Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Good fight, but I’m really hoping that they man up and the winner fight Spence or Crawford.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Yea it is a good match up between 2 to contenders. Hard one to pick for me. I'm thinking Danny G takes a close one with t he slightly cleaner work. This should be a fun fight.

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Thurman to fight the winner I assume.

If Thurman ever returns, that would be the logical fight to make.

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
And then Thurman will do another elective surgery for an “injury”. Another surgery with a 6 week recovery that will take over a year.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
I really hope the winner doesn’t fight Thurman. When is Thurman coming back anyway?
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Apparently he just started training again. I would imagine it'll still be a few months before we see him in the ring again.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
I'm not sure if Thurman's heart and hunger are still fully in the game. Sure he'll return for a tune up, then probably a cash out fight with the biggest money he can get.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Imagine being Thurman sitting there having your corns filed and nails painted watching your two biggest wins now fight for the belt you walked away from. Still..no return date. I think something bigger is going on with him but cannot put my finger on it. I've come around on Garcia a bit. Porter will do his physical bulldozer Billy goat impression but Garcia with the crisper cleaner work and hope he lets his hands go.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Thurman just got married, had a bit of money behind him and had a bit of a taste of the high life. Hard to go train for 3-4 months, risk your life, when you can have things relatively easy.

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
It is blatantly obvious that Thurman wanted no part of Spence. I have no idea what he will do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes a time up then loses a close decision to the winner of the Garcia and Porter fight then retire. He doesn’t want to get embarrassed by Spence or Crawford.

I tried telling Master that like 3 years ago. Some day he'll start to listen.

Thurman was otherwise engaged beating better and bigger fighters at the time. :)

To be fair the Garcia fight was a unification, but he only just scraped by Porter.

Ronnie conveniently forgets these things with his hate of all things Thurman.

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Thurman did fight some good fighters, but he wasn’t willing to fight Spence. Plain and simple. Thurman fought both Porter and Garcia which were legit fights. I just doubt that Thurman ever fights Spence.

I don't see it. He's watching the division literally pass him by and seems perfectly content to do so. I see he got married, that's great. But stop popping off about "he's never faced a fighter like me" when the ring is the last thing on your mind.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
His has stuttered his career momentum, he was at the top of the hill but now is kind of irrelevant. And he's talking a comeback fight or 3? He can still make at least 1 big payday but I feel he is no longer in the mix at the top of the division, as we don't know when he'll be back and what he'll look like.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
The more I think about Thurman, the more strange I think his antics have been. He was known as the man at welter and many “experts” had him in their top 5 p4p (I never had him that high). Then he completely ducks the up and coming fighter and becomes irrelevant by not fighting.
It’s weird because he now has to earn HIS shot at Spence or Crawford. Not the other way around.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Thurman was named champion emeritus by the WBC, so he can technically demand a shot at the title when he wants.
I personally think he wants to go the route of Bradley and get an announcing position.

I didn't forget anything. You didn't say he fought bigger fights. You said "better and bigger fighters" so I asked what better or bigger fighter he has beaten. I'll ask again, what better or bigger fighter has he beaten?

Even when he got to the top he didn't prove he was the top guy by beating the other best guy. Or even best guys. May, Pac, didn't beat them. The other next top guy Brook, didn't beat him. Thurman was named the top guy by beating more of the 2nd tier than Brook. That hardly proves you are actually top. Brook would have jumped at a Garcia fight just like everyone else does if he got the chance. And Brook would have beaten Garcia too. Probably more clearly than Thurman did also. I'm not saying that Brook necessarily beats Thurman, we don't know because they didn't fight.

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Retiring undefeated if your Keith Thurman means nothing if you don’t fight the best in your weight class.
Thurman just gave away the best belt out of the four and continues to sit on the sidelines until Spence fights Crawford or moves up to 154..fighters like this should be fined for refusing to fight the best and blow minor elbow injuries out of proportion that should keep you out of action for a maximum of 8 weeks!
Garcia beats Porter then hopefully Spence vs Garcia end of the year or Feb 2019..

So you are saying at the time 5’7 Shawn Porter was bigger, 5’8 and 1/2 Danny Garcia was bigger than the 5’9 and 1/2 Errol Spence? Or you are saying they were better at the time?

Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Better and bigger in terms of names at the time.

That would be under better fights, not better fighters. I was very clear about the distinction. Because when you put better and bigger together, nobody thought Porter or Garcia was better. Not even Porter or Garcia
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
Referee may have his work cut out. Garcia SD.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
If Porter can keep from getting wreckless, I can see him pulling out a close win.
He has been hurt before, so Danny may be able to catch him.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
I predicted Porter, but would be happy to be wrong. I just think Porter's swarming style is all wrong for Danny.

Danny maybe able to deal with Porter's pressure better than Thurman did, but only slightly in my opinion.
This fight is so close and hard to pick for me.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
I fancy Garcia's crisper shots, especially as he should get a read for his left hook as Porter is constantly charging in. Good matchup.
-
Re: Garcia vs Porter on Sept 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight belt
It really is a hard fight to pick. Garcia has such problems with pressure fighter and Porter is pressure to the extreme. But at the same time, Porter easily gets caught with counters which is Garcia’s specialty. I picked Garcia but I’m not confident.

@Master fancy a good old fashioned date night for this one?
I'm thinking about staying up for it.

it'll be like old times :bananasex:
