Worst quitter in boxing..
After Khan recently said “no mas” after taking a thigh shot from Crawford..who would you say is the worst quitter in boxing history.
Define what a quitter is..there must be levels of quitting..Brook had to quit due to the eye injury..what is an acceptable level of quitting?
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Duran with his no mas against Leonard. No real excuse for it but he more than made up for it in his career.
Buster Douglas against Evander.
Seldon faking against Tyson.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Tor Hammer who quit twice on the stool and was then fired by his promoter via Twitter.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Golota against Tyson and in a way against Bowe.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
There are very few good examples imo. While Golota against Tyson seems one, i remember reading somewhere that he did in fact suffer a concussion and they found some abnormality or bleeding/swelling on the brain afterwards. Almost always too harsh to call a top fighter out for quitting, they dont get there with that in them and we arent in there bodies, etc. I think that fighting to survive from the get go actually takes a lot less than doing everything you can to win and then packing it in once youre out of options, and we see that all the time.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Douglas quit before he got on the ring. Disrespected the title.
Still remember Gary Mason calling the fight after around 40 seconds
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Victor Ortiz has quit a few times

Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Maybe. He quit in a roundabout way against floyd too. Defintely a runner.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Golota pulled the :OhNo: against Michael Grant also. Think he was ahead by a bit and got dropped late and promptly told the ref..nope I gotta go. We've seen guys opt out in different ways. From intentional fouls inviting a DQ to staying on the stool. Milking rules or having them milked for them with cuts or mystery injuries once clear of the ND or NC 4th round point. In fairness substantial injury is real. To get pounded round after round cut up and know you're so far behind. But when you think flat out quit it's usually the kneel, turning your back or between rounds. Not easy to call professional fighters 'quitters' but as mentioned some guys have established patterns. Ortiz, Golota and Hammer are good ones. Have to add Yori Boy Campas who had his share of oddly opting out in a few big fights. Remember David Allen in two of the Hopkins fights caught peeking at the ref when he was 'out' ;D. Those were some ugly fights. The hot and frigid Bert Cooper had a few times it was easier to just stay seated. Cooper quit against Carl Williams and that reputation followed him right into Foreman fight where he was legitimately hurt but they took his purse. Then over the next number of years he's bringing Holyfield, Mercer and Moorer to the very brink of defeat. At times you have to wonder what goes through a guys head.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
After all this time I'm still not sure what this is. Bizarre fight and the one and only time I recall a guy demanding a ref count him out and then he counts along with him :-X http://youtu.be/tJRxzWMlVzw
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
I give Khan the benefit of the doubt. He has never quit before. Knocked senseless sure, but he always tries. This was a strange fight, but Khan's strengths are diminished. He will never be a Calzaghe of 36 throwing a hundred punches a round and that was how Khan dominated opponents. Just dazzle with speed and output and just hope his chin doesn't get tagged too often. This style he has now is kind of nowhere. He looks like an older, worn fighter because he is.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
Khan is fast but the timing from Crawford nullified the speed.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
What about this one? A lot of talk about him being shorted so he sent a message to promoters...like don't ever bring me in for a big fight again?

After the 3rd round Jermaine White told his corner, "throw the towel man, I'm through"
His trainer had the nerved to ask him, 'you aint got another round in you?'
Anthony Peterson is just pasting this kid. His chin really was sturdy, but his arm punches were so weak, I'm not sure what the hell was his corner thinking, asking him if he had another round in him. While It doesn't qualify as the worst quitter, I think this fight qualifies as a fighter who had to quit, because his corner seamed content to tell him to do stuff, that no way could he do!
If you got time to watch 3 rounds of a shellacking...this is it!
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
White should have had a code for him to retire/quit with his trainer.

You don't have to be knocked unconscious or even have your bell completely rung to stay down when you're down. Just stay down, take the L and shake the winner's hand.

LOL. If a guy can holler 'pop' while popping his foe, yeah, no shame in staying down, take the loss.
loved his combo on the ropes, pop pop POP!POP!POP!
I guess my example should've been called, "When it's ok to quit"

Sometimes as a fighter (for the overwhelming 99.9999999% of boxers out there) you're going to get outclassed and sometimes brutally so. Boxing ain't football, boxing ain't baseball, boxing is not some sport where the score can get run up on you and everyone is still safe and sound albeit demoralized. Sometimes you get in there and you're in well over your head and you just get hammered and in boxing or any other combat sport that can be very dangerous it's why fighters making their professional debut typically don't get title shots or fight seasoned veterans of the professional game.
That said I believe there's a difference in Khan and White. White was a young 13 fight professional whereas Khan was a veteran 32 year old with 37 professional bouts. White was in the deep end vs a then hot young prospect Anthony Peterson and Khan was in a TITLE FIGHT he should have been fully prepared for. White had every opportunity to take a knee and leave it like that and just say "Hell you sure did beat my ass, maybe I'll get you back after I fix my training to compete at that level" but Khan should have been better prepared and to go out on yeah it was a low blow, but hell from the first round he looked out of his depth and never looked like competing he's 32 it's now or never for titles for a legacy....he came up well short and quitting in that scenario looks worse in my view.
The funny thing is I looked up White's career...shortly after getting hammered by Peterson he fought JC Jr who obviously picked him because AP had such an easy night with him.

True, True and True.
On the flip side it seems as if Khan's corner was ready to quit with him, knowing he has some skills, as you stated, a vet.... while White's corner asked the jack-most stupid azz question; You aint got another round in you?
He did at the onset, but within 3 rounds he got all 10 rounds beat out of him.
Re: Worst quitter in boxing..
hard one but i respect all of them for trying in the first place.
not many have the guts to step in the ring
