Bivol vs. Smith Jr

Dmitry Bivol will look to make the fifth defense of his WBA light heavyweight title when he steps into the ring to face Joe Smith Jr. on March 9 at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona New York, live and exclusively on DAZN.

Last time out, Bivol dominated former unified champion Jean Pascal in New Jersey with a unanimous decision victory on Nov. 24. Meanwhile, Smith is coming off dropping Melvin Russell in the first round to win via knockout when the pair fought in Connecticut on June 30.

Both boxers can't wait for the fight.

“I am glad to finally meet Joe in the ring,” said Bivol in a Matchroom Boxing press release statement. “I saw his fights against [Andrzej] Fonfara and [Bernard] Hopkins live and always wanted to test my skills against him. Thank you to World of Boxing, Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN — I hope to put [on] a great performance for everybody!

Added Bivol's manager Vadim Kornilov: “Bivol was supposed to fight Joe back in November. It's a very exciting fight. Both Dmitry and Joe have a lot of power. I guess this fight was meant to happen and we look forward to building a relationship with Eddie Hearn and DAZN."

Smith, who's most known for knocking Hopkins out of the ring during what turned out to be the legend's last pro fight, will be looking to hand Bivol his first loss.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to fight Bivol for the world championship,” Smith said. “Everything I’ve worked for in and out of the gym was to better myself and become a world champion. All the hard work and my determination will pay off come fight night.”

‘Mighty Mo’ Maurice Hooker will also be in action on the night when he defends his WBO super lightweight title against Mikkel Lespierre in the co-main event.

Dmitry Bivol vs. Joe Smith Jr. will take place Saturday, March. 9. The undercard is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. ET. followed by the main card at 9 p.m.

Good fight. I would have preferred Beterbiev vs. Smith but this should be entertaining as well. Smith has a huge punch n heart but will most likely be outboxed by Bivol. I’ll be rooting for Smith though.

Smith TKO 3

I’m sure that Bivol wins pretty easy. Smith is a tough fighter, but Bivol is too good technically. Barrera best Smith every round almost. I know that Smith broke his jaw early in the fight, but he just isn’t that good. He got fortunate against Fonfara who wasn’t that good in the first place and then got a very fortunate shot at Hopkins.

I think Bivol stops him late.

Not sure why Smith has eased up on staying active after retiring..for good it feels ;D..a HOF'er. He showed brass fighting with a busted jaw vs Barrera and it'll be interesting to see his approach with Bivol. Bivol isn't exactly mashing the gas in fights he dominates and like to see Smith go with his best shot and force a fight early on. I can't see him having a shot trying to box Bivol, roll your dice Joe.

If this card shows one thing it's that promoters can work together even if on a smaller scale. 5 separate groups putting in here now if only they could follow suit with major showdowns :-X.

I didn't think it was close enough to be a draw. I wasn't keeping score though, kuzmin did ease off quite a lot in the mid rounds though, didn't handle injuring his thumb too well I think. He ended well though.

Kuzmin is mildly impressive in patches, bit too slow and not powerful enough to be a real world champ though I think, I suspect he's too old to make any major changes.

I'll eventually give in and subscribe to DAZN. But I'll always prefer the Showtime and ESPN events.

Boxing is no longer a mainstream sport..... and both the networks and the streaming services are making sure it stays that way. It'll now be more of a niche sport than ever.

The doctor coming in with the stool then backing away when the ref didn't stop was quite amusing. .. doesn't seem much point in letting this continue, or monehan is getting brain damage

Johnson has some legit one punch power and showed some smarts walking him into it. Brutal beat down of Monaghan.

It'll find it's way again, always has. The streaming is very hit or miss for me. I've had espn+ for a few months and haven't used it once :-X. But that's the selling point and why Hearn is all in..he pays zero to networks, advertising etc from what I can see. Unfortunately he doesn't see fit to promote the arenas really. Hey not all bad..the 'free' networks showing live cards in primetime tv. It's always great to see that again.

I've been watching this from the start of the card. Not drinking today so I'm not rambling nonsense :S

There's always tomorrow bud ;D. Smith landed a punch in the 4th. Bivol is making him look like an off balance bar fighter in gaps, he's in cruise control.

Nice shot had Smith in all sorts of trouble. Bivol has a way of perfect punch placement and then steps aside to let you fall into more problems. Smith is every bit tough to make 12. Why the hell are they mentioning Bivol v GGG :p

Wow. Smith just lost his shat and body slammed him wwe style. Scoop and slam. Not cool Joe.

They seem very desperate to get bivol down to 168, even though he seems to best 175lber around. Bivol is giving out a morale draining beating here, I think this will be the end of smith jr unless he lands something very big... something that isn't a judo throw anyway :S

Bivol nearly knocked out in the last few seconds of that round...amazing. Bivol was doing great too before that

That was a one way brutal 10th round right up until 2:59, huge right hand had Bivol on raggedy legs! Go all out Joe. Bivol was shook up bad.

Bivol was definently troubled by being whacked at the end of the tenth, looked totally different in the 11th he still landed some good stuff bak though.... maybe that's why they want bivol moving down a weight.

I don't think bivol had even recovered by the start of the 12th round... he ended well though... bit worrying for him though whacked twice with the same punch and the second time had him out on his feet and took him over five minutes to recover from. Bivol moves so quickly he doesn't seem to be like Kovalev with pnching power but not many are.

The closest but completely one sided I've seen in a while ;D. Smith jr will spend tomorrow wanting that right hand back, he caught a Bivol waiting on the bell but he felt it every minute after.

The more I watch Bivol, the less I’m pressed with him. I definitely still think he’s a really good fighter, but he has kind of proven that he fades towards the ends of fights and lets his opponents have success in the late rounds. He is a good boxer and moves well, but I have a feeling he will run into someone that won’t give away all the early rounds and then have an issue with having to dig down deep to win it.

I think he still may be the best in a loaded division , but I’m just not as confident as I used to be. Also, I wish that Smith could have fought Beterbiev like he was going to originally because that would have been a fun fight.
