The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
I'm gonna mention three (IMO), in chronological order:
Lennox vs. Tua - I had such high hopes for this fight. It promised to be a barnburner. Instead, it turned into a boring spectacle of Lennox keeping his jab in Tua's face for the whole fight, and Tua doing nothing more than swinging those vicious left hooks at Lennox and missing by a mile. I expected a whole lot more from Tua, but that was the fight that deflated the whole "2nd coming of Tyson" hype. Two buddies of mine and me took turns snoozing throughout the whole fight.
Wlad vs. Sultan - This one was even worse than Lennox-Tua. Timid Wlad was in full force. Pawing sheepishly at Sultan, lest he get grazed by one of Sultan's well-publicized punches. Ridiculous. I would've demanded my money back. I could probably put a few Wlad (later years) fights up here and, guess what............. I think I will.
Fury vs. Wlad - My joy at having someone finally dethrone Wlad was completely annulled by seeing Timid Wlad throw 4 punches a round. Whatever gypsy magic Fury performed on Wlad's head prior to the fight worked to perfection. This one is pretty close to Wlad-Sultan in utter garbage of a fight. I'll always say that the Wlad that lost to Joshua would've annihilated Fury. Just goes to show that Wlad could be toyed with mentally.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Chris Byrd vs DaVaryl Williamson
Anything John Ruiz was involved in
Wlad vs Fury
-
Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Shannon Briggs v Siarhei Liakhovich was the worst fight I have ever seen. Both were fighting at a snail's pace, standing and looking at each other, arm punches and hugging.

I hated Byrd fights period. But yeah..... someone wrote Byrd and Williamson fought "like good friends."
John Ruiz was a joke of a HW champion.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Thought it was actually a worst champ thread and started to nominate Martin over longtime honorees Seldon and Akinwande ;D. Even Martins "win" for the trinket was crooked and terrible in ko'ing Glazkov without even landing a punch. Glazkov seems retired now with a knee shredded in multiple ways. I like Aj but all that was about was hand walking him to a first belt.

Yea, I thought it was regarding the worst match ups to crown a champion, like Fres/Charr for example.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Ali/Spinks 2
Spinks was sapped of his energy by snorting mountains of cocaine leading up to the fight. Spinks was said to have had sex with 3 different women per night in the month leading up to the rematch.
Ali fought like, well, a 37 year old Ali.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
You all have short memories .... do you think boxing began in the 1990's or are you newbie fans ;D
Marvin Hart v Jack Root
Jack Dempsey v Tommy Gibbons
Jack Sharkey v Max Schmeling
Floyd Patterson v Roy Harris
Muhammad Ali v Jimmy Young
Trevor Berbick v Pinklon Thomas
Although, I will readily admit that the modern era has the old timers beaten hands down when it comes to boring fights, with heavyweights who should be nowhere near a 'world' title

Ali had some boring defences after he beat Foreman. Against Bugner was one.

Ruiz vs. Holyfield 2 was a great fight. Not an all time must see fight. But the last four rounds of that fight was absolute gold.

They could have watered down that fight to the last two rounds and the fans would have equally have been as entertained without wasting any time.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Wlad vs Povetkin was thee absolute most SHITTIEST fight I have EVER seen. SHITTIEST!
I'm glad they stopped Lewis vs. Akinwande. It was for the best.
-
Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Tyson v Boneclutcher Smith. That was dire except for the last 10 seconds of the last round.

Haha.... yeah, that one was pretty bad.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Might go back to the splintered WBA trinket after Ali was stripped. I've never seen 6'6 195 lb Ernie Terrell win over Eddie Machen but from the way it reads that's a good thing.

I was going to post Wlad v Pov what an incredibly lame fight that was. Surprised it didn’t make page one.

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
David Haye vs. Audrey Harrison. Harrison fought like a frightened old woman, since then I've called him "Audrey". He blocked me on twitter for it.
Haye vs. Klitschko was rather dull too, after the long wait and build-up. I nearly travelled to Europe to see it, I'm glad I didn't. Wladimir tried to make a fight of it but Haye just kept his distance and backed off, round after round.
Fury vs. Klitschko was dull and disappointing (again, not Klitschko's fault)
Klitschko vs. Povetkin due to excessive holding (this one was Klitschko's fault)

Did you see the state of David Haye's toe? He was courageous even stepping into the ring for that fight....the man could have been KILLED....his toe man, his TOE!!!!!

I resemble your remark! Being a lifelong Joe Bugner fan (he is exactly my age) and having spent mega money watching all his Uk fights, plus some on CCTV in the middle of the night, and having the biggest collection of Joe Bugner memorabilia known to man I feel extremely hurt by your spiteful comment.
Bastard!

The ring walk back to the dressing room was more stressful for AJ.

That was on ITV delayed showing and Barry Hearns first entry into boxing. Bugner was despised for beating Henry Cooper so do not know how you became a fan. He did become WBF champion. :)

I became a fan, as an ex amateur boxer, firstly because my old man, who had the money to go and I didn't, saw bugner beat Cooper, and the whole media establishment were anti Bugner, which pissed me off. The most realistic quote on the fight was from Harry Gibbs, the ref. Henry went to him after the fight and said' I thought I nicked it Harry' Harry said 'Henry , Champions don't nick fights'. As a youngster I was totaly pissed off with the Cooper/Brian London/Johnny Prescott/ Jack Bodell lot, they were all fucking useless by comparison, with all due respect. But the real reason why I was a mega fan was Bill Grundy, his 6 o clock news show in 1967 or 8, he introduced Joe Bugner as an 18 yr old heavyweight prospect, blonde Adonis, my mum turned to me, all 10 stone 7, and said, 'you do boxing but you don't look like him'!!

Re: The WORST heavyweight championship fights in boxing history
Lennox Lewis V Henry Akinwande - Akinwande just hugged Lewis like Lennox was his new girlfriend.
Mills Lane got so pi$$ed off with Akinwande that he threw him out.

To be fair, I think Akinwande was a 'troubled person' or whatever the PC version of that is now.

Was he? I know he was due to fight Holyfield and that was cancelled but cannot remember the specific reasons.
