Greatest Athletes of All-Time
I just wanted to start a thread where athletes of all sports, all nationalities could be celebrated and viewed in awe. Surely there will be discussions (not arguments) about who is the greatest this or that, but at the end of the day all should be given some respect for their accomplishments in the sport(s) they played...
I start with the Super Friends/Justice League of sports

Didn't look through any YouTube clip compilations... Maldini was a great defender over so many years. Handsome guy too....
Re: Greatest Athletes of All-Time
Baresi, who played for AC Milan, is probably the best defender I have seen.
Virgil Van Dijk is the current best.

He ain't one of the greatest of all time but fuck me he is far too good for the Villa, when he does finally leave us I wish him nothing but the best.
He's easily the most naturally talented player that the Villa have produced in my lifetime.

Re: Greatest Athletes of All-Time
Grealish is nice, how long do you expect he'll stay at Villa? I'd imagine immediate improvement will be needed or he'll head to a "bigger club". Certainly United and Spurs would take a look at him.

It's a strange one with regards to how long he will stay because he is a villa fan through and through, he has already delayed his progression by sticking with us, if we hold onto him until the end of the season I'll be happy.
As I said before he is far too good for us, if he does leave I hope it's for one of the big boys

Maldini was the best defender ever because his versatility is ridiculous.
Baresi was amazing, but as Central Defenders, overall , Alessandro Nesta was absolutely untouchable.
This is how good Nesta is. In 2006, Nesta got injured and it made Cannavaro look amazing because he had plenty of heroic work to do. But if Nesta had stayed fit, Cannavaro wouldn’t have had to work that hard, it would’ve been fucking easy. Pace, Elegance, skill, courage. He had the fucking lot.
Greatest Athlete of all time? Depends what you’re basing it on, and what side of the World you come from.
Ali, Woods, Carl Lewis, Walter Payton , Michael Jordan from over the pond. From this side, Federer, Mercxx,
And then there’s Usain Bolt & Jonah Lomu. 🤷*♂️
Re: Greatest Athletes of All-Time
I will check out Alessandro Nesta again but for some reason he did not stand out for me.
Bobby Moore putting the tackles in 66 and 70 world cups were quality too.
Re: Greatest Athletes of All-Time
Good thread, Lyle.
I'd say Bo Jackson for me. That rare individual that can play not one, but TWO professional sports at a high level. He could've been one of the greatest running backs in the NFL..... and he was a bonafide major league baseball star.
Unfortunately his career was cut short by that freak injury playing football. An injury that doctors said only became that severe because of Bo's own strength in trying to run through a tackle where others would've just gone down.
I saw a documentary on him and some of the plays he made in both sports make up a long highlight reel of his careers.

Bobby Moore was class for England. But although I was only a kid at the time, I remember people used to say he saved it for England and done fuck all for his club.
Proper gent in my book though.

I remember watching that live and you could just tell. Like when a tackler wraps a guy up low and Bo turned into it going down and just lay there. He later said a lot of the lasting damage was due to resetting his own hip, right there and then ???. Even with hip replacement it was amazing he managed come back with the White Sox but never to really excel again and seem to recall him doing a lot of DH. Truly a great cut short on the field(s).
