Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
Eddie Hearn is throwing his hat into the U.S. streaming arms race.
The British promoter’s American initiative, Matchroom Boxing USA, is set to announce on Thursday in New York a major streaming partnership with the fledging service DAZN, multiple sources with knowledge of the deal told THE RING.
It’s a four-year deal with a four-year option, and the plan calls for Matchroom Sport to stream 40 fight cards per year. Sixteen of those will be staged in the U.S., with the other 24 taking place in the U.K., where Hearn resides as the most prominent promoter in the market.
Each fight card Matchroom Boxing USA streams is expected to carry a seven-figure license fee, which will ostensibly allow DAZN (pronounce Da Zone) to compete with HBO, Showtime and ESPN as a fourth major player in the American boxing landscape. Hearn didn’t return a text message seeking comment from THE RING.
It was announced earlier Tuesday that former ESPN president John Skipper accepted a position with Perform Group as the sports media company’s executive chairman. Perform Group owns DAZN, and also the longtime publication Sporting News, which is now digital only.
DAZN has been referred to as the Netflix of Sports, and just last year, it expanded into Canada boasting exclusive NFL streaming rights. Skipper’s appointment indicates they plan to enter the U.S. market and begin gobbling up TV rights stateside.
Most major American sports leagues are already aligned with a network, and that’s where boxing comes in. Hearn’s stable, headlined by Anthony Joshua, could be DAZN’s first key acquisition, though Joshua is unlikely to appear on the platform. The heavyweight champion, and boxing’s biggest global star, rakes in piles of money as a pay-per-view attraction in the U.K.
The large license fees Hearn will be armed with should help him sign American fighters to compete on DAZN. Hearn signed Daniel Jacobs last year to spearhead Matchroom Boxing USA, but the middleweight contender is currently aligned with HBO. DAZN also figures to finally allow U.S. fight fans to watch Matchroom’s fights that are televised on Sky Sports in the U.K.
Hearn has since staged two fights under the Matchroom Boxing USA banner, both headlined by Jacobs in New York, and each featuring heavyweight contender Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller on the televised undercard. Jacobs outpointed Maciej Sulecki on April 28 in the most recent show, and after testing the waters, Hearn is ready to expand.
There’s a slew of Al Haymon-managed fighters who are promotional free agents, and the British promoter has his eye on many of them, according to sources, with fighters like Jermell Charlo, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter among the targets.
The development comes on the heels of the direct-to-consumer app, ESPN+, which offers Top Rank’s stable of fighters in live fights for $4.99 a month. ESPN launched the app last month, and showed its first fight shortly thereafter with Amir Khan-Phil Lo Greco, a Matchroom Sport show.
That was a minor fight, but ESPN+ is set to ramp up its offerings, beginning with Terence Crawford’s welterweight title challenge of Jeff Horn on June 9. Many more shows are ticketed for ESPN+ in addition to shoulder programming set to debut this week ahead of the Jorge Linares-Vasiliy Lomachenko fight on Saturday in New York.
DAZN usually costs about $20 a month, but it’s unclear at this time what the price-point will be when it debuts stateside. For now, one thing is clear: Hearn is ready to flex his muscle in America.

Sky Sports will broadcast 16 live and exclusive fight nights a year from the United States as part of a new deal with long-term partners Matchroom Boxing.
The new agreement means that, in addition to the best of British boxing, Sky Sports viewers will enjoy fights from some of the biggest names in boxing from some of the most iconic venues across America, with more access to fighters, exclusive interviews, blogs and podcasts, available across all Sky Sports platforms.
Fight nights will be scheduled to begin at 6pm US time, meaning the action will kick off at 11pm in the UK when fights are scheduled on the East Coast. Up to six fights will be scheduled on every bill.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
Somehow everything is going to have to run together. You can’t expect fight fans to get HBO, Showtime, ESPN+ and now this new Hearn thing. I love the idea of it, but we need to get rid of HBO and Showtime and pay specifically for boxing fights.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
HBO and Showtime can't compete with this long term, this is the future of Sports viewing just like Netflix or Amazon Prime is for Movies and Boxsets.
Eddie Hearn is gonna sign up all the best fighters in the world and has the budget and platform to do so.
This is HUGE news for the future of Boxing and this is an 8 year deal that will simply blow the competition out the water in time

I really hope so. It would make boxing much more accessible and more fights around the world accessible.

