Larry Holmes was a great heavyweight champion behind Ali and Louis for me.
Holmes had a great jab, fantastic chin and a superb record. Yes Larry had close fights against opponents he should have beaten easily such as Williams and Snipes but taking Shavers "punch" and coming back, the war with Norton and the event/beating of Cooney were unbelievable achievements. Larry was smart and made good money when he left Don King others did not.
Does he really have had to face Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, Gerrie Coetzee or rematch Tim Witherspoon to enhance his legacy?
Larry upset a lot of people and that was one of the reasons many dislike him especially coming after Ali but he was a top fighter and I was glad he got some appreciation when he beat Mercer against all the odds.
Larry would have beaten Foreman peak or the old version. Shame he never got that chance.
Larry Holmes may not be the best heavyweight ever........ but he was certainly the best WHINER of all time..... both heavyweight and pound-for-pound.

Witherspoon scooped up his belt Larry dropped after Holmes couldn't agree to terms with Page but definitely a rematch that needed to happen. Wasn't King a major factor in it not happening too? Imagine that. Holmes and Coetzee was made a couple of times and fell apart and Page beat him a month after their last proposed date in 84. Hey all is not lost though ;D Holmes and Witherspoon shared a ppv geezer card where Tim lost his rematch to Page and Holmes milked every ounce of his name to rematch Bonecrusher Smith. Holmes is a racist. He said there would never be another white heavyweight champion because blacks are superior, and he disparaged Rocky Marciano.
Holmes would have been schooled by prime Ali, and destroyed by prime Foreman and by prime Klitschko (either one). The division was weak when he had his run. I loved it when Mike Tyson knocked him out.
Butterbean was robbed in his fight with Larry Holmes.
He did infamously say that Rocky Marciano couldn't carry his jockstrap. And..... he was always whining about how he didn't get his just due (a lie) because he was black. Could never stand the whining bum.

I did not see the Spinks fights but I heard he should have got the decision and that is a shame if he was denied equally and beating the record because of what he said.
Actually, Holmes said that AFTER he lost to Michael Spinks. That's just the kind of prick he was.
To this day, he's always bringing up the fact that he was hated for beating Ali. It's been 40 years and he continues to hold on to this narrative. That's plenty of time to change your attitude and image. George Foreman reinvented himself as a person and public figure. Larry is still the same bitter prick he always was.

Prime Ali would have schooled prime Holmes. Prime Frazier would have stopped him.

I dunno, I've never been a fan of Holmes and only watched him 'live' when he launched his Tyson and then 90's comeback but he always struck me far more a bitter prick with a chip on his shoulder than some racist. Street smart shat talker who came up very very rough. When did he proclaim blacks 'superior'..sure we're not talking about Jimmy the Greek? He said what he said about Marciano but it was more derisive of Marcianos merit and record than his race? Fans and detractors fused that part, unless I missed something more direct. Holmes could be a grade A asshole who said exactly what entered his mind, he pulled no punches but you gotta consider where this Country was and just look at the tribal divide that became the Holmes v Cooney promotion/fiasco to see that the writers, blocks of "fans", promoters and personalities were every bit as responsible for making that black vs white and made sure we all knew it. Cooney and Holmes left that pretty close friends from what I gather.
