Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin fight date confirmed for May 2 at Manchester Arena

Dillian Whyte will fight Alexander Povetkin at Manchester Arena on May 2, Eddie Hearn has confirmed.

Whyte is the current WBC mandatory challenger, just one loss to Anthony Joshua tarnishing an otherwise perfect 28 fight record.

The Brit has opted for a stern challenge with a third Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder fight rendering the belt currently unavailable.

Povetkin has lost just twice in a 38-fight career, defeated by Anthony Joshua and Wladamir Klitschko. With the Russian now 40, the fight against Whyte surely represents his last chance for another shot at a world title.

Despite Povetkin coming to the end of his career, Whyte says he is not taking the challenge lightly.

“This is a great fight, he told Sky Sports. “Povetkin is an Olympic gold medallist, has loads of experience, he's a former world champion and he's only lost to Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

"I am not overlooking him. He will come in shape, he's tough and very well-schooled.

"I've got respect for him but I'm on to maximum violence, straight animal instinct."

Whyte will be fighting for the second time since he was provisionally and incorrectly suspended by the WBC over an alleged failed drugs test, overcoming Mariusz Wach in December.

His performance against the stubborn 6ft, 7in heavyweight giant was somewhat below par - understandable given the circumstances.

Though Povetkin was stopped in the seventh round by Joshua, he showed his class before defeating Brit Hughie Fury and earning a hard-fought draw against American Michael Hunter.

On the fight, he said: "I am pleased to fight Whyte, it has long been discussed but didn't happen for whatever reason.

“I am not about big announcements, I am about winning in the ring, and on May 2 people will see a spectacular fight."

Not a massive fan of Whyte, but credit where credit is due, he constantly fights good guys. Povetkin might be getting on, but he is a tough fight for anyone,and if he comes in shape, he’d every chance in this one.

Povetkins is old and fragile now. If Hunter can hurt him, I think WhyIsuck can hurt him also. I still think Povetkin's skills are so much better even at 41 vs Whyte, and I pick him to stop Whyte within 3 rounds.

It's hard to dislike Dillian and all that he does. Loves a fight, mad as fuck. He's got a couple of asterisks against his name but like I said in the other thread, you almost have to plead ignorance to it and move on, so many of them 'at it'. It's not right, but.....

Dillian has earned his shot, been knocking on the door for a while now. Decent record. I don't see him as a threat to any of the top three to be honest. He'd give them an argument for sure but win? Not seeing it, just not good enough.

He should be getting past Povetkin. As beanz said Povetkin will be dangerous for a few rounds and Dillian will respect that. He should start to grind him down around half way for a final third stoppage.

Both are steroid cheats, one also uses illegal gloves and the other is 10 years past his best. Don’t care. Call me crazy but the most important part of sport to me is being sporting. These dirtbags are not that.

Whyte needs to be in much better shape, and for the challenge of Povetkin he probably will be. This seems like a tough fight for both guys.

Whyte hasn't looked good of late. Parker had him out at the end of their fight, he had to go to war with Chisora for 11 rounds. The whole Rivas debacle and was down in that fight as well, was over-weight and unimpressive against Wach. This could be quite an evenly matched fight.

'If Ruiz can knock him out, I can' - Whyte still eyeing Joshua fight

Dillian Whyte has no doubt he could knock out Anthony Joshua if he were granted a huge domestic rematch with the heavyweight champion.

Ahead of his Manchester bout with Alexander Povetkin, presently scheduled for May 2, Whyte wants to maintain his momentum and earn a shot at fellow Briton Joshua.

IBF, WBA and WBO champion Joshua is the only person to have defeated Whyte (27-1), having knocked him out in 2015.

But Whyte believes the outcome will be different in a second meeting, citing his superior skillset to Andy Ruiz Jr.

Ruiz stunningly stopped Joshua in New York last June, only to lose the December rematch in Saudi Arabia.

"If Ruiz can knock him out, I can 100 per cent knock him out, because I'm a harder puncher than Andy Ruiz, pound-for-pound," Whyte said to Sky Sports.

"I've got better feet than him as well, and better boxing technique than Andy Ruiz. He's got fast hands, but his feet are slow.

"I've shown also in fights that I can come back from being down on the scorecards and I carry knockout power in the later stages of the fight as well, which is a big thing for a heavyweight.