Sounds good as long as the right fights are made

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
Wilder, Spence. Garcia, Charlo, Thurman.....
These are just a few of the fighters from the US that currently are not tied to any promotional deals so i'd expect Hearn to sign up the majority of these in the coming weeks.
Also Anthony Joshua is now a free agent in the US and Dazn/Perform Group will simply outbid any other US offers and snap him up as well (I'd be amazed if that isn't announced soon)
Hope Hearn signs up Wilder too so the fight gets made
If your a World class fighter and a free agent you'd be a fool not to wanna be a part of this especially knowing they have more finance to throw at fights than HBO and Showtime combined.
Hearn has just moved the goalposts big time

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
Mick Hennessy and Channel 5 boxing will be their main competitors.

Seems like the only way Wilder can get Joshua and the only way Charlo can get Jacobs. Because Eddie has been vocal about wanting both. Hopefully it greases the wheels, rather than becoming a roadblock

I hope it works out sweet.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
We really need this in the us. I had showtime and hbo for boxing but got tired of paying 30 bucks a month and waiting for the occasional boxing match. I watch them on YouTube but you guys know watching live boxing is a different feel.

“We have seen in music with Spotfiy and TV with Netflix and Amazon that people will pay a sensible amount of money for a good service,” said the Perform chief executive, Simon Denyer. “We want to be a Netflix for sport.”
Denyer said the company has the financial firepower to be a real threat. He adds that when the hugely anticipated heavyweight fight between Joshua and Deontay Wilder is finally scheduled, it intends to out punch HBO and Showtime for the exclusive US rights – which would be a mammoth coup. “If the fight happens we want to show it on DAZN and have a significant budget to negotiate it to get it on the platform,” he said.

If they could get that fight on there, it instantly becomes legit. I hope it works out.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
So you just download a streaming application and pay for each individual show?
Sounds like Now TV but did not think they had enough clout to beat HBO and Showtime.
-
Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
No it's exactly like Netflix where you get a 1 month free trial then you pay as you go per month so no contract at all.
This benefits the UK consumer too as we get all of Matchrooms US fights live on Sky Sports
Sky has sealed a rights deal with Matchroom Boxing that will allow the UK pay-television broadcaster to show the promoter’s US fight nights.
Sky will show 16 fight nights per year on a live and exclusive basis. The length of the deal was not disclosed.
Up to six bouts will be scheduled on each bill.
In 2015, Sky struck a deal to show 20 nights of UK boxing per year under a five-year deal with Matchroom to run from 2016 to 2021.
Last week, Matchroom announced an eight-year deal with digital sports media specialist Perform Group that will lead to the creation of a US-based joint venture, Matchroom Boxing USA.

Boxing news: Mikey Garcia’s brother reveals Eddie Hearn and Dana White promotional battle
MIKEY GARCIA is a wanted man, says his brother Robert, revealing he has been sent lucrative offers from both UFC head honcho Dana White and Matchroom US boss Eddie Hearn, who recently signed a $1bn content deal with US streaming giant DAZN.

Surprised no one has mentioned about Broner calling out Eddie for the 'slave contract' that he offered him.
$6.75 million for 3 fights

Dip stick should not even use the term. That is a good offer for the idiot.
AJ wants the Wilder fight in the UK, so much for taking over the USA.

