ESPN2 Ryan Garcia v Jayson Velez - O'Sullivan v Abreu

Set for Friday night with a local 9:30 pm start. Really like the quick turn around with young 14-0 Garcia who is being groomed for super stardom in the mold of Oscar. Long way to go but this is a quality step up all things considered with 26-4-1 Velez who is coming in off a complete destruction of the ghost of Juanma Lopez. This should be a fun one as long as it lasts.

In co main Spike O' Sullivan gets an apparent doormat opponent in Berlin Abreu 14-1. Abreu is a welterweight who hasn't fought in a year and a half. His opponents win-loss record is pretty shocking...53-249. Definitely wouldn't get up and go to the fridge during this one :fight:. Considering he was in the GGG sweepstakes was hoping Oscar could line up a sterner test but lets see.

Good main event. A great step up for Garcia. Velez is a good solid fighter. If Garcia can beat him, he at least proves to be a legit fighter.

Kid kind of strikes me a little bit Victor Ortiz ;D. He's already calling KO rounds and thinking he belongs with Davis. Walk then run young man.

O'Sullivan should have his way here. Thinking the handlebars on that Stache won't even be messed.

All Spike in 1st. Abreu lets loose and backs him momentarily early 2nd. Spike is going heavy on Abreus body, both hands.

Here comes the rain. Spike stepping it up and knocking Abreu both directions in 3rd. Abreu spits his piece to get breather and has point deducted.

Time for Spike to settle a bit and close this out.

Velez better not get sucked up in this production. Looks asleep before the bell! I can see two complete different scenarios...Garcia blows him out with speed or Velez takes him to school after early damage.

Velez has distance closed and initiating exchanges, Garcia has a bad look when he backs and covers up. Very nervous head high mouth open. Velez round.

Best burst by Garcia mid 2nd but mainly singles. Nice 3 punch combo and Velez stumbles end of round. Velez leaning and lurching wide more. 1-1 even up.

Best hope for Velez is stepping in with left hook keep is close, Garcia backs straight and waits there. On the very end Garcia is catching him constantly. Velez shook last minute of 3rd and looks out of sorts.

Was he really working at a fast food chicken joint before Lopez win? Man that's rough. Better mobility by Garcia and doesn't always cut loose with openings. Velez legs looking very heavy lunging in. 3-1 Garcia

Garcia definitely has some refining to do. FFs lower that head ;D. Rips off nice combos last minute of 6th moving Velez back hard. Velez face is falling apart. Like to see Garcia start coming forward a bit.

If anything decent win but even better learning experience for Garcia. Certainly cannot say Velez 'ran' after all the stuff Garcia was talking. Come down to Earth a bit. I have 98-92.

Judges in at 99-91. Fat Dan had a shut out, of course he did. Some crowd booing him in interview damn :-X. Both respect at end and credits Velez. Hope he (GBP) gets all that "social media sensation" nonsense out of his head and settles down. Definitely has some skill

Good solid win by Garcia, but I don’t see anything super special about him. I just don’t think he will turn into anything special. I get that he’s young, but most of the time you can tell even at a young age how good someone will be.

Wait until his little brother "Sugar Rush" turns 18 in October and signs with GBP. They were just practicing with Kingry.

Definitely has some skill but has some flaws to iron out. This was a nice learning fight for him.

Garcia doesn’t seem to have enough offensive attack to be an elite fighter. He counters well but has problems with setting up his own offense. Again, I understand that he is young, but at this age you can generally tell about how good someone will be.

Good win over a rugged guy in Velez. Felt bad hearing that he worked at a fast food place n was once a world champ. Tank Davis would be too much for Garcia right now.

That's a good way to put it. He's mainly offensive off the counters and even when Velez was reeling he sat back and only fought in spurts. I worry most with the way they seem determined to push the whole 'social media sensation' bs and fill his head with all this superficial be the next Oscar stuff. When's the last time announce teams focused on Instagram and FB stats :p. Charisma is great but fundamentals and a level head are far better investments.

Robert Diaz of GBP saying that Garcia is not ready for a title shot, saying may wait until he's 21 and more developed with added experience before a title run. Makes sense, lets see if that's true.