British heavyweight boxer Dillian Whyte has accused old rival Anthony Joshua of “pretending” to want a rematch last year, but says he still wants to fight the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion.

Joshua avenged the sole defeat of his professional career in December by beating Andy Ruiz Jr to regain his heavyweight title belts, while Whyte defeated Mariusz Wach via unanimous decision earlier on the night.

In 2015, Joshua knocked out Whyte in London.

“I’ve been saying I want the rematch since the fight,” Whyte, who defeated Joshua in the amateurs before his professional loss in 2015, told Sky Sports.

“I know they were going to fight Miller in June in America, which I said months before the fight.

“They came to me and tried to kid me. You guys gave Miller 20 weeks, why are you trying to give me seven weeks? Because they wasn’t serious about the fight.

“Just using me as a scapegoat, pretending they wanted to make the fight. If he wants to fight, I’m here, he knows where I’m at. They know where my value is, I know the game inside out. If they want the fight, we can make the fight happen.”

Whyte also spoke about the challenges of training during the coronavirus lockdown ahead of his scheduled fight against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin on 2 May – a fight that is likely to be postponed amid the pandemic.

“It is very hard and very challenging, because obviously you have to take it in good spirit,” said Whyte. “I’m a big guy. Training and running and sparring takes a lot of me.

Dillian Whyte has dismissed the possibility of facing Joseph Parker or Dominic Breazeale and labelled the latter a “shameful, pathetic excuse for a heavyweight boxer”.

The WBC interim champion and mandatory challenge to Tyson Fury is scheduled to face Russian former world champion Alexander Povetkin on 4 July in Manchester.

However, Parker and Breazeale have both recently called out Whyte in hope of clinching their own chance of facing the winner of Fury and Deontay Wilder’s trilogy fight.

Dean Whyte, the manager of British heavyweight Dillian Whyte, has rubbished recent claims by Anthony Joshua that a rematch between the pair would result in a “one-sided” victory for the reigning WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO champion.

The two heavyweights first fought in December 2015 at the O2 Arena in southeast London with both men putting their undefeated records on the line. Joshua came out on top in a memorably topsy-turvy contest, which ended in a seventh round knockout.

Joshua would go on to win the IBF title in his next fight, a second round stoppage of Charles Martin, and eventually stopped Wladimir Klitschko to pick up the WBA and IBO titles. A measured points victory over Joseph Parker saw him add the WBO title to his collection, before two fights with Andy Ruiz Jr., which saw him lose and then regain his unified titles.

The bout - initially scheduled for May 2 in Manchester - was first pushed back to July 4, and has now been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis.

Dillian Whyte posts email showing Eddie Hearn’s $4million offer to Andy Ruiz Jr as pair exchange on social media

Dillian Whyte has posted Eddie Hearn’s email offer to Andy Ruiz Jr on social media in response to a tweet from the Mexican heavyweight.

The pair were in negotiations for a fight earlier this year, but a deal could not be made and the Brit ultimately agreed his bout with Alexander Povetkin instead.

Whyte initially claimed they’d offered Ruiz Jr $5million, Ruiz Jr hit back and insisted this was not the case.

He said: “Yo, Dillian Whyte, stop clout chasing. You never offered $5m. Lies.”

The ‘Body Snatcher’ responded by posting screenshots of his text messages from Eddie Hearn, who’d forwarded him the email of the offer.

This showed that the offer was in fact $4m, however Hearn suggested they would now make a new offer increased to $5m.

Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin and Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano are set to be the first major fights in the UK to be held behind closed doors, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The heavyweight clash was originally scheduled to headline a card at the Manchester Arena on May 2 with Taylor defending her undisputed lightweight crown against Serrano on the same night.

The card was shifted to July 4 with the coronavirus pandemic halting the sporting calendar and while Hearn has suggested another push back, he is confident the show can go on without a live audience.

“A lot of people think it is difficult for bigger fights to happen behind closed doors," Hearn told The Boxing Show on Sky Sports.

Dillian Whyte insists no amount of money could persuade the former Brixton bad boy to "step aside" and allow Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to contest the richest fight in British boxing history.