That is a great offer for Broner. Averaging over $2 million a fight for being just a pretty good fighter is awesome.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
The problem Hearn is gonna have is that every fighter and manager knows he's got 1 Billion Dollars to play with and only a fool would take his first offer, the other problem he's got is where does he draw the line in a business sense of when to stop upping his offers.
I'd be rubbing my hands together if i was an out of contract top fighter who Hearn has shown interest in ;)

Exclusive: Eddie Hearn's 'Netflix of Boxing' venture boosted by billionaire backer Sir Len Blavatnik
Eddie Hearn has been riding the crest of a wave with the rise of heavyweight Anthony Joshua but his meeting with billionaire Sir Len Blavatnik has raised his motivation and expectations even further.
Hearn has signed an agreement with Blavatnik's Perform Group in the USA for the steaming service DAZN, an all-sport platform which started two years ago, with the aim to bring a new wave of boxing to the United States.
Hearn told The Sunday Telegraph: “The meeting was fascinating. Myself and AJ went to his house in Kensington, next to Prince William. It was quite an experience.
“It was a wow moment. We’ve all seen nice houses, but it wasn’t the house, it was the way he spoke. The passion about the project, his vision and his financial aggressiveness. He has a plan and it’s working.
"He’s a hugely knowledgeable man and is someone who makes you feel like this is going to work, and it doesn’t matter what it takes.
"He saw the vision with Spotify and now has a huge amount of investment in the Perform Group. He just looked us in the eye and said 'You know this is going to work, don’t you? Trust me'.
“He sees the future, he’s seen the future of broadcasting. And it’s not just him, ESPN have done the same thing.
"Showtime and HBO are working on their digital services. Look at Netflix, they’re worth more than Disney. They’ve for 140 million subscribers worldwide. His plan is to be the Netflix of sport. When you’re as aggressive as he is, and when you have the pockets he has – I would back him every day of the week.
"I don’t see this as a risk for us, I see this as an opportunity. Jumping ship to DAZN is not a risk, it’s a reward. Fighters will see that as time goes on. They pay more money than anyone else and are with the best promotion in the world and on a platform that will drive up your profile and invest in you.”
As well as Joshua's triple title defence against Russian Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium on September 22 being broadcast on the DAZN platform in the USA, Hearn's first forays in the United States will be two shows in Chicago on October 6 and in Boston on October 20.
The shows include world title fights with British and Irish fighters Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Johnson and Katie Taylor, as well as Hearn's new American signings. It has even led to talks with fighting legend Manny Pacquiao, in a bid to sign the fighting politician.
Hearn said: “The most important thing for us when we selected our US partner was a huge budget and a huge number of dates.
"Matchroom and DAZN have to be in synergy. We’re similar because we’re both cool, high tech and penetrating a huge audience. We want to keep within the traditional nature of the sport, but we want to be new too.
“We have a huge job ahead of us because we’re up against it and people want to see us fail. It’s easy to mug Matchroom and DAZN off. But if you’ve got the balls to move away from the traditional platforms, you’ll be rewarded in spades."
Blavatnik may not be a boxing connoisseur, but he understands its entertainment value.
“He knew who Anthony Joshua was, obviously. They want to see huge nights and huge fights on their platform. They know it will take time, but it’ll happen sooner rather than later.”

Tevin Farmer seems like the latest guy to sign a co-promotional contract with Hearn. Looks like he'll face Tennyson next.

Sounds like Canelo has struck a deal with DAZN to show the Fielding, as well as his future fights.

So DAZN has AJ and Canelo now, that was quick.

Re: Eddie hearn set to announce major u.s. Streaming partnership with dazn
That's some equalizer to the latest Showtime deal.
This is what DAZN needed just one massive PPV star in the USA and the rest of the free agents will come running now.
Mega signing by Hearn.

DAZN isn't PPV either so they must have paid Canelo/GBP a shitload of $$$$ for this deal which is a multi fight deal.
Press conference later today.

I just read that De La Hoya has done a direct deal with DAZN and completely bypassed Hearn/Matchroom.
To be honest it doesn't make much difference it's just very good news for DAZN and anyone associated with them.
You can basically get DAZN for a whole year for a little bit Less than one Canelo PPV on HBO.

So a 5-year, 11-fight, record-setting $365M (minimum) contract. Pretty sweet. @TitoFan will be so happy for Canelo.

11 fights, roughly 2 fights a year as usual. Hard to keep him away from challenges over that length of time.

This is HUGE
Alvarez's deal is the richest athlete contract in sports history, eclipsing the 13-year, $325 million agreement that New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton signed in 2014 when he was with the Miami Marlins.
