Santa Cruz vs Avalos ~ Mares vs Gutierrez on FOX

PBC with some trickery again as this is listed live right now on FOXdeportes and again live on FOX regular tonight at 10:30 pm? Guess they are trying to avoid running into the Showtime card but looks like this card is starting. Odd time, Spanish channel and the Stub Hub stands are literally empty :-X but lets see what happens.

Antonio DeMarco facing 17-0 Eddie Ramirez to start. Last couple time I've seen DeMarco he was talking retirement and it lasted all of 14 months. Be interesting to see what he has left or if they just trucked him in as a stepping stone.

Cruz has an easy night but Mares might have some trouble

Abner Mares next up with 35-1 (25) Andres Gutierrez who was the guy set for Frampton few months ago but broke his teeth in the shower, cut himself and had to pull out??? Personally have no interest in a Mares-Santa Cruz rematch so wouldn't mind the 'upset' ;D.

Appeared Gutierrez round one, hard to tell unless they leave the ringside cam up only. When shot up close cannot distinguish shit! Oh Gutierrez cut up on left eye in 2nd.

Mares really working hard one twos in 3rd and tenderizing the face of Gutierrez, who now looks nicked right eye. Mares boxing very well.

Yeah Mares looks good and he’s dominating so far. Can’t see anything changing unless he picks up a freak injury

Lots of clinching in 4th when Gutierrez rushes in, Mares warned for head butt and unleashes at rounds end with good shots. Better pressure and effect from Gutierrez middle of 5th. Getting much closer just not cutting him off yet. Nice exchange in corner ends the round.

Much closer 6th good action. Fights being aired in Benny Hill skit speed tonight FFS. Mares back on point in 7th controlling distance, punch and get out.

He's really turning it up in 8th just bouncing punches off Gutierrez who doesn't seem to have much of a plan B. Cut(s) have really opened up now

Wish they’d stop this one not because it needs to be stopped but because it’s predictable. Mares is schooling him but doesn’t have the power to finish things

Be surprised if doctor doesn't step in over in corner, looks like someone took box cutter to that left eye. Why'd that break feel like only 10 seconds. Like to see Mares force it a bit and ref will help out.

Not sure who Avalos people are paying to get him a crack at Santa Cruz and title but if any fighter deserves 'soft touch' it's Santa Cruz. Be interesting to see if he reverts to windmill form after boxing so smart vs Frampton last out.

Santa Cruz gunning for a ko over 2 and Avalos already warned twice for head and holding. Left hook of Santa Cruz has come some way. Avalos goes to body and Santa Cruz eggs him on. Nice pace so far

Santa Cruz has put the boxing and anything resembling defense on the back burner tonight, here in 4th looks like a buzzsaw all over again and landing big on Avalos. Avalos hanging in though but starting to unravel and feeling it to body..

No reason for this fight to go much longer

Honestly that looked more a favor done for convenience for favorites, now very nice combo by Santa Cruz but if we stop fights based on 'it was a matter of time' why even let them leave the Hotel room. Still Santa Cruz ended it on form

I missed almost all ofht e first fight but the guy's face was burger meat and he was totally outclassed. It probably could have been stopped hours earlier.

Mares looked very sharp. I was surprised at how sharp he looked. Gutierrez has a good chin though and never looked hurt. I don’t know about the cut being caused by a headbutt though. It seemed like the cut was just opened slowly throughout the fight by getting punched.

Santa Cruz looked a little rusty but pretty normal still. Not a great stoppage but I can understand the reasoning. Avalos wasn’t going to win and just kept taking hard shots.

I’m excited for a Mares vs Santa Cruz rematch though. If Mares can box and not get into a brawl he has a good chance at winning.

I also really like Sergio Mora as a commentator. He does a good job at explaining what’s going inside the head of a fighter and other little intricacies about being in the ring. I wouldn’t mind him moving up to the big leagues.

The Doc or the corner should have stopped the Guiterrez fight. If you dropped anything but avitene into that it would echo. Mares may have been made to look sharper than he was without having to worry about what was coming back at him, but he put his work together with some style, and looks ready to reset and go again for a place at the top table after that. Santa Cruz did what he had to and can't be blamed for a weird stoppage in a fight that he pretty much bossed.

Ye me too. Going on this weekends fights Id fancy Mares. Never was sold on LSC. Thought he was very one dimensional previous to the Frampton rematch. I think someone like Selby would beat him easily.

Yes, I like Demarco, but he got a gift stoppage there after hurting the young gun. He may well have been on his way to stopping the kid anyway but we will never know from that super early stoppage.Mares and Santa Cruz looked very good. Had limited but very tough guys in there to make them look good.
