Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29 - Live & "FREEEEEEEEE!!!" on SKY SPORTS!!!
When Showtime released its spring boxing schedule, it made note at the end of the announcement that the network was also working on summer fights for Adrien Broner and Mikey Garcia.
Little did anyone know -- including Stephen Espinoza, executive vice president and general manager for Showtime Sports -- that they would face each other. But that is exactly what will happen.
Showtime on Thursday announced that Broner, a former four-division world titleholder, and Garcia, a reigning lightweight titlist, will square off July 29. They will meet in a scheduled 12-round bout at a catch weight of 140 pounds at a site to be determined.
"I always want to fight the best," Broner said on a teleconference with boxing writers to discuss the fight. "I know a lot of people are probably counting me out. I just see two fighters that got chips on their shoulders ready to put on a great show of boxing.
"You've got two guys in their prime, in their highest level of their career right now who want to fight each other, so let's do it."
Garcia said it was the right fight at the right time.
"We had already talked about a possible matchup for later in the year and when we couldn't find anything else available that made sense at lightweight, we looked at the 140-pound division for somebody who could make a big fight, and Adrien Broner's name came up. And, along with Stephen, we were able to look into Adrien Broner and work everything out," Garcia said. "It's the biggest fight we can both get in our careers.
"Broner has lost. I don't lose. I don't believe anyone around my division can beat me and I believe I'm the better fighter."
Garcia will move up five pounds for the nontitle bout, electing to do so because there was no lightweight fight nearly as significant available to him this summer.
"I haven't fought anyone who's been champion in four divisions," Garcia said. "There's no one else available who has that résumé. It's the biggest fight available for me right now.
"Originally, my plans were to unify at 135. If that was not available I'd look for big names to defend my title against at lightweight, but that was not quite available and Adrien Broner is a much bigger name, a bigger star, so it made more sense to go and pursue the Adrien Broner fight than making a title defense.
"I would like to come back down to lightweight and unify or defend my title [after this] before I permanently move up. If unification matches are available at 135, that's what I will do."
Broner was stripped of his junior welterweight world title the day before a defense against Ashley Theophane 14 months ago because he could not make weight, but agreed to return to junior welterweight for the fight.
Broner's last fight, a 10-round split decision in his hometown of Cincinnati against Adrian Granados on Feb. 18, was at the 147-pound welterweight limit. The weight was increased a couple of weeks before the fight because Broner was having trouble cutting weight.
Last week, Espinoza told ESPN that the fight was being discussed, but that weight was a major obstacle and far from being a done deal.
They were able to overcome the weight question by getting Broner to agree to come down to 140 pounds, even though recent photos of him -- as he was being sent to jail for three days last month -- showed that he was clearly not close to that weight.
Broner, who has had numerous legal problems, spent three days in jail in Kenton County, Kentucky, for an outstanding warrant for disorderly conduct from an incident at a bar in 2014.
Garcia said he insisted the fight take place no heavier than 140 pounds and Broner agreed.
"I made it clear I'm still a lightweight," Garcia said. "My best division is 135 and I wouldn't go any higher than 140 pounds with Adrien. I made that clear from the beginning. I'm glad Adrien Broner and his team agreed. I think it's a pretty even match, but I feel I have the edge when it comes to boxing skills, technique, timing and distance."
n the end, Espinoza said it was an easy fight to make.
"Conversations started about a week ago and here we are, a week later, after a holiday weekend, announcing the fight," Espinoza said. "These talented fighters showed no hesitation in doing this whatsoever."
Espinoza said once the fighters realized there was no bigger fight for either of them in the immediate future, it came together quickly.
"Once everyone understood that, it clicked. That's really what got it done. Weight and money melted away," he said. "These are two world-class competitors who want to do the biggest fights possible."
Broner said he is taking the fight seriously and would make the weight with no issue.
"Making weight is not going to be a problem," Broner said. "For my last fight I was coming from 180 pounds. I've kept my weight down. I've kept my body in OK shape. Mikey is a great opponent, a great fighter. As long as I have my A-game I will be OK. I'm taking my career more serious. I'm looking forward to putting on a great fight.
"I have no problem making the weight, just like when I fought for the title and I made the weight easy. Once Adrien Broner is focused and on track nobody can beat me. Only I can beat me. I feel like my back's against the wall."
Espinoza said there would be financial penalty if either fighter is overweight, "but we're not going to get into any details." As far as Broner making weight, Garcia said, "There is some concern but he agreed, his team agreed and he seems confident he will make it."
Broner (33-2, 24 KOs), 27, has won world titles as a junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight while also being one of boxing's most polarizing figures.
Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs), 29, of Moreno Valley, California, one of boxing's pound-for-pound best, has won world titles in three divisions -- featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight. He claimed a lightweight world title with a crushing third-round knockout of Dejan Zlaticanin on Jan. 28 in Las Vegas.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Quite a few good fights this summer and this one I can't wait to see.
Both are the same height according to Boxrec but Broner would be the biggest of the two (will he manage to make weight?).
I'm rooting for García!

