Amazon slammed for ‘insult’ tax bill in the UK despite record profits
Amazon disclosed in a filing that its corporate tax bill in Britain was around £4.6 million last year, almost half the £7.4 million it paid in 2016.
The company says it has paid all taxes required in the U.K. and every country that it operates in.
An anti-tax avoidance advocacy group based in the U.K. criticized the lower tax payment, calling it an "insult."
Amazon has been criticized for paying less corporation tax in the U.K. in 2017 than it did the previous year.
The tech giant disclosed in a filing Thursday that its corporate tax bill in Britain was around £4.6 million ($6 million) last year, almost half the £7.4 million ($9.6 million) it paid in 2016. The amount actually paid was just $1.7 million, due to tax deferrals. Amazon says it has paid all taxes required in the U.K. and every country that it operates in.
The filing was made by Amazon U.K. Services Ltd, a division of the company devoted to warehouses and logistics operations. It also showed that the e-commerce firm's pre-tax profits in the U.K. leaped from about £24.3 million to almost £72.4 million.
Amazon as a whole posted its highest ever quarterly profit last week, reporting a net income of $2.5 billion. It marked the third consecutive quarter in which the company surpassed $1 billion in profits.
In Britain, corporations are required to pay 19 percent of their profits in tax. The government wants to lower this to a rate of 17 percent by 2020.
The Tax Justice Network, an anti-tax avoidance advocacy group based in the U.K., criticized the lower tax payment, calling it an "insult."
"It clearly shows that our global tax system is fundamentally broken and needs urgently fundamental reform," the organization told CNBC via email. "Otherwise, small and medium enterprises will be ruined at the expense of global players who are most aggressive in pushing down their tax rates and controlling ever more market share."
The activist group said large multinational firms should be forced to report their financial activities on a country-by-country basis.
A spokesperson for Amazon said in statement: "Corporation tax is based on profits, not revenues, and our profits have remained low given retail is a highly-competitive, low margin business and our continued heavy investment."
Amazon has around 27,000 employees in the U.K and it grants full-time staffers share awards, which the company says reduce its tax liability. Amazon's share price has increased 84 percent in the past two years.
The news could embolden critics of Amazon who claim the firm and other tech giants are not paying enough tax. President Donald Trump for instance has attacked Amazon frequently, claiming the company pays "little or no taxes to state and local governments."

You can get a lot of classic or unknown books for free too. It's a funny one. I might have to do a Walrus and buy some shares.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Well I am. I was going to buy a PS4 headset for the kids but will spend the little extra and buy at the local high street and enjoy the experience of getting it the old fashioned way.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Everyone is avoiding tax. I order chicken and it is cheaper if you pay cash. From top to bottom everyone is at it. Maybe we should do away with tax like in the olden days. It would get rid of government workers who get into it wanting security and it would mean people are free to do with their money as they please. I don't mind Amazon and pay cash for my chicken. I like the pirates too who didn't bother giving to the monarchy.

Amazon is over 1,800 a share. It has been smoking hot this year. They are getting into pharmacy, healthcare, groceries and who knows what else. It’s a good stock. I beleive a big part of amazon profits are selling cloud storage. Amazing company

Can't get a lot of the books I want from shops, Amazon gives me access to the more obscure books that's ain't usually stocked

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Amazon seems to get a lot of stick similar to what Wal mart got when they began putting one on every block ;D and threating small local shops. I didn't realize even Wally World was doing free shipping and all online ordering. I have a neighbor with one just a mile away but she stays online, calls ahead for p/u and just waits in the car as they pile in the bags. Now that's just sad.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
these huge stores like Amazon and Google and apple and all this nonsense are destroying the mom and pop shops. They are destroying the culture. They are taking over everything.

Big box stores are nothing new. I remember complaining how Home depot and Lowes took out Sears. Best Buy tko Radio Shack. Nothing sadder than watching Toys R us close their doors but you can argue this keyboard we're all tapping on helped destroy mom and pop shops too. Man you can buy a car online ffs.

