He beat Briedis, Gassiev, and Bellew. Can anyone really rival that?
Yes probably with Mikey Garcia and Terrence Crawford close seconds.
Inoue is in the running, McDonnell and Payano both inside a round.
Crawford fought two decent fighters in Horn and Benavidez. Don’t think he compares to Usyk. Garcia fought Easter who was solid and Lipinets who was pretty good and up a weight class.
So far the top three are Usyk, Inoue, and Garcia.
Who else wants to give their opinion? Who else are we missing?
AJ went Parker and Povetkin.
Shiro has Lopez and Melindo, with Juarez on Dec-30th.
Ioka could have Arroyo and Nietes (has to be comeback of the year if he beats Nietes).
Jacobs went Sulecki and Derevyanchenko.
Usyk on the road tho, unifying, winning the WBSS tourney, is tough to top.
When speaking of Usyk let’s not forget that each fight was in the other mans country as well. Latvia, Russia, UK
When you consider not just who he beat but the magnitude of the events (WBSS/unifications/massive UK PPV) and the circumstances (all as the away fighter) Usyk's run is probably one of the best ever (modern era) let alone this year.
Isaac Dogboe had a big breakout year.
Cesar Juarez
Jessie Magdaleno (pulled off upset taking WBO title)
Hidenori Otake (one round demolition against a solid vet)
Emanuel Navarrete (Ring top 10)*
*needs to win, of course
Usyk and Crawford on cleaning house, full unification and a realistic intent to move up and do the exact same all over again. Agree Dogboe had a breakout too. If we're talking little over 1 yr time Wangek is right there. Inoue is the one we want/need to see more of. Loma and Garcia need each other. Not a bad annual end really, we have many options and all on cusp of big fights.
If Wilder beats Fury I think you have to give it to him honestly.
Warrington will of had a great year if he can beat Frampton.
Top 3 for me would be Usyk, Dogboe and Inoue.
I'd make Usyk fighter of the year based on his quality of wins. If Tyson won in a few hours he'd have a great story but it's just the one big win so not sure it would rival what Usyk done.
contrary to what a lot of other ppl think I reckon Usyk IS going to make big waves at heavyweight when he moves up. I don't buy this " he's too small" idea. I've seen him walk down superheavyweights looking to trade, you can see how he handled Joyce he has no doubts about his chin or ability to push bigger men around. Most heavyweights will really struggle with his speed and skills IMO