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
I can't see Broner making the weight, but I hope he does. Obviously Broner has loads of haters, but credit where credit is due, he never looks for a soft touch to fight, and he's very game.
If he makes weight it should be a great scrap.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Garcia will end his career. Garcia is really good. Broner will get tagged a lot in this fight. Garcia is great at setting up his shots and broner has problems avoiding shots at times. I have a feeling it will turn into broner trying to avoid getting knocked out.
Garcia makes valid points for taking this fight. It's a named fighter who is bigger and would look great on his resume. Also, I'm glad that he still wants to unify at 135.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Not big on Garcia taking the quick fix elevator in rising weight but if any fight will prove it foolish this will be it. Still like Mikey by paint job break down and he avoids the inside work of Broner.

Mikey's camp was rather confident Linares didn't want to fight right now. An exciting win over Broner sort of puts him in a position to call shots with elevated status. Could get us to a Linares fight quicker. At least that's my hope

That would be a great display of boxing. Just don't like the weight on Linares moving up even being a great boxer puncher like he shows. That the plan? If anything Broner is very physical durable and good testing ground for Mikey and good 140 intro. Even though Mikey will prob be fighting a bloated jr middle in Broner ;D
Jarrett Hurd v Trout on undercard!

Garcia says this is a one fight deal at 140 and then he's moving back down to 135. Who knows though. I think Garcia beats Broner in a spectacular display of boxing. He'll make Broner look like the totally one dimensional inside counterpuncher he is and put on a show.
We should have a sweepstake for what weight Broner weights in at first. Apparently there's a big money penalty for missing the weight though so you never know, he might actually make it if he stays out of jail and in camp. Probably the last time we'll see him in a big fight. He must be desperate for money to have signed for Garcia.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Am I alone in thinking Garcia would wipe Linares out and it's not even that interesting a fight? I think he wipes Broner out too, but it's a bit more interesting to me with the weight and Broner being very durable, will tell us whether Garcia will be effective here or even at welter in the near future.

Agreed but I think Linares deserves to beat up some more British fighters and earn some good money before he gets beat by Garcia. :)

Yeh that really sounds like a "play it by ear" approach by Garcia. Not a fan of a guy playing whak a mole jumping around divisions if he has no intention of staying there. Just realized Broner isn't even ranked at 140 but is at 147 :cwm13:. Clearly they have as much difficulty predicting the fat twats next move as he does. I think Garcia stays at 140 off an impressive victory.

I'm not that fussed about them moving up and down in weight so long as they're in good fights. The two best fights for Garcia and arguably in boxing are with Lomachenko and Crawford but they're both with Arum. I wonder just how keen the respective parties actually are to fight each other assuming the promotional issues could be overcome. I'm definitely not going to hold my breath for either fight being made.

You see it the same as me. Bob won't work with him and Linares isn't interested right now so might as well get loads of attention fighting Broner.

I see this as an easy fight for Garcia. Can Broner even make 140 anymore? If Garcia smashes it I see him remaining at 140.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Think this is a great fight and will likely be better than the great one we just watched (Ward vs Kov). Broner HAS to come in shape for this fight, but IF he does, this will be a barnburner. Broner, for all of his faults and big mouth, can fight in the ring. Very strong, solid defense (when he pays attention to it), and good skills with a hard punch. Mikey is a phenom, great all around skills, great punch (at the lighter weights), always in shape and always comes to fight.
If both guys are at their best, I actually give the edge to the larger Broner, but not by much. Love that so many top guys are finally starting to face each other. Right now I'm calling Mikey as the winner, but only because I'm not convinced that Broner will show up in top shape (or even make the weight).

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
I think Garciao can systematically start to pick at broner and build himself a nice comfortable lead on the cards. Anytime broner will look to do something big and enforce his will on Mikey, Mikeys going to lash out and look to brawl. Broner doesn't like finding himself in those situations so he'll back off. That being said, Broner is still fast and big enough at the weight to catch Mikey with a slick counter and put him on his a$$. It's been done before but the question is will Mikey respond the same at this weight... and avoid getting finished off by someone who should be as desperate as broner should be at this stage. The only question for me is if broner catches Mikey like he did shawn porter, can mikey clear the cobwebs and continue.
A few questions is ... Is Mayweather in Mikeys ear spilling broners secrets? Do they use any of the plan maidana used (Not sure if Mikey has the same punch/chin). Does broner come in motivated enough?

