decked once in two fights; and against Lewis.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Maybe emanuel Agustus.. He's pretty much taken everyone the distance and never been badly hurt or out on his feet.. His one stoppage loss was apparently a UD loss, he just lay down for the 10 count at the end because he knew he lost.. Typical clowning for the crowd. Also... Byrd, has a very good chin.. Oliver McCall obviously, but I think that's almost all he's know for so it's not underrated.. And for anyone who hasn't seen this guy, I haven't personally, I swear his chin must be reinforced steel, he's some sort of freak.. Just look at who he has fought, and at what age. It defys everything imaginable.

Winky got rocked by the smaller Shane Mosely in their first fight....
but i think Samuel Peter has one of the best chins at heavyweight in a long time...I mean one of those old school chins....courtesy of his short neck like tyson....also Zahir raheem has a pretty good chin too he took Moralles shots flush....
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Holyfield could take some tremendous shots
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
tyson has one heck of a chin....he took tremendous punishment against lewis and douglas....

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Vitaly Klitschko, Oliver McCall, and Pacquiao I would say had the best ones.
And for what its worth, Naz got knocked down a lot, but it was knocked off balance, I dont recall him ever being seriously hurt, or wobbly.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Tito. Met the canvas a occasionally, but was never hurt seriously. Even when Hopkins put him down, I don't think he was hurt bad, but they stopped it because he was behind, and could have gotten hurt badly.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
I agreed with you up until the Tito not being hurt by Hopkins remark. Are you kidding? Watch that knockdown again. He tried to get up, fell back into the ropes, and barely beat the count of ten, and when he was up had a glazed look in his eyes. Oh, he was definitely done.
And he was arguably even more hurt at the end of rd 10 when Hopkins wobbled him with an uppercut.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Lennox Lewis. Getting knocked out by McCall and Rahman is nothing to be ashamed of. Sure Okinwade dropped him and Briggs stunned him, but it's nothing to be ashamed of Lennox had a great chin. Just watch the Mercer fight. If you judge by the Mercer fight, Lennox had a better chin then Tommy Morrison, who is p4p one of the best Heavyweight chins of all time.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Or maybe Mercer just didn't hit that hard. Dude, if you think Lennox Lewis had a good chin, you're not watching this sport.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Only Rahman and McCall stopped him. No medium or light hitting fighter and he took Rahman's right hands pretty well until that thunder shot sent him drowning in ocean's 11

Still waiting for your source of Judah breaking his hand before the Baldomir fight. Oh that's right, you just made it up, STARR.

Hopkins was hurting him, no doubt. When Tito's dad stopped it, I felt that he could still go on, but it was pointless. I don't think he was hurt that bad, but more discouraged than anything. Up until that point he had, never been in that situation. As far as being wobbled, that wasn't the first time Tito had been stunned, but his balance alot of times, made it look worse.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Thanks for the laugh, "very few people know about it." ;D ;D ;D That's about as believable as Bob Arum calling Rahman one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Thanks for the laugh, STARR.

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
I think Tommy Morrison, He has never been stop by just one punch. I mean everybody just says he has the weakest chin in the universe. If you look at his style, It is custom made to get cracked flush. Also his defense was terrible, But Tommy himself said that a great offense made a good defense . I'm not saying he had the greatest chin by no means, I'm just saying he had a better beard than people gave him credit for. Anyways, I think Pacman, Ibeabuchi, Holmes, Lacy.

TITO!!! No WAy
I have the fight stored on my desktop and when hopkins hits him you can actually see the tweety birds flying in cirlces above his head... he thought he was in disney land....

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Sugar Ray Robinson, his other attributes were just so awsome that his solid chin is often overlooked.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Sugar Ray Leonard....fair enough he was stopped by Camacho but he was way way past his best and in his prime he went in the ring with Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Benitez and wasnt stopped.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
I wouldn't really say Leonard had a great chin, he was floored in his 1st comeback against Kevin Howard & Hearns had him hurt in their 2nd fight, good chin but not great.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Chris Byrd....sounds fruity but he got up from one of the most violent shots ever!
Riddick Bowe?

Lennox Lewis would be an example of a fighter with no chin, he got knocked spark out by two complete bums, there is no way anybody can argue for him having a good chin.
Some of the most solid chins are Eubank, Collins, McCallum, Toney, all 10 out of 10.
Under-rated chins, Ali springs immediately to mind. Put down on a few occasions but always got right back up, unlike Lewis who always stayed down.
Wayne McCullogh was tough as nails too
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Lennox's fight vs Mercer was different than Tommy's. Tommy found out Ray could take pretty much anything he threw at him in 1991 and gased himself out and Lewis NARROWLY outboxed him in 1996!!!
Morrison had a good chin, aside from the Mercer and Bentt KO's he did pretty well. He would go down a time or two but nothing too bad.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
So ar we saying that Morrison getting sparked badly by Bentt and Mercer is OK but Lewis gettting stopped by McCall and Rahman is not?
The thread title is underated chins so McCall Eubank McCallum etc etc have no business being anywhere near it.
How about Nigel Benn? hurting Benn was never difficult, but he came through against some serious punchers.
Lawrence Cley Bey always struck me as having a good chin.
-
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
I'm just saying Morrison is about on par with Lewis....they had decent chins, not anything special....Morrison did get back up off the canvas which Lewis never did (When did Akinwade knock him down? )

Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
If your saying underated then Oscar Larios, he has an IRON chin. Also Lacy, he did take 1007 shots and only sort of go down in the 12th. Eubank and bernard are obvious picks.