A lot of those companies didn’t see the writing on the wall. Sears had a good base built with the sears catoluge which shipped out anything. Radio shack was well positioned to spruce up and update their stores. Amazon grew a lot of independent places and the cardboard industry did very well. A lot of business to trucking companies and so on. I do think they could be subject to
Anti-trust laws and it could become an issue someday. Two out of every five dollars spent online goes to amazon. Say what you well, it is amazing what Jeff Bezos did. He started by selling books. He is also the son of a Cuban immigrant, bright guy. In addition. I’m sure he gives a shitload of money to all the senators for protection, our government is like the mafia

They brought me 4-litres of milk which will be past the use-by-date on Wednesday with my weekly shopping this morning. Not happy. Definitely boycott until tomorrow

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
150bn dollars is a bit much. I don't know why you would need such money. These super rich just get greedy IMO. I would keep 1bn and spend the rest philanthropically. Maybe start a record label and sign up everyone I like and not care about profit as that is a lot of money. As long as I can download an obscure autobiography from the 1930's for a dollar I am more than happy on a personal level.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
A bit much? Understatement of the year.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
He has never appeared on the Philanthropy 50, a list of America’s 50 largest donors, that is published yearly by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. According to public data and news reports, Mr. Bezos and his family have bestowed around $100 million in total on charities — about one-tenth of 1 percent of his fortune.
To date he hasn’t given away much, well 100 million is a lot just not to him

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Does anybody have his email address, could seriously do with some money for adaptations right now. Has to be worth a shot. Never tried it before but I am past being proud when it comes to fundamental things.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
For any of you that may follow the market, every time amazon branches out into a new industry, such as recently they did with healthcare, every stock in the sector amazon announces it is going into drops. Remember when Bezos started he wanted to be the worlds largest bookseller. That was his goal. He borrowed 100,000 bucks from his parents to help him start. That 100,000 he borrowed from his parents is now worth 40 billion dollars. All of amazons original employees are now multi millionaires. They made made people a lot of money through investments. Saying they don’t pay much in corporate taxes is certainly one side of they issue but businesses pay a lot of tax besides corporate. They pay tax on every desk, chair, computer, pencil etc they buy on state and local level so u need to look at the whole picture. Having said that I do wonder about anti trust laws, that’s what we call it here at least. I had no idea corporate taxes were so low in England. Can’t say I know much about business in England but here amazon gets some sweetheart deals opening new corporate headquarters but they do employee a shitload of people and bring a lot of business to areas around them. I don’t blame anyone for trying to pay as little tax as possible but I do question one of the richest corporations the world has seen, one could argue one of the worlds most revolutionary companies, getting all these sweetheart deals but if England is like the US when amazon was looking to build in England areas were fighting to get them in there. Amazon, Apple, google, faceberg and Netflix are amazing powerful companies, maybe the most powerful since the British East Indies company, which I bet payed shit for taxes. By the way, how many large English companies find ways around paying taxes.
-
Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
PS don’t get me wrong I have issues with Amazon’s sweetheart tax deals and do wonder about anti trust but It doesn’t appear amazons success has been from unfair business practices it appears they are genius businessmen but I agree the tax deals they get are outrages. I would have more respect for amazon if they opened corporate headquarters in Detroit (here in the US) where the city is falling to shit and really needs help. If businesses thought more like that it would be easier to have more respect for them.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
I saved quite a bit of money (about $120) by buying a new pair of Nikon Monarch 7 8 X 42 binoculars through Amazon, rather than from a Vancouver retailer. In fact, I couldn't even find the exact pair I wanted here in the city, they just have the Monarch 7 10 X 42, which although very sharp are not as bright and have a narrower field of view.
I absolutely love these Monarch 7 binoculars: widest field of any I've ever owned, also they are the sharpest (for example, I can see individual stars in M44 and that 61 Cygni is a double) and brightest (which means I don't need to strain my eyes on viewing birds and wild animals in shady area or on overcast days).

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Bezos was a visionary, he saw what it could be when AOL was sending disks to every household. Why isn’t AOL google? They could have been.

