Who beats Mike Tyson?
The Tyson that fought Buster Douglas was very poor. He had no head movement, little combination punches being thrown, loading up with bombs and slow throughout the fight.
James fought a great fight but it is now well known that Tyson was not as dedicated as he had been previously and his lifestyle was eventually catching up with him.
So which of his previous 10 championship opponents would have beaten that version of Tyson in Tokyo in 1989?
Berbick
Smith
Pinklon Thomas
Tucker
Tyrell Biggs
Holmes
Tubbs
Spinks
Bruno
Carl Williams

The guy who really beat Mike Tyson was Mike Tyson

Tell that to Buster Douglas.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
He would have landed against just about all of those like he did Douglas and that would have been enough.
Of that list I'd have to go Smith
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Why does everyone forget the fact that in Round 8 Douglas was down for a full 12 seconds.
Doesn't matter that Tyson was nowhere near fighting fit the fact is he beat Douglas fair and square but because of the refs fuck up the fight continued.
There was a massive inquest launched but the powers that be never reversed it or ordered an immediate rematch.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
I'd go with Smith from that list too, he took Tyson the distance and was one tough fucker.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
No one forgets it, I just think people are bored of it. It's not ten seconds, it's a ten count. The press conference where Tyson's mob, led by Don were counting in unison was priceless, tragic, pathetic. No amount of counting or recounting changes anything, the referee is in charge of the count and Douglas beat it. We had the same nonsense with the Wilder Fury fight with interweb experts proving he was knocked out for reals.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Rocky Fielding would obviously have destroyed him

Douglas was watching the ref and was waiting to get up at the right time. Same as Tunney was against Dempsey.
It would have been a travesty if they stole the title from Douglas that day.
They tried and nearly did.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
It doesnt matter what Douglas was watching the fact is the ref visibly started the count 2 maybe 3 seconds after Douglas was fully down.
What use is a 10 count if its started late, there has to be consistently from refs, maybe a 15 count is ok in your eyes?
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
This has been done to death, there are side by sides of the count they got and they're identical. The count for both was picked up at the same time and at the same speed. The knock on that of course is that why did one get stopped and one didn't? One was engaged with the referee early in the count and looked ready to continue, the other was groping around for his mouthpiece glassy eyed and unable to get it back in his gob.
Slow count, maybe. But fair on one and not the other not a chance.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
The side by side video means nothing. Douglas was down for a full 12/13 seconds, not on his way down but on his back because the ref fucked up and stsrted the count late. Meaning Tyson shouldn't have even been in the 9th or 10th rounds because he scored a KO victory in the 8th.
You cant have one ref giving a fighter extra time to recover when most refs don't.
What next..... a standing 11 count 😁
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Better for Mike that the count hubbub didn't result in ko win. Either way controversy would have followed and if no rematch I think he would have walked into the already set Holyfield fight the same way and get chewed up. Majority of those listed had such a wide gap in how the fights and loss came about that a few yrs wouldn't seem to make up. All fall the same save maybe for Tucker and Smith who both had him shook then sheltered up but made the final bell. Quick Tillis did pretty well and controlled sizable gaps in the action vs a young Tyson too.

Surely it matters more than anything else? If the ref had started a couple seconds sooner, whose to say Douglas wouldn’t have gotten up faster? The refs count was the only thing he had to go by. If a guys just been dropped hard he might not know the difference between ten seconds and fifty unless he hears it. It’s the exact same premise that came up for Fury against Wilder. This almost never gets beat to death in other instances where a referee buys a guy time either. How many times have we seen bad point deductions, the doctor called ringside to examine a cut right when a guy was taking punishment, way too much time for a gumshield out or loose tape on the gloves, etc?

Or Wilder being gifted an extra 30 seconds to recover between rounds for no apparent reason when Ortiz nearly knocked him down.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
What's more silly is the "long count" happens every single week all over the world but fans don't even realise or take a blind bit of notice. The famous events get scrutinized which leads fans to believe something untoward happened that is basically the norm.
How many fans even know commissions all over the world have different rules? Refs in Vegas have different instructions to those in New York, London and Tokyo. And that's ignoring their own personal characteristics.