He nearly always looks for a soft touch then fights a tough guy when he has to for some big money. Broner is tough and skilled, but he's a cherry picking little bully too. He eeked out his last win over a light hitting hand picked opponent. He's most likely gonna lose against Garcia.

Yes agreed. I think Broner can be abit of a cherry picker so I'm surprised he's taken this fight. He only fought Porter because he thought the catchweight would drain him sufficiently enough which was a miscalculation. & he miscalculated when he fought Maidana thinking he was just a crude Kotelnik leftover. He almost paid the price for looking past Paulie too
Having said all that, credit to Broner for taking this fight assuming it goes ahead. He's fighting a lethal puncher in his prime, no catchweight nonsense etc and 1 more loss will really hurt Adrien at this stage in his career. So he's really testing himself
i think the fight plays out with Broner taking centre ring looking to shoulder roll Mikeys offence but the jabs and body shots will be hurtful & he will soon have to get on his bike. Garcias power will put him in his shell and I think Broner will do well to last the distance & will need to use all his experience to get through the rounds. I'm going with Mikey in a 1sided decision beatdown

Sounds about right. Broner is very hard to stop and durable. I suspect Garcia can stop him late though with a relentless output of combination punching. Bribe tries to fight like he's sparring; throwing 2-3 punches at a time. Often he throws one punch at a time then poses. That is due to arrogance and a lack of stamina.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Garcia's the total package. It'll be entertaining, but Broner won't make it the distance.
Mikey TKO win in 9.

More I think on this one I like Garcia to be the first to get Broner out, probably on his stool after soaking up a game durable amount of punishment. The key and the options are all Garcias and as long as he keeps smart he can actually turn Broners strong suit..that inside work and that stationary set up..against him badly. Broner does a lot of posturing and posing inside and has yet to show he can consistently fight off the backfoot and stay disciplined. Frankly he's also easy to tag with fast right hands, eventually he'll plod in to close distance and Garcia can one step forward-two steps back in the second half and have Broner also eating punches from the basement. 10 yrs in and his biggest win is close with Paulie and 4 trinkets won but I'm hard pressed to name who he beat for them, Broner really has no choice but to take an opportunity like this. Next stop, Stepping Stoneville.

I don't like to label any fighter a quitter and no one knows what they endure but themselves. But much harder fighters with the actual skills to fall back on than Broner have 'opted out'. Eventually it all catches up. Shells crack and Broner may be stubborn but he's already quit on himself before. Be it with a fragile psyche, not training to make weight multiple times, acting like a 15 yr old who still doesn't know how to pull his pants up ^ :-X.

True. And there are different types of quitting. I mean stinking the joint out just trying to see the final bell is a type of quitting. I think that is a more likely quit. If he full on quit I think he would retire.

Robert Garcia got an up close look at him in the Maidana fight and he knows his shit. I think Broner is the absolute perfect opponent for Mikey to put on a real show here and let the world see just how talented he is. I expect a very one sided UD. I'm really looking forward to this one even allowing for the fact that after Maidana and Porter the enjoyment in watching Broner lose has decreased a lot.
Another good question. Why the hell is Broner on the left hand side of the poster in this promotion? Broner really has more star power than Garcia?

Robert Garcia got an up close look at him in the Maidana fight and he knows his shit. Sadly Broner gets better ratings than anyone. He is somehow the top non PPV draw.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
Broner is being way overlooked here IMO, he's a great bet at around 4/1 (as long as he's properly trained/focused). For all his faults he's lost twice to monster pressure fighters yet still made the finishing line - and was able to stun both. Garcia doesn't have a size advantage, is not a pressure fighter nor does Broner have a style that will make it easy for him.
Garcia looked terrific against Zlat, but that win has flattered him a bit, he was electric against a fella that, with hindsight, was a sitting duck.
For context - Ten Pin has the same chance of beating Garcia as knuckle dusters does beating Floyd. Yes, you've read that right.

Broner also should have lost to Granados. Garcia can put on the pressure when necessary. I think that Garcia is better than any version of Broner, but I would give Broner more of a chance a few years ago when he first moved up to welter and was still in his prime.

Re: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia July 29
This is all about Broner and what shape he's in, or more to the point, how serious he's gonna take this and indeed his career.
when he's in the ring , he's tough and shows a lot of heart and guts, that's not the problem.
his problem is what he does outside the ring. I don't think the bookies odds are stacked against Broner because Garcia is seen as that much better, I just think that they don't trust Broner to come in shape and do it right.
If there was a guarantee that Broner conditioned himself right and was in shape, the odds would probably be the other way around.
