Your favorite musical performances
Like most pianists I've fawned over Glenn Gould since I began playing. He was a strange little fellow but he could sure play the hell out of a piano.
I prefer his 1981 Goldberg variations recordings over his 1956 recordings. He slowed it down a bit and played with more UMPH. Maybe my favorite performance!

Re: Your favorite musical performances
That was nice, I wish I could have learn to play. My nieces are learning and it helps with their mental development that play stations/x box do not seem to do for my boys.
Re: Your favorite musical performances
Ah yes! Nothing wrong with a bit of video games but nicer to learn an applicable skill!
Re: Your favorite musical performances
Valentina Lsitsa playing Liszt's De Paganini Grande Etude No 3
The version she played at the Royal Albert Hall is my favourite, I've heard other people play it but no one gets it anywhere near her version in my opinion.
She's my favourite concert pianist that is around at the moment. This is one of my most listened to tracks of any artist or genre over the past 2 years

She's terrific! Incredible performer!
I'm quite fond of Haochen Zhang as well. Impeccable articulation

Re: Your favorite musical performances
Concert pianists eh? I tend more to the jazz piano players, but whatever.
This little guy can fucking play

Then of course the greats: Oscar Peterson, Count Bassie, Red Garland, Duke Ellington, and Jelly Roll Morton
but you guys like the concert pianists, I guess I'll have to study them.
Re: Your favorite musical performances
There is a Chinese fella called Yundi as well, I'm pretty sure that he does some original stuff but I love his album of Schumann and Beethoven, he attempts the Grande Etudes as well but as I said before it just falls slightly short.
Robert Schumann done a piece called Er Und Sie, I used to have just a piano only version on CD somewhere but that went missing ages ago, the only versions I can find online now have singing over the top of the piano, as much as I love my classical shit I can't stand operatic vocals, I was lucky enough to learn how to play it before I lost it.
Re: Your favorite musical performances
I like Brent midland tickling the ivories on bird song with the greatful dead
Re: Your favorite musical performances
I love the piano, be it concert performances, jazz, or a good piano solo and arrangement in classic salsa.
Some of the piano giants from here are: Eddie Palmieri, Papo Lucca, Richie Ray, Larry Harlow.
Re: Your favorite musical performances
I love the piano talk but I'm talking musical performances in general... can be anything!
I always loved SRV playing after he got off the drugs and got his head straight, shortly before his dead. My dad's from Texas and met SRV and saw him play many a time. So his records were always playing growing up!

Wonderful stuff!! The first number right off the bat was probably my favorite. There was one in there that reminded me of a movie, then I remembered.
"Under Siege"!

That's awesome. Shame I never had the pleasure of seeing him live, he died way too soon. Dad saw him a lot during the Couldn't Stand the Weather era where he'd open with Scuttle Buttin and it'd be insanity from there.
There's something special about those great guitar master/singers through history, Jimi, Clapton, etc.
Re: Your favorite musical performances
I am glad a guitarist is in this thread, George Benson is my personal favourite.

It's all a matter of taste, my friend. Although there are many musical genres native to Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean, my own personal tastes gravitate toward the salsa that was composed and played by bands back in the 70's and 80's mostly. Some of these groups are still around, and I go see them any chance I get. The musicians are awesome, but again... you have to like that sort of thing. Salsa, remember, is very rhythmic, and given the right musical arrangement and composition, it's almost impossible not to dance to. I however enjoy just listening to it and watching old videos.
I would say most anything from groups like Fania All-Stars, a congregation of great salsa musicians from different backgrounds. There's also the hugely popular Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, formed in 1962 and probably PR's most popular band. One of my personal favorites is La Sonora PonceƱa, because of their musical style.
One of my favorite CD/DVDs is from Fania All-Stars' 30th anniversary live perfomance in 1994 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is awesome, and it was gratifying to see so many now older musicians get together for this tremendous event. I saw them live for the first time in 2013, obviously a little long in the tooth by now. ;D ..... but still good.

Re: Your favorite musical performances
If we are going with piano and a bit of voice, I would say this is very nice.

I love this piece,To me it sings of eras past, times in the sun, rainy days looking out the window and the gain in the height of love, then loss. Like summer from beginning to end.

I love Frank Zappa. Such an underrated prolific music genius.
I watched a video of Steve Vai talking about him a few weeks ago, it's an interesting little anecdote for any Zappa fan.

Yes, my favorite as well and I have both versions. His crisp and rhythmic staccato style is makes this performance very enjoyable to the ears. Definitely, this is one of few classical performances that clearly stands out. Even non-classical music lovers would probably enjoy this recording. Try it, the nice rhythmic flow would please your ears.