Also, the great thing about the Kindle is that you can get the greatest literature for free. The entire works of Dickens. The entire works of Shakespeare. Just free. I am interested in some rather niche topics and you can find really rare books and because there is little interest buy them for about a dollar or what have you. The Kindle is great in a number of ways and I think Amazon does an excellent job in that regard. In my early years here I really struggled with books as I simply did not have a bookshop nor any access. The Kindle means I can read anything at any time with no limitations. That is pretty Amazoning really.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
I could never read stuff on an electronic device. I feel sorry for you not having access to quality second hand book shops Miles. There is nothing like the feel and smell of a paper book and I am not sure I could cope without the respite wandering around these emporiums of enlightenment. I get the supremacy of Nikon, having shot with them for years, and their customer service in replacing shutters etc has been top notch.
-
Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
Yes, I would never use a Kindle either.
Having an actual book means you can handily wipe your arse on any of the pages you have already read.
What do you think of that multi functionality Mr Kindle?
I say "Pah!" to your modern technology

I get that but I gotta say the ability to hold hundreds of books on one device is incredibly handy. Especially during travel. You can also go to the library and the put the books right on the kindle for you. News magazines no though, I want my papers in print.
Amazon is on top. On Monday, it surpassed Microsoft to become the largest publicly traded company in the U.S. by market cap, with a current valuation of $789 billion. Apple, its fierce competitor, has fallen to fourth place, trailing both Microsoft and Alphabet.
That's good news for Amazon investors, especially those who bought stock early on. If you had invested $1,000 in the tech company in early January 2009, your initial outlay would be worth more than $28,356 as of January 2019, according to CNBC calculations.
And the ecommerce giant is expected to see shares surge more than 20 percent in 2019, according to a new report from Pivotal Research Group.
Plus that’s pretty cool to

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
So we have a new AG up for confirmation here in the US. During questioning he mentioned he may go after the FANG stocks using anti trust laws. Mind you Microsoft just gave half a billion dollars to affordable housing. These big tech stocks will be on the defense now. If the fed goes after these companies it’ll be an interesting battle
PS start looking at buying some gold and silver to hedge your bets. In the 80’s silver was 74 bucks an ounce which in today’s money is around 140 bucks. Today it’s 15-16 dollars an ounce

Yes I can see how it is useful and vital for some to have so many books on one device. Just personally I spend enough time working with screens all day and night to know I would hate having to read books on one. No substitute.
I fell into a coma reading the rest of your post but yes Amazon, shares, etc. I think Miles hordes gold too, so maybe you are both dragons. Batman would love to read about you being such a big fan of fantasy fiction. 😁

Sure nod off it’s fine but it is fascinating 1,000 bucks invested in amazon ten years ago is 28,000 today. Many books I do prefer hard or soft cover but I had three very large bookshelves full of them and I was able to put them all on my kindle and expand my meth production operation. Excuse me when I go into investment talk, it’s just the only way I’ve been able to get a taste of how the big boys do it, they won’t let us get a lot but if you study up and becareful you can provide a nice security blanket for your family. Funny thing is I live like I don’t have it. I have it tied up, easy enough to get access to, move it around if need be but I’ve never sold stocks or anything despite being in since I was 19. I would really like to leave the bulk of it to a good nonprofit, I may start a new charity free hats for fat people

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
I disagree about books now. They simply take up too much space and I say the same about music too. I have hundreds of books and albums and considering I end up moving pretty regularly it just becomes a burden. It costs about a thousand pounds to move my stuff every time and that accumulation becomes burdensome. With an electronic device you can store a lot of data on a very small USB or what have you and I prefer that. I also do not download anything in my name. My next step is throwing out the bed. Who needs a bed when you can sleep on the floor? What is the actual point of a bed? Heavy stupid things that cats run under and where dust accumulates. Enough with beds. I am boycotting beds.

Re: Amazon should be boycotted?
On the other side of things bezos saw the possibilities before other grasped the possibilities. Look at sears, they sold everything and had that sears catalogue in everyone’s house. They had a grand opportunity to change to internet. It is sad to see so many brick and mortar struggle but everyone here bitching has probably used amazon. In an interview a while ago Bezos said amazon is just temporary. Something will come along to knock it out, it’s the history of companies.