It will have been one thousand days waiting as the No1 challenger for the World Boxing Council crown when Whyte faces the Russian Alexander Povetkin on August 22, behind closed doors in the grounds of promoter Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing headquarters in the Essex countryside. Whyte's case was strengthened on Sunday when WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that Fury's world-title fight with Whyte "could happen" this year if the American Deontay Wilder decides not to go into the trilogy fight with Fury for the WBC belt on December 19, with reports that he is recuperating from bicep surgery.

Sulaiman told Sky Sports: "It could happen if they reach an agreement. The third fight [Fury-Wilder] and then the mandatory must take place. The WBC's position and ruling is as I stated."

Even Hearn has suggested in the last week that Whyte's title fight should take place before Joshua-Fury, which will not be staged until mid-2021 at the earliest.

Whyte believes he has the right tools to defeat Fury - claiming that he had knocked him down twice in sparring several years ago - and has the know-how to unhinge Joshua. "With a full training camp I believe I’ll stop Joshua. Like was shown in the Andy Ruiz fight, if you hit him and you’re relentless, he gets stopped.”

Whyte was a contestant on Masterchef last year and revealed he even learnt something about himself on the hit television show: patience. The fighting spirit who came to the UK from Jamaica as a young teen having grown up in abject poverty, and whose only career blemish on his 28-fight career record is that defeat to Joshua five years ago, explained: “Patience can convert into all walks of life. As I become older I become more patient and concentrate more. It definitely does help."

For now, though, the only hurdle in Whyte's route to glory is a former Olympic gold medallist and two-time world title challenger, who himself has only tasted defeat against Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

"Look, everyone I’ve faced is dangerous," explained Whyte. "Povetkin is probably the most seasoned guy I’ve fought, with the most decorated pedigree out of all of them. He’s a very tough, strong man, he’s got very good punch power. We’re both front foot fighters and he’s still got a lot of ambition left.

"He knows if he beats me he gets a major pay day and a shot at another world title. I think this will probably be the best Povetkin we’ve seen. This is a major fight, no tune-up fight. And with victory, I'll be pressing for that world title.”

He should have taken the offer to fight AJ when it was on the table. Ok it’s his prerogative to make whatever business decision he likes, but in terms of winning a world title, he should have taken the shot.

I don’t think he would have won it, but he could have come again. The rate he’s going he’ll have one crack at in the name of making a point, standing his ground. Whatever you want to call it.

Dillian Whyte confirms new trainer for Alexander Povetkin fight as Xavier Miller takes the role after Mark Tibbs split

Dillian Whyte has confirmed Xavier Miller will be his new trainer for the Alexander Povetkin fight on August 22.

The ‘Body Snatcher’ announced earlier last month that he’s parted ways with long-time coach Mark Tibbs, though there was initially no confirmation of his replacement.

Miller has previously worked closely with Derek Chisora’s camp under Don Charles, including for the rematch against Whyte in 2018.

For the past year, he’s been a part of Dillian’s team and was in the corner for his late-notice win over Mariusz Wach on the Andy Ruiz Jr vs Anthony Joshua II undercard last December.

Whyte told The Fight Is Right: “He’s a hard worker. He’s studied the game.

“He’s the kind of guy that, we record my sparring, he sends it to me and talks over the video.

The titles need to be broken up again. Forget Joshua and him holding all of them. He ain't a world beater or on top of the heap, Andy Ruiz showed us that.

AJ beat Ruiz in the rematch just in case you forgot.

Fury beat Wlad and went missing for 3 years, Wilder was getting wobbled by contenders until Fury battered him and AJ was knocked out by the one hit wonder. The champions are already broken up never mind the titles.

I think Povetkin has slipped enough for Whyte to have the advantage. I'm far from confident tho.

Looking forward to this one tomorrow, I've struggled to get back into the boxing following the lay off, I've had shit going on which has caused the boxing to take a back seat, when I have watched the Friday night fights they have been alright but I've always had a bit of a drink and haven't been able to get into it properly and often watched it with my music on.

I've got the bug back now though, been watching all the interviews and build up for tomorrows fight, yeah it isn't the greatest fight ever but it has the potential to be a real fucking scrap, I'll be ordering myself some grub in and watching the whole card.

Both guys look in really good shape, especially Whyte after his last outing. Anyone know what the testing was like for this fight? I expect this fight to be full of fireworks. I'm sticking with my pick of Whyte although I could see it going either way. It might be a case of who lands 1st.