So goes the sport though, the names always get the pop but you're right guys in clubs and no name venues get screwed over weekly in one regard or another. There are 'unifies rules' in place but it often comes down to the competency of local State commissions and everyone being on the same page and on the level. The biggest confusion still seems to be the ruling of NC or tech draws when it comes to cuts or fouls prematurely stopping a fight. The scoring of partial rounds is a recipe for problems imo.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Buster beat the count that was given so i really do not see what the point was in making a fuss over it. I mean he was waiting on the count he could have got up earlier if he needed to nothing to discuss really.

Listen man just admit that you don't understand what a ten count is and move on

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
As far as the original question, I think everyone that was already stopped by Tyson would have been again, no matter how bad he was against Douglas. He still had that aura, and most of the guys you list were scared, didn’t come to win. Smith and Tony tucker were the only guys you could give a chance, because both gave it a go and had proved they were well capable of going the distance. Neither boxed nearly as well as Douglas did that night, but Tucker May have been capable of fighting better than he did, wasnt it rumoured he went into the fight with a broken hand or something:-\ he stopped Douglas right before he fought Tyson as well.
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
"Smith and Tucker gave it a go"? Seriously mate??
I watched both those 'fights' live, and I've watched them since.
Neither Tucker nor Bonecrusher genuinely turned up to win that fight. Tyson intimidated them both before the bell even rang and they just wanted to survive. Neither guy had a game plan beyond using their height to frustrate and grab Tyson on the way in.
Bonecrusher embarrassed himself by blatantly refusing to let go of Tyson as early as the second round. Both were shut out losses!
-
Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
p4pking is right Tucker hurt his hand when he landed that uppercut against Tyson in the first round. Tony did give it a try for the early rounds after that he took a beating.
James clutched his way through the fight and only tried in the last round when he landed that big right hand.
Pinklon Thomas was the one I considered boxer who tried his best and took a brutal beating in the first round but still came back to survive until mid rounds before being brutally stopped.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Tucker also showed how to force Tyson back in the 15 round, even at the state he was trying.
Tuckers fight prior to that one was a KO of Buster Douglas, fancy that :)

Fair enough, I havent watched either in so long. Just remember both at least being there and landing a thing or two in the closing minutes. Considering how much worse tyson was against Douglas, i stand by saying they would have had a better chance than other opponents just for that fact.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
I disagree with X regarding Tucker. I recall Tucker shaking his head when Tyson would run in with a flurry, indicating he wasn't hurt .
When he was forcing Tyson back in the 15th round, was left thinking why he didn't do that earlier.

Tyson never fought 15 rounds with any fighter, it was 12 with Tucker.
Tyson did have a 15 round fight scheduled with Biggs but he was brutally destroyed in 6 or 7 rounds. Distinctly remember seeing Oprah Winfrey in the crowd looking horrified as Tyson knocked down Biggs. Tyson infamously said that "Biggs was screaming like a girl" when he was getting hit.

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
Indeed, for some reason It stuck in my head as 15, even to the point I rewatched it last weekend and thought they'd cut the last 3 rounds out.
Stand corrected

Re: Who beats Mike Tyson?
First of all I always thought Tyson was overrated. He had the head movement and busy for the first two or three rounds After that he would slow to a snails pace. Against Tucker Tyson threw 412 punches. Bowe threw 711 punches vs Holyfield. That's almost 300 more. Plus Tyson would always look to clinch rather than fight his way out. If Tyson is being out worked then he is beatable. Let's remember that it was Holyfield who loss 2 out his last 4 fights one by KO before the Tyson fight. Yet you could tell early that Holyfield came to fight. Watch the video Tyson is the one who wants to clinch. I think Ali and Marciano were great. Not because they were unbeatable. It's the fact you would have to kill them in order to win. Tyson like most bullies lack the heart of a Champion.

Whilst I agree with the bully mentality and it certainly was illustrated in his losses, Tyson was more than just a 2 or 3 round fighter. At his best he was dangerous for 12 rounds.
Sure Tyson did start fast but that was part of his strategy to knock out his opponents early. If they survived they still took a beating and tired later on anyway normally to be stopped.
Tyson would get into clinches but that was mainly his opponents doing.
The Tyson that lost to Holyfield, in fact the version that came out of prison was hollow and a shadow of the peak Tyson.

This may be the reason 15 rounds stuck in my head all that time for the Tyson vs Tucker Fight.
It was originally scheduled to be 15 rounds, but last last minute all three governing bodies went for 12 rounds.
