Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
Has Joe met the standard to be considered the best supermiddleweight champion ever, if he hasn't what do you think has to do to be considered the best ever at his weight class. I believe he has already proved himself at that weight undefeated, unmarked, so much skill. As we all proclaim Roy Jones to be one of the greatest even though many question his opposition, Joe just like Jones was beating people that were available to him at the time, and with his career defining win over lacy I think he has solidified his position and move up in weight. sure roy and Joe could have faced each other and enhanced each other's career but the match wasn't meant to be for an assortment of reasons, few of Joe's making and some of roy's
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
In terms of his time and unbeaton run at 168, he is arguably the best, but in terms of the best boxer ever to grace one 168 it has to be RJJ without a doubt and in his day i think he would beat Joe Calzaghe quite comfortably over 12 rnds.
Joe has beat no legends of the fight game, fighters who have been regarded as the best in the business at sometime or other in there career, RJJ has beat two or three legends of the game in James Toney, Bernard Hopkins and Mike Mccallum.
Joe's best wins have been against Eubank and Lacy.
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
well we shouldn't use would haves and could haves in analyzing someone. yes I would also favor jones to win over joe in their primes but when you have two guyz with so much skill in the ring you never know what might happen, also both of their key asset was their speed plus with joe being a southpaw and roy saying after the fight with tarver that fighting southpaws is always a problem for him we will never know how the fight would have fared. Joe definetly had the skills to pull a Schmelling-Louis 1 or Robinson-Lamotta 1
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
Compare their trophy cabnets!! What has Joe got in his?
WBO and a recently aquired IBF from a young and raw Lacy.... mmm... potential was always there but time is not on his side. Not even in the same ball park! how many defences do you think Jones could of made of one belt? A boxer has to seek greatness it doesnt find him.

Ok then where would you put him and who would you put ahead of him??
The way you put your sentence together, you seem to think he is way down the list, he is top three no doubt, it's how you see the best 168 Joe has fought there 41 times and is undefeted RJJ had seven fights, so there is strong arguments for Joe in that respect. But there is only RJJ and boring Ottke who come anywhere near.

RJJ had seven fights? What strong arguement?

RJJ had 7 fights at 168, Joe Calzaghe has had 41 thats more or less six times the amount of fights RJJ has had at the weight, so there's the strong argument for Joe to be ahead of RJJ as the best 168 there has ever been.

Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
look at this video of roy and tell me joes better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXdBK...ch=roy%20jones
you simply can't
jones was the best. i don't care if jones had 1 fight at supermiddle he still was in middle weight making him the best ever. you see great and best are two different things jones never Archived much compared to other great fighters but he would have beaten them all. its that simple.
you see robinson was greatest but jones would have beaten him at middle or super middleweight.
pound for pound he would have beaten all comers.
baby

Well it's not that simple, is it?? Or we wouldnt be having this arguement!!
RJJ is more talented than Calzaghe, but is debatable to say he was the best 168.
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
ok fair enough
who would have beaten jones at 168lbs
be truthfull
no one
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
168 is a relatively new division and that makes it difficult to judge who is the best...were their lightheavies or "middle weights" that would have competed at 168 had the division been around? More than likely
Joe MIGHT be considered the best since he's had 40+ fights there
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
It is arguable IMO and Joe is great. I just think RJJ was on another level to anyone thats ever fought at super middle.
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
I think it's clear that Roy Jones was the greatest ever to pass through the super middleweight division but Calzaghe has had more title defenses there than anyone else and has owned the division for 8 years so I have no argument against him being considered the greatest supermiddleweight.

I agree, on acheivement at the weight he's definitely number 1.

Just because someone looks impressive in some fights doesn't necasarily mean he would look just as impressive against a different fighter who has different attributes. Many people looked at footage of Lacy and thought he would destroy Calzaghe, if they hadn't fought these people would still have the same opinion now. Many people thought Shane Mosely was untouchable until he fought Vernon Forrest.
IMO RJJ would definitely be favourite against Joe, but it wouldn't be a walkover. With Joe's hand speed and workrate he may well have been the the guy to pose most problem's to him, it's a shame we'll never know the definite answer.

Before anyone says Kessler, this guy is am untested fighter, so if Joe does a job on him i cant really seeing it doing anything to his legacy unless Kessler comes back bigger and better.
Im quite certain that Joe will be fighting at 175 in July.
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
Both RJJ and James Toney rank above Joe Calzaghe as some of the best super middleweights of all time. They constantly fought the best and usually won, Joe is in the top 5 but i wouldn't say HE IS the best

Steve Collins but RJJ wanted nothing of him.
Re: Is Joe the best supermiddleweight ever?
::** RJJ would have beat the shit out of Collins, it would have been gross, seriously.

No Joe would lose badly against Roy who was extremely good against southpaws until his reflexes slowed down... He beats Joe 9/10 times prime for prime

because if he loses against lets say Markus Beyer and Kessler, everyone would say that he was just a good fighter rather than a great one. Similar to Chris Eubank, if he beat Collins and retired he would of beyond doubt of been the greatest SM of all time.
As i said Skel, time will tell. ;)
